Metabones Speed Booster adapter – full review

http://vimeo.com/57901943

Buy the E-mount Metabones Speed Booster – $599 for Canon EOS lens adapter, $399 for others

The Metabones Speed Booster adapter brings the full frame look to Sony mirrorless APS-C and Super 35mm E-mount. (Indeed it will bring the Super 35mm look to Micro Four Thirds but not until March).

It also gives you an extra stop of light. F2.8 becomes F2.0 and F2.0 becomes F1.4. F1.2 becomes a lightning fast F0.90.

It would appear the full frame sensor is now rather pointless. Is there a catch, a trade off in image quality?

More professional Panasonic GH3 with 80Mbit codec and preview of coming attractions

GH2 in ReWo cage

Photokina is less than a month away now and it is going to be a busy time. I will be there to get my hands on the new cameras, and I don’t think I can remember a month like this with such exciting products being released.

Sony’s full frame camcorder the VG-900 will have a mirrorless mount, all in a video camera form factor for £2.5k and of course we have the Blackmagic Cinema Camera which soots amazing 12bit raw for the same price. These were mythical cameras only 6 months ago. Raw video for $3000? Full frame video camera with E-mount?

Then we come to the GH3.

Sony full frame video cameras coming with universal lens mount

Sony full frame video camera

If this rumour at SAR is true it could turn the industry on its head.

Sony is about to wage war on the Super 35mm format, and wage a war on pros being locked into one line of lenses.

Their higher end video cameras are going full frame with a mirrorless mount.

Someone 1.00 releases Sony Alpha A55 hack tool – donate now for further test camera bodies and NEX hack

Sony A55 hack released

Please note: Download and install at own risk

Donate now!

It’s real. Sony A55 owners rejoice, for Someone 1.00’s first hack is now available and can be downloaded from the EOSHD forum. The patcher app is able to overcome the A55 firmware encryption and is the basis for adding bitrate patches and new menu options later on. The NEX 5 patcher I also believe is coming later.

Now Someone 1.00 is looking for A55 testers (view relevant thread here) to test new features and find their way as a team with the firmware, plus donations for NEX 3, NEX 5N and A77 bodies for testing and opening up for analysis. The firmware will need to be dumped and decrypted, for that he needs the actual camera hardware in his hands and more than one body. So the more people who can donate, the better!

A guy named Someone 1.00 is able to hack the NEX series of Sony mirrorless cameras for higher bitrates in video mode and more.

The video after the break shows the hack in action, and proof that it can be done.

Discuss the hack here and support Someone 1.00 in his efforts.

Mac AVCHD gamma issues – the fix

FS100 with SLRmagic Hyperprime

As I recently found with my FS100 Macs really seem to hurt your AVCHD footage from Sony cameras and the Panasonic GH2… But especially the Sony FS100.

It is no wonder these cameras often get a bad reputation for limited dynamic range, crushed shadows and blown highlights – when you are only seeing the middle part of the full 8bit range of luma.

This Rec.709 portion of a 601 space (16-235 instead of the full 0-255 the FS100 shoots in) is incorrectly remapped to 0-255 by Quicktime. Therefore apps that use Quicktime at their core like Premiere, trip up. This makes a huge difference to the image. When fixed, you recover over 10% of your dynamic range, highlight and shadow detail, along with a much smoother roll off to whites and blacks.
