Ive never heard a good DP complain that the Red Epic, Red Helium, Arri Alexa, Sony F55 are not full frame. I've put the Metabones XL speedbooster on my pocket4K  and super happy with the look.
Andrew, it seems that the whole BMD Manchester incident still has a bitter taste in your mouth. You are looking for any excuse to hate this camera in the same way that most heavy forum users look for excuses to hate on any camera and use a cameras lack of features as excuses as to why they are on forums rather than out shooting nice images. Sorry, I know that view is going to make me unpopular on a forum but I think it's kinda on the mark.
Is the Pocket4K for everyone? No. The camera isn't a white unicorn....it isn't the perfect camera for everyone. No camera is.
If you just want to shoot bare bones, in the hand video with no light, get an A7III. If you want to VLOG, get a camera with a flippy screen (although interestingly, I know a few vloggers that use Red Helium as a vlogging camera!). It really depends on what your priorities are.
The Pocket4k is a solid little camera. Sure I wish the battery lasted longer than an hour and I wish the screen was easier to see in bright sun but having used Sony A7 series, Panasonic GH series and the Fuji X-T2 all as B cams, would I chose to shoot with one of those over the Pocket4K? No chance! I still need to add external monitors to those small hybrid cameras anyway and their battery life is barely any better ( apart from GH series) ........but the Pocket4k image creams them!

Get the iPhone Xs MAX, it has everything a client could ask for today, IBIS, AF, 4K 60p. Seems to be the best thing out there, and it's just a little more expensive than say the pocket 4K (BUT YOU GET TWO *FREE* LENSES WITH IPHONE OMG OMG)

    HALLELUJAH!!
Thank you, and I mean it. Finally there is someone here who has not just arrived in the past month or so and skim-read the blog for less than 5 minutes!!!
Did you know Johnnie / Nino at Cinema5D go around saying I can't shoot!!? Unbelievable. I find the pro video community SO FULL of arseholes sometimes, it's unreal. No wonder choose to be outside it rather than be chummy with such egotists and their naked self-interest.
I would like this thread to get back on the topic of the overrated Blackmagic Pocket Camera so this will be the last post for a while from me, unless attacked again.
See you in the other threads about other cameras.

They say: Never meet your heroes, because they're sure to disappoint you.... I think it's more like: Never meet your heroes, because they're really human just like you and everyone else on the forum.  I hope this forum is big enough for both Andrew and John or John and Andrew, whichever, because I will miss hearing from both of them on a regular basis.  Maybe a vitural hand share over PM could happen and we could get back to obsessing over a camera that most of us have yet to hold in our hands.

I inserted myself into the discussion last night when I probably shouldn’t have, but I do stand by my opinion that Andrew should have been invited to the Manchester event.
I, for one, never felt that John Brawley was to blame for this and feel that most people on this site have been very thankful for his contributions, not just about info on the upcoming camera but his openness about the inner workings of a Hollywood set and his methods of shooting.
But the disdain displayed to Andrew in this thread is mind boggling. I don’t always agree with him, but the man has wholeheartedly opened his craft and home to a countless amount of strangers for free. There is not one other site in the video community that is completely ad free and he rarely asks for a thank you. I can only imagine the cost it is to upkeep this site. I’d be a liar if I didn’t admit that I find him infuriating at times, but I would never question his devotion to his craft and his readers.
With that being said, I feel JB’s reply to the events was unnecessarily rude. Perhaps there was a breakdown in communication as Andrew has already stated but for every person that felt Andrew could have handled the snub differently, they should equally admit that JB could have handled his response differently as well.
BM was born on the backs of hobbyists and enthusiasts. We paid for the R&D of the Ursa Pro with every Pocket or Micro we bought. As much as we appreciate their inexpensive cinema cameras, they are only available because we decide to purchase them... it’s like a television show, it only exists at the behest of its viewers.
But in the end, they are both artists and artists are passionate, honest and sensitive people... they must be to put themselves and their work out into the world for scrutiny.

    Thanks Karim
And Dan, yes webrunner is right. It's a cultish following around the Pocket camera.
For example, I understand that Facebook targets each post to a subset of my followers on the EOSHD Facebook Page, depending on the subject. It's automatic, I don't have any control over it. But a lot of pitchforks came out for me today on Facebook which confused me because EOSHD supporters, followers and friends don't usually behave like that.... I know why this time was different, because Facebook had targeted a Blackmagic article at the Blackmagic hardcore fanatics and they didn't like what I had to say.
As for typical BM roll out, yes it is. Trade shows have less meaning to everybody outside the bubble. Most customers don't want to be teased for half a year or even more before they can get the damn camera in their hands. Blackmagic should stop syncing their announcements to NAB and instead put the announcement out a week before they start shipping.
The irony is, here I am feeling upset about being passed over for a camera in my hands... with a hardcore of Blackmagic users saying "what a crybaby EOSHD is" when at the last few camera launches, those very same people were moaning about not having a camera in their hands, because it's late or whatever.
At the end of the day, I reflect on the course this thread just took and I regret it. I stand by my hurt over the camera and snub, but I regret what's happened. Take what you read from everyone on forums with a pinch of salt including even yourself whilst saying it! And including me. I am not myself on the internet sometimes, nobody is. The internet is a weird simulation which is causing issues in real society across the globe all the time. It's not real life, it's a machine-assisted facsimile of it. John Brawley and I would not have behaved the same in real life. The internet is an argument generator and a distorted mirror and I might indeed have to shortly go to the pub and have a stiff drink.

Mr. Reid, I don't know you and I won't pretend to understand what you are going through, so please do not take this statement the wrong way. However, when you say you are 'feeling really quite down', do you think that your current mental wellbeing is served by continuing to have this discussion? By arguing (no matter how justified) with people on these forums, your blog and Facebook page (all three of which you seem to hold very dear and personal, something which I understand).
In my opinion you absolutely did the right thing by locking up this thread temporarily, and my advice to you would be to do it again. Why revel in this energy-consuming discussion? I get that you're dissapointed and feel sleighted by Blackmagic's decision no to hand you the camera for early review, something only exacerbated by the fact that the event was in your own home-time. That must have honestly felt like shit. Nonetheless, scratching the wound left by this event (by returning to the discussion over and over again on these forums) might feel satisfying in the short-term, but it is absolutely not conducive to it healing. I suspect you are not gaining any longterm insight or satisfaction by having this discussion in this manner, and even worse, you might be worsening you're already crummy mood because you are now infecting this website with a discussion that 1) will make it harder to take back anything you say in anger because it is now done in a very public way, and 2) taints your very personal project with a negativity that you probably don't want in your life. Finally, in your anger you might end up taking actions or saying things that will end up doing damage to this project (eoshd.com) which you obviously hold so dear to you.
My advice (but hey, who am I) to you would be to give yourself a break - delete the blogpost you made, lock this thread and go for a walk/watch a movie/have a nice dinner with friends. Seriously do anything else for a while instead of having this situation drag you down. When you come back, delete this entire tangent and have this thread be about the Pocket 4K again. If you find Blackmagic's answer to your emails not satisfactory in the future, just don't cover them anymore if it makes you feel better. I just don't believe it is conducive to your wellbeing by dragging the argument into the public (and very ill-informed) sphere.
Hope that all makes sense. Thank you for your passion and thanks for hosting this site.

@John Brawley, I've been very grateful for your posts and have watched and enjoyed quite a bit of your work before even realizing that you were the DP (Lake Mungo is genuinely one of my favorite movies of the last decade). With that said, that post really bummed me out and felt pretty condescending.
If you disagree with Andrew that's fine, discuss it with him. As I said, I personally wouldn't feel the way he does. But he's entitled to feel disappointed that BMD didn't invite him to check out the camera, especially when they held the event just minutes away. Heck, the fact that he's so interested in the camera should be seen by BMD as a good thing! Are they obligated to invite him, or anyone? No. But would it be a nice gesture and courtesy to give someone that gave BMD their time and energy when BMD was just starting out with their camera lines an opportunity to check it out? Especially when their ambassadors / employee use the forum?
Even if you do feel like he is overreacting, surely you can put yourself in his shoes?

Sorry to hear that, makes you realise what's really important!
Very true and it's so relentless, there's a new temptation around the corner every few weeks. Easy to get hooked. These companies are spending millions on getting us hooked. Just like us, they're never satisfied either.
It's like in home audio... Eventually you will end up with an end-game, which is perhaps 5 or 10% better than what you had mid-way through the spending spree.
I am going to review the E-M10 III next. $500 camera. I'm going to use that instead of the Pocket 4K, forget raw. I'm going to go out, have fun with strange Russian lenses, and appreciate how short life is and how the time is better spent with family than with disposable consumer goods.

Despite you continuing to delete my comments I'll continue...... Because although you may not be able to see it, in the mood you are in, I am trying to help you.
I work as a freelancer in the broadcast industry as well as film industry.
When it comes to Broadcast... while I'm not the best out there at what I do, I know plenty of freelancers that get work over me despite producers preferring my work. Do you know why they get work over me? It's because they do send those emails (the one you wrote in the childish voice) and it's because they do actively hound the bookings people in the office.
I've never been one to do that and it sounds like you haven't either.
Sometimes it's not about who's the best but who's been the most persistent at forming relationships with others in the industry. I've never been good at marketing myself or ringing up the people doing the hiring asking for work in the same way that it sounds like you don't do that with camera manufacturers. It means that even though producers tell me I might do a better job of something than the next person, I don't always get the call for work because the communication between producers and those booking crew is not always there. In the same way that while you may have relationships with technical people at BM, the PR people might not get the info.
Do what you do bacause you enjoy it. If you hate this forum, then yes, stop it or pass it on to someone else. If you still enjoy this forum, if you still enjoy doing reviews, then don't let this one instance ruin everything else.

Think you're overreacting to all of this. Dunno mate, you're just seeing things that aren't there.
I am afraid too that you're quite right. That's the way the game is played right now I'm afraid. But do you want to play ball and get in or do you want to shout from the sidelines? That's really up to you.
Except... there was no such message. Companies are big... positions change... networks fade and re-establish. You want to be on the radar? You better make sure you're flying through their airspace making waves big enough to get picked up. It's a sea of content creators, filmmakers, blogs and forums out there. They can't keep tabs and stats on all and invite like the top 10 that come out of that. It's like a birthday party. I invite the people I've gotten to know well. Why would they go about it any differently? They're not mindreaders. You can't expect them to know what you want unless you make that clear to them. And how should they have known that you are back in the UK. I thought you were in Berlin as well, myself. Maybe if you shot them a message now making a case for yourself they'd be supercool to still give you one early. But instead you make up your mind about how they think about you and EOSHD and throw this unnecessary tantrum. Boycotting their products. Threatening to close the forum. Like... are you having a midlife crisis mate? Nobody is an enemy here. Why can't we just all get along, talk this over and sort this out like adults?
This has nothing to do with not appreciating you or what you've done with the site and for the community. The GH2 Hack Vault and stuff back in the day got me hooked. The GH4 and anamorphic guides were great. Your blog posts... your forum comments. I might not agree with everything, but I've always respected what you did. This is a safe place for people of all kind of backgrounds and skill levels, it's great to see the comradery, playful banter and knowledge displayed. And I am in fact grateful for that and for you keeping that alive. But that's got zero to do with not being invited to a hands-on event. C'mon.

    What a shame.
Who are these "deep state" BMD insiders that are here pushing an agenda ? Myself and Hook.  Who else ?  What do you guys think, there's a plot and conspiracy ?  You guys don't wat these contributions I guess ?
I'm here because I've been a member here for years and I'm on many camera forums and this is just another one I like to read and contribute to where I can.
I want to know where all the clowns that were saying on this thread that the world was going to end because BMD didn't have any footage out yet and that definitely meant something was very wrong and the shipping date would be missed.
All I've seen so far is that a planned marketing campaign by BMD that has gone off the way they intended.
They commissioned some actual filmmakers (not bloggers or camera reviewers) that make certain types of film (natural history, action sports, nature) to make some films and then they released them and the camera originals.
Then they gave some cameras, complete with some boxes as if they were new to some secondary users, and whilst having them also under NDA, got them to shoot some test footage and allowed some of them to release that footage.  Again.  Not reviewers.  Not bloggers.
About a thousand reviewers and camera jockeys have done a bunch of made up comparisons and VLOGS based on existing footage. (hey I love seeing my footage being butchered by grading nerds)
    Think about it.
No blogger or reviewer ANYWHERE has gotten a functioning camera to shoot with as far as I can tell.  Because that's not what BMD want to do with their marketing of this camera.  This isjust marketing 101.
They need people using the cameras in the many difference specific sectors of the market will use the camera.  Camera reviews aren't part of that plan. (though it hasn't stopped people doing it based on existing footage)
Until it's shipping, it's their choice to give it to whomever they want.
I'm tired of this entitled bullshit.
I recently left a few facebook groups I was on for this camera, and I'm doing the same here.  Frankly it's juvenile and I don't need the agro I sure hate explaining what should be obvious.
    There's no slight.
BMD have a marketing department and they have a plan and it doesn't involve forums, bloggers or camera reviewers.  That's not a snub, that's just them marketing the product in the way that they see fit.

You've admitted you've not watched any footage and have no production experience.  You're speaking to an audience here in this thread that has a either a great deal of experience, or lot more experience than you yourself and who have actually bothered to read a little more before posting to an audience of like minded individuals.
Consider researching a little more thoroughly at least before throwing some handgrenades of questions like the ones you dropped in your previous post.
I don't even know where to begin if I have to explain why it can take much longer to grade a shot than to shoot it.
Learning is great, and knowledge can be had here.  This is a very helpful community but you have to put in a little effort rather than it being spoon fed to you.

I still can't believe people are trying to compare a camera which shot HD with one that shoots 4K. It's like when we moved from SD to HD (here i'm refering to the TV world back then) - all the tests, all the moaning & then the slow realisation that we would have to change the way we did things.
What BM have given us so far are 3 different tests, using 3 different types of lenses & thus gave us 3 different shooting styles. Yes, i thought John's looked the best - lens choice & experience?  But the Balloon film was meant to show off what a Documentary style piece could achieve - there was never a point where I thought it should look cinematic. The Nature piece really showed of the DR in extreme circumstances, but I could really do without ever seeing another piece made with that Sigma zoom, absolutely hate that thing, yuck - if someone gave me one for free, I'd sell it & buy something else.
I laughed when Frank (over at BMUser) slapped on the Tokina ATX Pro to his BM4.6K last year & it shone - then everyone went scrambling for one. This is a lens we've known about here for ages (thanks to Andy Lee) & how could you go wrong with such a lens - it's an Angenieux recipe lens that screams that cinema feel/image. If you slap on an over sharp modern photography lens, as is, you're going to get that video look in 4K - it's not rocket science. Maybe, just maybe, you might need to really start thinking about what you pair with this camera & stop thinking that it's only the camera.
The recommendation has always been to invest in glass, not camera bodies - that's really where the mojo starts & ends. I wonder what that Nikon "Bourne" lens would look like on the P4K, probably amazing!?

I really don't think (or hope) it's done in camera. BM never did that before. They always delivered a RAW like image in ProRes with all the nice looking grain and smoothness, very much like ARRI and Red do.

Don't really care about chroma noise.

    I think we're just nostalgic.
When the Ursa Mini 4.6K first started shipping there were many many threads that were EXACTLY the same as some of the complaints on here....  Users complaining that the UM4.6K didn't have the same mojo / look / feel as the 4K sensor which at that point was in the Production camera, the Ursa and the Ursa mini 4K.
    This is a new sensor.
It has the same chef's in the kitchen, working with new ingredients.
Spend some time with the images, look at the RAWS when they're available and learn to get the most from it.  THEN come back and post about what you like or don't like.  But grading from a downloaded 264 and then writing it off as being inferior is a bit premature and simplistic.
    JB
