  1. New Godox model that sounds promising. Supposed to be similar to the Apturure mdoels but cheaper by several hundred dollars.
  2. The problem with using a shower curtain or ripstop nylon as a shoot through material is that a lot of the light is lost, since it bounces off the diffusion material and back toward the lens. The benefit of a soft box is that some of that light that bounces off the diffusion material is then "reclaimed" by the white (or silver) lining of the softbox. With most softboxes, I think you would get around one-stop more light than if you used a simple diffusion fabric hanging from a mic stand in front of the light panel. (It has been a while since I tested this out with my old photoflex soft box (RIP), and some of my nylon diffusing material, so I don't want to swear by how much more powerful a softbox actually is.) Paul C. Buff claims their reflective soft silver Parabolic Light Modifiers (PLMs) provide four times the light output of softboxes. But that was with strobes / flashguns, which are going to block a lot less light than light panels when light is bounced off them. However, their soft silver PLM's are a bit specular and shadow contrast is higher than a typical softbox / octabox. One can use the white cover with the soft silver plm to make it less specular and lower contrast, but that cuts down the efficiency of the light. https://www.paulcbuff.com/Light-Modifiers/PLM-Umbrellas/86-Soft-Silver-PLM-Umbrella.html I haven't used the soft silver PLM yet, but am thinking of getting one... either that or go with a godox or other light similar to aputure 120D and go with a softbox.
  3. Since someone posted the OK GO videos, I thought here are a couple of others that could be used for inspiration as to being one-room films. https://youtu.be/MW0y7i2AyNU https://youtu.be/-6z_77BxOmM
  4. IBIS on the sony is pretty decent for shooting stills. It is pretty mediocre for shooting video, IMHO, and the IBIS on my a6500 doesn't compare well at all to the IBIS on my Panasonic S1. I think a compounding factor might be the really bad rolling shutter on sony bodies also makes it appear worse. I wonder if shooting at a faster shutter speed than the 1/180th rule would make the IBIS appear better (at the expense of more staccato movement, of course). Something to try out for the next sunny day.
  5. i certainly do agree to a certain extent with your original premise about needing an expensive mic for most of us to hear the difference between camera preamps and better preamps. Although I guess that putting a mediocre mic through a good preamp would be at least SOMEWHAT better than putting a mediocre mic through a bad camera preamp. Also, I could certainly be wrong, but don't some people use older microphones for the "character" the way filmmakers might use older lenses for their character? Probably there are some audio engineers who will bite the bullet and clean up the audio in post as long as they can use a mic that gets a certain tone they want that is otherwise hard to replicate. I don't know about capturing sound on 20-year-old sound devices, but I know that a lot of times people use the old Shure SM57 mics when they want a dynamic mic, and those things were first released in the '60s. I guess they are used more so for things like singing and podium lectures or podcasts though???
  6. I have the prompt smart pro app (for android) and it does have that voice-follow feature. Been using it a lot lately. Sometimes it is glitchy. Also, they went from a one-time purchase of $20 to a yearly subscription model of $30 per year. It's a pretty good app overall and if you have a long script, then it might not be so bad. I think it is best for people who are adept at reading scripts because if the talent messes up, it is probably harder to back up then other teleptrompt apps. So if the talent is new to reading a script and will mess up a lot, then an app that is easier to "rewind" will be better. Although I think they might have a bluetooth-based scroller than can be used on a separate phone so that you can reqind / skip forward if you mess up. Prompt Smart pro is pretty good in that if they talent goes off script for a while and then goes back on script, the teleprompter will keep up with them. Meaning, it will pause in place when the talent goes off script, and start scrolling again when the talent gets back on script. Again, this is probably most usable for someone who is adept at reading scripts but also likes to make comments "on the fly" while recording.
  7. No final LOG to REC 709 CST node at the end??? I generally try to keep it simple and most LOG grades only have two nodes. First node is for LOG wheels and contrast/pivot/saturation, and the second node is usually CST for LOG to REC 709 (or I use the VLOG to 709 LUTS from panasonic). So the other colorists on the liftgammagain.com site are saying no need to do a conversion from LOG to 709 at the end?
  8. The one thing though is that in his Rebuilding the Linny Lut video, at the end he explains why he DOESN'T use the traditional Resolve curves tools (like hue vs hue, or hue vs luminosity). Unfortunately I can't find that video anymore (I think it was on Vimeo... looks like he took it down). Anyway, he used one of those "LUT Stress Test" images from True Color to show how using curves to recreate the Linny Lut caused all sorts of artifacts. Wish that video was still posted somewhere...
  9. I know that in the Android world there are teleprompter apps you can put on your tablet that you can control via bluetooth using a phone. Certainly there has to be such a thing for apple users.
  10. Nice!!! My wife and son were in Malaga last summer. They liked it a lot. They said they really like the "Tour Bus" that takes you around town.
  11. Change it from "Oats" to "Grits" and you have yourself a masterpiece In all seriousness, good work!!! Thanks for posting it.
  12. That reminds me of a certain "news" network that was constantly warning Americans that Obama was coming to take their guns away, and that the Ebola threat was all Obama's fault. And was happy to support a president who flat out lied about Obama not being a US citizen. Fear mongering on a billion-dollar budget, indeed. Unfortunately, it appears that transmission from person to person is quite likely when someone who has Coronavirus is still asymptomatic. Because in the US we didn't rush to provide testing kits and have a comprehensive testing strategy, the spread of the disease is far worse than it had to be. I've seen on CNN's website interviews with people who have recovered from Coronavirus. They all have said the same thing: Don't get coronavirus. It sucks. Which is why we need medicare for all in the USA; so people will STOP being focused excessively on oneself and one's own family, to the detriment of others. The mortality rates of SARS and MERS were higher than Covid-19. But Coronavirus is much more contagious (at least in today's world). At the END of the SARS epidemic, only 8,000 people WORLDWIDE had tested positive for SARS. As of today, over 44,000 people have tested positive for Covid-19... in the USA alone. Worldwide over 400,000 people have coronavirus. So that is an infection rate of over 50 times what the infection rate was for SARS. (Most likely, the number of people who are infected is significantly higher and is severely under-reported, as countries like Iran, China, and North Korea are suspected of covering up the number of actual cases and deaths from Covid-19). And we should avoid another 12,469 deaths in the US by pretty much any means necessary. Swine Flu was horrible. Yeah, what we learned is that even after experiencing SARS, MERS, and Swine Flu, politicians will ignore the health of the people if they think that strong action to curb a pandemic would affect their ability to get re-elected. Absolutely NO ONE is obsessively trying to kill every single germ in their vicinity. What they are trying to do is get the governments (federal and local) to implement better testing and dedicate more resources to fighting this and other diseases. For the people who DIED of SARS, MERS, Swine Flu, and will die from Covid-19, the world will certainly come to an end for them.
  13. @Anaconda_ Awesome work! Thanks for posting.
  14. Are you using the mic on camera or booming it???
  15. I think you bring up a really good point. Here in the US, there are certain counties (like where I live) and I think entire states (New York???) where Shelter In Place orders are in effect. I think the duration varies from county to county (for those not familiar with what a US "county" is, I guess it is about the equivalence of a province in some European countries???) Anyway, as you noted, I think the coronovirus will be far from wiped out at the end of four weeks. But I think it will (hopefully) give us time to get hospitals and the entire medical system better prepared, and hopefully prevent local hospitals from getting overwhelmed. Hopefully, we will have more testing kits (and quicker test results), and hospital staff will be able to have more masks / gloves / other supplies that they need. Around here, they talk about flattening the curve. That doesn't mean no new cases; it just means getting the rate of new infections to a "manageable" level. Personally, I am pretty pessimistic on any sort of vaccine / cure any time soon. And if there is a vaccine, it might be good to remember that vaccines for the flu range in efficacy only from 40 to 60% (depending on the strain of the flu). And even if they do develop a pretty effective vaccine, here in the US, there are people who refuse to be vaccinated. And finally, it should probably be noted that worldwide, 1.7 Million people are newly infected with HIV, a virus that is MUCH HARDER to catch than Coronavirus. UNAIDS says that in 2018 770 thousand people died of AIDS related diseases. Chances are we will be living with coronavirus and mutations of it for quite some time.
  16. In the color page of resolve, you can apply a Color Space Transform (commonly called a CST) to a node on a clip-by-clip basis (Instead of to the entire project) So you can apply an HLG to Rec 709 CST to all of the clips you shot on the GH5 in HLG. You can also use an CST to transform any of your Sony clips in to Rec 709.
  17. Unfortunately, people were hoarding them.
  18. Of course, Sony's version of the Corona virus drug was supposed to come out last year. I am sure it will be released any day now...
  19. Thanks for the explanation. I always like how they describe a sport as "non-contact." Seems to me there is a lot of contact in "non-contact" sports.
  20. Great work. The opening shot of the video you posted is amazing. Just the determination on the face of the athletes in the first scene draws you in. Any idea why male players are required to wear a full helmet and cage while female players only wear goggles? Are women somehow immune to concussions / head trauma???
  21. So you can't just throw a LUT on and be done? Or convert to ACES? Sorry I am asking so many questions. I haven't had enough time to shoot real-world video projects so I just want to make sure I am prepared for my next video job.
  22. Yeah... 10-bit vlog is why I bought the camera in the first place. So to me it is important.
  23. But what do you do in high contrast situations??? VLOG definitely has a boost in dynamic range.
