I haven’t really run into this problem with my GH5S but I have a habit of hitting record and then directing the actor or talking about how I want the scene to play out before I put my eye up to the view finder or look at the screen. And like fuzz said, I always look at the timecode to confirm I’m recording. A side benefit of this is inline voice memos in my footage lol.

I hope this puts a fire under the butts of Panasonic to really come out swinging (maybe for the last time) with a MFT camera that does the GH line proud. It has to compete with BM cameras as far as codec and Image quality. They could do it by adding practical features that every person would use: internal NDs, improved IBIS, better AF, better screen and EVF, 6K options, and perhaps ProRes. If it needs a bigger body that’s fine. Most of the savings with MFT is in lenses (especially as you scale to telephoto). They already have small MFT GX10 coming...

Don’t forget about that insanely hard to develop and expensive 24p license that only canon has trouble with. Im pulling for them!

This is exciting but I’m checking my expectations at the door. This is Canon. There is almost always a deal breaker. I just can’t bring myself to believe The R5 will have useable specs above and beyond their LATEST 16K Cinema EOS camera. It sure looks to me that the IBIS mechanism is in the lens and they’re doing some kind of lens OIS and EIS to achieve the amazing 8 stops. Depending on how they implement it we could be seeing a large crop for the EIS. This theory makes even more sense when you see it’s like only 5 stops and then jumps to 8 stops with the R5. So this could mean: 1. New, expensive OIS lenses or... 2. Requires EIS to achieve the 8 stops so requires a massive crop and only works in 1080p modes. Rolling shutter has always been a problem. If it has rolling shutter like the EOS R’s 4K, then it’s essential useless (not that 8K is important for me). Internal RAW, if like the 1DX3, with it’s insanely impractical 2.5Gbps bitrate makes that practically useless for me as well. I am exciting for possible super clean 4K recording (hopefully up to 60p and without the fun house rolling shutter) that has the canon image mojo and DPAF with eye tracking.

Probably natural +2 for GH5S... Problem is it really throws off the yellows.
-
I am shocked it doesn’t have at least 10-bit options with its “new” processing engine and a new EVF!? There is almost nothing compelling here... I’m not sure it’s even a good upgrade for the fast majority of EM1.2 owners!

This is a development announcement, correct? Would be so nice to have canon really back in the “dslm” video market.

Yes, and my whole post is that I’m seeing them for what they are...and I’m looking for more meaningful, thoughtful content. It’s hard to find!

Well I’ve never been motivated to change or do something in my life because someone waived a 1DX in front of my face or did some stupid sketch about their Tesla Remote driving to bringing them their new C500Mk2. I’m not jealous at all. If you have the money and want toys that’s fine. All power to you. But in the end it’s really just hollow and empty. This is coming from someone that wants to start a YouTube channel for fun and maybe a bit of profit. But I’m not going to waste my time peddling shit to any potential viewers. I won’t make the mistake of having the income from YouTube dictate what type of content I produce and when. That’s the trap. Eventually, you have to do this shit your YouTube punishes you for it. That’s why all these channels just start to converge into one big monolithic corporate sponsored blob. Im really, really sick of the stealth sponsored brand peddling and extreme GAS that these people present to you. If you don’t agree with me then do an experiment. Take these (Real) titles for example..emphasis theirs. Is the BMPCC 6K still worth it? All you NEED is FPV. Why I Invested In a NEW $16,000 Camera How to use a wide angle lens effectively. Hiking the Mardi Himal trek in Nepal. Why I switched from Canon to Sony... Whats in my camera bag 2020... HOW TO CREATE CINEMATIC B ROOL New C500 Vs EOS R... And that was two full scrolls down YouTube for me. Almost all of those titles are geared focused. Don’t watch for 1 month. In that month, instead, go out and use your gear to create something. Doesn’t have to be some spectacular epic...just create. I will guarantee you will become more inspired and more creative doing it then watching this crap. I bet you will even come to appreciate the kit you are using. I bet you will be happier and more joyful. Having said all of that. I like YouTube. I’ve learned SO MUCH in a very short amount of time on about any topic. This is the power of the internet, but it’s also the internet’s extreme weakness for promoting and sharing toxic thoughts and behaviors to an audience of billions—mostly kids. Part of the reason, I think, that Peter McKinnon does so well is that he, as a magician / magician enthusiast, understands the power of illusion and presentation. Because not only is he getting paid to present you with some product but he is also selling you a certain image. And it seems this is everything in the successful YouTube personality space. @Andrew Reid, I think your cheap camera challenge would translate well to YouTube channel to promote not only people actually using their gear and enjoying the process but to bring people here as well. If that is a goal of course. Maybe you don’t want that.

Does the majority of MFT glass cover 23.5 x 15.6 mm?
-
Well with a 54mm diameter for R mount there is plenty of room. L mount is ~52mm. So badically comes down to IBIS mechanism.
-
Clearly the new processor in the 1DX is pretty capable. That leaves thermal head room in an R body. They super sample in the 1DX. My guess is they will stick with SD cards, which means no RAW at ridiculous bitrates. Which is fine with me. 10-bit Canon Log is more than capable at 480Mbps+ All-I. Current V90 cards can handle up to 640Mbps leaving a 80Mbps headroom for I/O overhead.
-
Uh, most large, older companies are filled with this kind of crap...
-
10-bit internal C-Log, IBIS, and 4K no crop with decent rolling shutter And DPAF and I’m in for less than $4K. Dont care about 8K. 5.5K RAW is a “nice to have” but mostly likely impractical with media storage costs but could change.

Please Canon, you know you want to. I’ll be your fanboy forever. I’ll even use your camera straps! -
Another excellent release from media division. His stuff is on the level with most TV show productions in all honesty. Same length too.

My problem is I never can stay with on setup. So for me flexibility is key. So for me: Nothing should be bolted down. Everything should be easily moved and setup in less than 10 minutes. Mount points everywhere. If you can mounting NATO rails in key places with magic arms on NATO clamps to hold cameras, mics, booms, lights, whatever... supwr clean space with no clutter to juggle or move around. Have a closet that is filled with your gear organized the way you want it. That being said it’s nice to have something that works and stick with it...but I prefer to ease the friction between idea to execution as much as possible. How many times have you been like, “oh this would be cool...and then the hassle of trying to setup for it ends in a “fuck it”. Probably just me 😉. I really like calebs idea. And I really enjoy those flex lights that are foldable and DIY easy stuff like using shower curtains or wax paper.

I think the SL2 is a sleeper for video. I have been looking at more footage and its like a Panasonic S1R done right. I love a lot of what Panasonic does but sometimes their image is just...to clean, and hence suffers from that digital look SooC. The SL2 doesn't do that aggressive noise reduction and with L-log and Leica color mojo the footage looks incredible. Biggest downside is moire and the just awful AF. Blackmagic is incredibly organic looking as well. But their cameras are just..butt ugly and build quality has been hit and miss and of course no AF. The price is right, so we can't have it all, I guess. This leaves Canon. IF Canon released a capable 4K60p camera with DPAF and their wonderful (and easy) SooC goodness it would be a huge hit. I rip on Canon a lot but I would buy that camera and sell my Panny gear because of the sheer convenience and reliability of SooC goodness and best in class AF that only requires a slight massage in post production.

I want 6K. I would shoot almost anything except a static talking head in 6K for the many benefits it gives you including flexibility to crop, image stabilization, downsampling and noise reduction into a 4K deliverable. Of course things are moving to 8K but I think the uptake on 8K content is going to be extremely slow. Much, much slower than 4K as the benefits are increasingly diminishing for the storage and processing costs. 6K is a happy medium for a long time to come for anybody not shooting nature films for National Geographic.

It’s about that time for Tony to release a MFT is dead video. He does one every 3 months or so. He will definitely use these specs to prove he’s right this time...
-
I’m really interested to see where the actual specs land. If it offers 4K/60p no crop and pixel binned then that’s good enough for me. 4K120p with a heavy crop and no AF is fine with me. Oversampled 4K24/30p would be amazing. Dual pixel in every mode up to 60p would be killer as well as roughly 13.5 stops DR to compete with S1H.

I should note the circle in the bottom right is the best value for the money...its probably a Sony F3 or something....or some other older, used, cinema camera that has seen some shit.

Guys, guys. This is the videography and photography world. You have to teach him to be really toxic first so he has a fighting chance in the first place. First of all, you can't use more than one camera brand. IF you do, you're lost. You have to choose one brand and then go all in...buy brand merch and invest at least 10K into the system. You then have to shun and look down on anybody that uses a different camera, why? Because they are dumb and not smart like you. Got it? Good. Second, EVERY camera that is NOT YOUR CAMERA has terrible color science. This is fact. Third, it's always, without exception, all about the gear. Dropping 3K on a new camera WILL make you a BETTER photographer/videographer. Don't believe anybody that tells you otherwise because they probably shoot on a point-and-shoot (this is very, very bad). Fourth, never talk to a Pentax owner. This rule has no exceptions. Do not break it. Fifth, and final, when you switch your camera brand you have to start from step 1 all over again. Good Luck and fast shutters!
