RED respond to Apple in compressed RAW patent battle

Comment on the forum

In Apple’s attempt to overturn RED’s claims over visually lossless compressed raw video, the US Patent Office has published documents submitted by RED. These explain their side of the story with particular regard to REDCODE.

If RED can continue to prove that the approach to their codec was novel, RED will win and Apple will have to compensate RED or make a deal in order to sell ProRes RAW in our devices and cameras, such as the Nikon Z6.

Supposed “Nikon 8K” camera footage was actually shot on RED Monstro VV!

Comment on the EOSHD Forum

Rumours out of Apple WWDC 19 talk about both Canon and Nikon 8K cameras being used to shoot ProRes RAW 8K footage for Mac Pro demos.

Footage from a documentary about Nikon ambassador Ami Vitale photographing Kenya was supposably shot in ProRes RAW 8K and the speculation was she shot with an as-yet unreleased Nikon Z9 with 8K output to an external recorder. Actually the documentary was shot on RED Monstro in 8K by Kiwi cinematographer Mark Toia of ZOOM Film and Television.

Meanwhile a Canon 8K camera resembling a C300 II is seen shooting props against a green screen for augmented reality demos on the new Mac Pro. This prototype has actually been shown by Canon before, most recently in 2018 at Inter BEE. The prototype has an 8K sensor and processor, but recording is external via SDI.

Indeed, Canon’s Super 35mm 8K prototype first dates back to 2015 and has been steadily developing since.

sony 4k mystery camera

SonyAlphaRumors reports are saying the 4K DSLR will have an interchangeable lens mount for E-mount, A-mount and PL-mount. And yesterday US cinema gear rental / sales shop AbelCine teased the shot above, which may or may not be related – only confirming it’s from Sony.

So what exactly do Sony have coming?

SLR Magic anamorphic flare

SLR Magic are working on a 1.33x anamorphic adapter. Hong Kong based shooter Edwin Lee has tried it out. The lens is ‘compact’ and attaches to the front of your prime. SLR Magic say it works best currently with their 35mm F1.4 on Micro Four Thirds and the Canon EF 50mm F1.4 on full frame.

SLR Magic are stepping into the world of anamorphic lenses. Developed afresh, this will be a 100% new custom designed anamorphic lens for filmmakers but priced accessibly for DSLR filmmakers as well as pros.
