Jinni Tech claims RED Compressed RAW patent filing is invalid

Thanks @Kisaha that does answer my question. 1080p120 is downscaled from the 2.8k crop, so will definitely have wider FOV than the P4K. Also interesting to note: according to the charts this camera will perform slightly better in PAL areas, as all 50p frame rates are down sampled from the full sensor, but 60p is down sampled from 5.7k. Granted, there's not much in it at all, but interesting that 50p will have more in the frame than anything 60p.

you can make your own for a couple bucks.

When shooting 4k or 1080p on the P6k, does it crop the sensor, or downscale from the whole sensor? I assume since they're ProRes only they downscale, but then what about 1080p120? Does that window the sensor? If it does, what's the FOV compared to the P4k shooting 1080p120?

ah I didn't realise ProRes RAW infringed on the patent. I assumed it was like Braw, just outside of the perimeters to be unaffected. Thanks for pointing it out. -
Still has the red highlights thing. It’s not a bother for me, but I know some people got worked up by it before.

Not my video, but here's the specs: • Resolution: 6144x2560 (not full sensor size) • Frame Rate: 60P • Codec: Braw 12:1 • Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 ART • Tiffen Black Promist 1/8

It hasn't been since they announced the 6k. If you click on the 6k it gives you a rundown comparing the two. It's still very much a current product.
-
ah yeah, thanks for the correction

If an extra piece of glass between the sensor and the lens - on that fits between the sensor and the lens connectors gives you a (close to) full frame look, why isn't that a standard? If BMD put that in the 6k by default, and marketed it as FF6k50p with 4K 35mm crop there would be a queue around the block for the camera.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does Apple have to gain by suing RED? Doesn't it work in their favour if other manufacturers have to avoid REDs patents (valid or invalid) forcing them to turn to ProResRAW instead? -
Tom Antos does this test in his review. I seem to remember the P4k looking very slightly better, but there’s not much in it.

Great that's cleared up now. @drm could you record say 1 minute of the same scene on both the P6k and P4k both on the same Braw setting so we can get a good idea of file size differences? Alternatively, what does the time indicator say for the same card in both cameras?

What's up with people flipping the camera for their thumbnails. It looks stupid. Flip yourself, not the camera haha!
-
The E2c also has Zraw. At $800, is it the cheapest raw camera ever made? and since at the moment Zraw is limited to 4k30p, the E2c is just as capable in this area as it's bigger siblings. If the codec gets more support, it'd definitely be one to keep an eye on.

Could you forget about the grill altogether, hang a mirror at 45 degreed from the ceiling and then put your camera up close the the ceiling - shooting into the mirror and down into the room? Then you can use whatever lens you want to. Flip/flop the footage in post and nobody will ever know

I would agree, but not necessarily the cameras. Their switchers, encoders, surfaces, control boards and all those kids of things are where the money is. The cameras are cheap to get people on the lower end using their gear and knowing the brand. DaVinci comes with them for free because once you start using it, you'll want to progress and step up to the next tier. That means you'll buy the hardware to help with that, which is also made by BMD. So while the software is cheap/free and the cameras are low priced, I would agree with @nathlas - They want everyone to be using Resolve because then they have a cornered market for the accompanying hardware.

50fps looks like silk, film does not. That's why they're saying it looks more videoy.

I read this question as physical depth of the camera, from front of the lens to the screen. If that wasn't the question, I'd still like to know
-
Already hacked it?

It's strange they put version numbers on at all. Since so far all updates are free, they could just not even mention it on the packet thing. Also, it's nice to see it's not just double the price for 6k and EF mount. There's also a strap!

@mercer Here's everything Grant mentioned regarding the P4K update v6.6 expected 'in a month or two'. 1. Many more HUD languages 2. One screen level, using built in gyrochip. 3. Gimbal support to allow start stop and focus on popular gimbals. (No mention of what those are) 4. 4k 2.4:1 - s16 - 1.33x anamorphic desqueeze & 16x9 preview - 4:3 anamorphic 2x desqueeze preview 5. Hopefully a few other little surprises

Interesting sensor comparison. The 6k is slightly smaller that s36, but the 4k is large (wider but shorter) than mft.
