There is no good way to judge colour online - lets review all the possibilities:

    • log images are shown
this is the purest experience of the camera, but you can't judge anything with this

    • log images + manufacturers LUT is shown
this is the best way to judge images, but its random chance how good this will look and doesn't really show the potential of the footage

    • graded images are shown, but they look crap
this tells you nothing as you can't tell if the camera is bad, the LUT is bad, the colourist is bad, or all of them

    • graded images are shown, and they look good
this tells you what is possible but not what is possible for you.  great images could be because the camera is great and colourist is ok, camera is good but colourist is very good, camera is mediocre but colourist is world class

BTW, if camera forums and camera YT had the same level of knowledge about cameras as they do about colour grading then every video would be trying to work out the exposure triangle and failing.  Even rudimentary colour grading and colour science knowledge online is rare outside professional colourist circles - I know more about these things that most and I am at the very very very shallow end of the pool so if I know more than you do then you're basically no-where...

I don't have iPhone 15 and can't share any examples or direct comparison with Android RAW.  Few months ago tested iPhone 14 Pro then two months ago  Xiaomi 13 Ultra + MotionCam (Android RAW). I like raw video from Android more as picture quality is obviously better. I expect iPhone 15 with Apple Log to be better than iPhone 14 Pro but not by much. I don't see dramatic difference so far between iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro with Apple log. Not in the examples published on youtube. Maybe log footage was not well graded.

Yes can share some of the clips made by Xiaomi 13 Ultra + MotionCam and iPhone 14 Pro on the thread dedicated to RAW video on smartphones.

Here is a frame grab from one of the clips made using Android RAW video. Background blur is natural from the lens, not computational

Cousins disagree more. Plenty of clips shared here that show apple Log looks nearly as good as Sony slog3 in many situations.

Biggest problem with previous generations of iPhone was the extra processing of the video. It was impossible to switch off
        - tone mapping they use to increase DR
        - sharpening
        - noise reduction at higher ISOs

Even when using third parties applications

Now with Apple log, tone mapping and sharpening can be switched off apparently according to some initial tests

Another big problem were flares at night, Apple claims that nano coating of the lenses solves this problem. We'll see
Adding the ability to record to external SSD and even SD card is another useful feature.

I still would prefer probably Android RAW video but IPhone 15 + Blackmagic application + Apple Log shapes to be a great  pocket camera that is always with you.

Any examples of android raw that’s superior to Apple log you can share ?

Why Apple should invest on a shrinking and niece market is really not in their DNA and mission....

that seems fair. And maybe the answer to my thought is Apple will continue to add software and hardware that gets us to a point where most of us can use log and luts on an iPhone for many projects

Instead of a third camera maybe just get iPhone 15 instead 🤔

I wonder what would happen if Apple chose to get into the camera market? Their budget, reputation, and software make me think they’d be industry leading almost immediately. I wonder if adding log and ProRes may hint at them flirting with the idea.

*shrug* only looked marginally better than my own footage from my 12 Mini.  Until they stop pummelling the footage basically to death internally it won't produce anything other than a brittle digital looking image.

I've just spent about 90 minutes trying every blur technique I can imagine on some sample footage I have from my 12 Mini and then jumped over to some similar shots from the GX85 and it was night-and-day different because it wasn't over sharpened before the compression.  The GX85 is 8-bit vs the iPhones 10-bit, but the GX85 was still outright superior, despite both cameras being used outside during the day, so have absolutely tonnes of light, so both sensors would have been base ISO.

The RAW footage from the android phones looked great - even after being put through the YT compression which is far more severe than the compression that is applied by any smartphone manufacturer.  I don't know why Apple are so intent on ruining the video signal they're pulling off the sensor.

Let’s take a pause as videos are starting to come out with ProRes and Log footage. There’s a chance for some great images and so I’ll suspend similar conclusions for at least the weekend/week.

So overall, I don't know what to make of the video.

Plus, when you eliminate all the fast cutting by watching it at 0.25x speed, it looks pretty sub-standard.

Agreed I was unsure but goes to show good lighting and thoughtful shots can look pretty damn good

Richard Wong tested better lowlight capabilities than R7 and XH2. No big treat? Like anything else on this camera? I think it is, just like the ne Ibis, AF, Dual Gain and heck what not, possibly even a creamier image for video. Richard Wong did a 2hour+ review!

I like the body of the G9II. The S5, S5II bodies are the best looking FF cameras to my eye. Now, you have been, are and will keep being entitled to your opinions and underlining them from different angles. I understand what you mean but I prefer Richard Wongs input compared to the repeated statements regarding body too big, etc. I think it's perfect size. I see it as a cinema and cinema verité camera par exellence. Whereas the Sony A6xxx series is not a pretty sight to look at and the A7C has just the same kinda body. Scandalous, isn't it!

I am astonished about the G9 II, this new video beast. The unconvinced ones among us, they can repeat their complaints again just like been done before. It will leave me shaking my head due to that lack of appreciation. This thread surely needs some more overheated love for Sony brick cams. Some fresh Sahara winds from freshly fried  brick cam sensors. Some ever searching future Sony camera buyers with the same psalms and unwillingnes of purchase need to chim in more! Big time! Feels good to adapt to the overly cheek in tongue tone of this thread. We all sound like the mighty 30 to 60 year old dudes ruling this world, universe, cultures and greatest of manners, with an appetite and naughtiest of greatest plaisir of judgement. Seen that, done that, been there and all that tasty confidence. Gee, I need a break from some of the lesser intriguing "insights". I'll give you a longer one. I read the word wankers in one thread. Gimme a break. Missing @mercer and many more of the friends of the past. I am sure you do too. The tone in this forum has been lacking for quiete a while now. I'll give myself a break in the sight of overconfidential antics of the latest weeks on Eoshd. I think it's a great last word of this post. I appreciate this new camera and our lovely and dear Eoshd.

As long as you don't need the absolute best video quality for it, that should do for most situations.

Thanks, could you clarify or unpack this for me?
