Canon C300 Mark II costs $15,999, now available to pre-order + EOSHD Opinion

The Canon C300 Mark II specs are now out and you can see my opinion of the new camera below. As well as the C300 Mark II, Canon also announced the XC10 today, a 4K bridge camera with 12MP 1″ sensor.

One is a winner and one isn’t!

Tempted? Should you get a $6499 Canon C300 or wait until after NAB?

Canon C300

Many people aren’t ready for 4K yet. These people just got the bargain of the century with a massive Canon price reduction on the old Canon C300.

You can read my most recent views on the C300 here.

But should you give into temptation and buy one? Let’s have a look at the options.

Samsung NX1 vs Canon C300 (image quality)

The Canon C300 (currently reduced to $11,500) was the $15,000 stalwart of the professional videographer, only recently did it have a compelling rival – the Sony FS7.

The Samsung NX1 is essentially a cutting edge 4K Super 35mm sensor in a mirrorless camera, recently given a video oriented firmware update which improves dynamic range and the available image profiles.

I was curious to see how the images from these cameras compared and I put my Canon 1D C into the mix as well.

This is the Sony FS7

The Sony FS7 is Sony’s next e-mount Super 35mm camera, shooting 4K XAVC. Thanks to the E-mount you can use Canon EF lenses on it and the Metabones Speed Booster for when a full frame look is required. It has a 180fps slow mo mode, with an ergonomic design much improved and closer to the Canon C300, with top handle, top mounted LCD and built in ND filter. It really looks like Sony are going after the C300 market with this and it’s arguably going to be a much more capable tool. I’m impressed!! The camera will be announced today (Friday) …

C300 and 1D C drop $2000

This is an interesting move by Canon. The 1D C I expected really to drop further in price because of intense competition from Panasonic and Sony at much lower prices. The C300 however has been selling very well but now apparently Canon want to shift stock faster. Is this to make way for a replacement? Based on specs alone it is certainly due one. Based on the real world and how this camera has been accepted by videographers and filmmakers, people seem pretty happy with what they have!

Arri AMIRA priced to compete with Canon C500 – plus, the secret of Arri’s success

Arri AMIRA

Full information on the AMIRA can be seen at CVP

Looking at the Oscar nominations recently at EOSHD, with not a Red camera in sight, it’s clear Arri are a run-away success in the filmmaking industry. Now Arri are gunning for the Canon C300 and C500 with a camera which could seriously erode the market for Cinema EOS cameras at the high end of the broadcast and single-operator videographer market. The Amira’s pricing starts at 25,980 euros which puts it in the Sony F55 and Canon C500 range.

What’s the secret to Arri’s success?

RED cameras absent from all Oscar cinematography and best picture nominees

oscars-2014-cinematography 1545569_1435538563346548_805595201_n

SetLife Magazine (a recommended follow on Facebook) has compiled technical specification slates showing us who shot on what when it comes to the big 2014 Oscar nominees.

Interestingly Arri cameras still sweep the board. There are also nods to the Cinema EOS cameras and even the GoPro, but the really surprising thing is not a single one of the films were shot on RED.
