    great questions!

let me ask you this hypothetical, if you got an email that said "we'd like to fly you out to Japan all expenses paid and let you play with a new unreleased camera with a bunch of your friends for a week" would you accept? i even told LUMIX i am not in the niche like i used to be when i did Kinotika and Indy Mogul and they still wanted me there!

As for making money off views, I actually made a video that got more views than most the other people who were at the S5 II release last year. I made $100. I didn't make the video to even make money. I made it for fun. Because I thought it was an interesting story to tell about Panasonic finally adding phase detect to their cameras.

For sure! But don’t you think people will be skeptical of the positive reviews? So many popular YT personalities give mostly positive reviews for every camera they’re given by a manufacturer. Free camera, free trips, people are going to be skeptical

I went to Japan and have the loaner S9 from Panasonic. I told them I am not in the camera review space like I used to be, and they still were kind enough to invite me. I plan on making a few videos with it, but haven't posted anything since the embargo because I am so unsure what to say. It seems everyone has already made a "First Look" video and many others have tried to apologize for accepting the free trip and camera. I don't feel bad for accepting the trip as I'm sure anyone else here would do also. I think all the conversation around this is generally healthy for our industry and why I personally took a step back from it all over the last two years after quitting Indy Mogul.

Feel free to ask me anything you want. I promise to be honest.

Why do YT reviewers say that they’re the pipeline between camera companies and us users? Why can’t they just borrow a unit from a local shop to make a review and garner views that way?

it seems to me that they’re just finding a niche to make a living by making ads for companies. Nothing wrong with that but the veneer that you guys do this for anything but compensation is the issue.

“I wasn’t paid for this review” but was flown out and had a trip paid for? Didn’t Gerald say you guys use this as a chance to make videos for sponsors to get paid?

nothing wrong with making a living but in a field where comments drive views and revenue it would seem being honest and not doing gymnastics to skirt the reality would help?

I think this is a key point - colour grading is a daunting and time-consuming thing that most won't want to do (or learn to do).

I disagree that this isn't for content creators, I think that's exactly who it's for, but the point stands.

I got into video around 2016 and at the time the people here were all about LUTs and profiles, CineD in Panasonic cameras, the Leeming LUT etc.  At that time I didn't see anyone talking about colour management, and although Resolve was the same price then as it is now, it was a very different tool back then.  It had only recently had the Edit page added, and round-tripping from PP/FCPX to Resolve and back isn't for the faint-of-heart.

There are still lots of people who don't want to colour grade, for a variety of reasons, but now it's not a choice between a few profiles or a few LUTs, or spending the time and effort to learn colour grading.

100^ on point. To think the only way to legit be into camera and video is to learn color grading is quite odd. I’m going to die someday. Let me have optimal color or near optimal with minimal work - for the platform of socials and YouTube. That’s it. This camera is a massive step in that direction. Panasonic is really stepping up whereas canon is just like huh

  4. A few things,

    1. Gerald’s video confirms that these folks can’t be trusted as independent sources.  Yes they’re not paid but a free trip to hang out with friends is an incentive to want to be in their good graces.
    2. he noted they used these as trips to make content for a sponsor - aka a paid commercial. Again, not trustworthy

    3. this camera doesn’t need a mechanical shutter because it’s not for pro level use. It’s for people on vacation or with their family.
    4. this camera isn’t for YouTubers or wedding videographers. It’s for the person taking short bursts of video with friends, family, and when traveling.
    5. if Panasonic can get it right with lenses then this will be a line that makes sense. If this currently had a 2.8 pancake  this easily is more desirable than some of its competitors.
    6. not every camera has to be for every market, this def. Targets schmucks like me who don’t want to color grade 🤭

There was a lot of talk about the Panasonic marketing concerning the S9:

Hey guys! These trips aren’t cool at all but we do get free vacations, products to review, and then we can use this as a way to make ads for other companies products too!

    yea totally trustworthy Gerald 😂

    Here's Canon's 28mm (notice the price):189386529_Screenshot2024-05-24at06_43_51.thumb.png.64ce896be11bfc27664d6d86c60e9f61.png

    An one from NIkon:

Panasonic gave us a 26mm FIXED f/8 MANUAL FOCUS lens for $200. What the hell, Panasonic? And where's the pancake 35-50mm? We need that too for this camera!

With the F8 lens, this is actually debatable. It shouldn't be, but it is!

After a couple days of processing the news and the leaks fiasco, I, along with so many others, am most disappointed in the that drilled-out hockey puck of a lens cap. I give them an "A" for inspiration and a "F" for usability and value.

The other thing is the lack of any sort of a mechanical shutter on a slow, old, 24MP sensor. Why didn't they include a stripped down version of a mechanical shutter, like what they had on the GM1, GM5, G100, GX800, GF(all of them), etc. We had up to 1/500 in mechanical, making the cameras so much more usable in many more situations. Also, the option of a flash is possible.

In essence, the S9 is a l-mount video centric camera without a headphone jack and all kinds of overheating limitations. It tries, and loses, to compete with the sharing abilities of a phone. With that F8 lens, it barely competes on the image quality. The IBIS, as good as it is, is only comparable to a phone. Its saving grace is the fact you can change lenses and make much more of it, but even then, you still don't have a mechanical shutter for general photography. Again, it's an "A" for looks, but a "D" for a photo or video camera.

I say all of this with a grain of salt because I base everything on the specs and what I've heard. With time, I might completely change my mind. Also, it looks super cool and that would be a trump factor. M43 (or other real cameras) are much better suited for general photography.

True but it destroys Fuji for that market now. It’s not even close and I’m excited to see what folks do with it in that space

But for photographers, then the S9 is going to be more appealing than a DJI Osmo Pocket 3

What’s a better setup if you were traveling? Ricoh and Pocket or just the s9 for both

the S9 still has a niche for the social media addicted content creators.

I think for some who don’t want to spend time in post, these software features are truly moving the needle forward in a very positive way.

I think for the target audience, the main competition is smartphones. Everyone this camera is aimed at is probably using their phone now to take photos and shoot videos; this camera allows them to post to social media just as quickly but with higher quality. But as cell phones get better, IQ gets better, raw capture improves, lens options improve, etc., bridge cameras like the S9 seem doomed.

And pocket 3 ! I love the portability of my Ricoh gr3x but for video I was liking the pocket 3 but man, the s9 images I’m starting to see are pretty amazing. I’m fixated on the garbage f8 released with it but I’m now curious are there 3rd party options for the s9 that have small footprint lenses that can be thrown alongside the s9 Ina. Fanny pack?

This DoP I just very recently shot a web series with (filmed on a Panasonic S5IIX primarily, sometimes with S5mk2 as a second camera as well) just uploaded a video with his initial impressions of the Panasonic S9:

I was just looking at their prices a second ago! Absolutely shockingly expensive.

Seems like a lot of the small mini sized cameras, not just the GM5 (but also the GM1, GX8, GX85, etc etc), from Panasonic are more overpriced than I thought they would be.

I've hit saturation after this one - well made video. Still boils down to:

    1. The software improvements with LUTs are really inspiring and hopeful moving forward

    2. The image is top notch and can't complain, absolutely beautiful

    3. The body size is overshadowed by the large lenses - might as well just use an S5II

    4. If they can figure out a good audio solution and a true pancake 2.8-4 lens i'd consider this as the ultimate EDC/travel combo (until then, i'll stick to my Ricoh and possible a pocket 3)

As always, Gordon has a decent review:

Sorry, but if you shrink the body to be “portable” and don’t have small lenses to compliment it - waste of time. F8? It’s laughable.

lack of audio monitoring features even for short clips? Get outta here.

For this style of creation a pair of a pocket 3 and Ricoh GR 3x makes a tone more sense and despite being two devices is more usable and portable.

software is the win here. Other brands need to jump on board with RD into onboarding LUT features for jpg and video. The x100 crowd would eat it up.

if Panasonic had pancake lenses that hit 2.8-4 and an updated audio solution they’d have a killer combo. The image for video is better than Fuji or Sony at this compact level with Lut features.  No need for “velvia” if you’ve got out options. Fully frame and no need for a gimbal? Yea I’d buy one in a heartbeat.

Initial reaction, Panasonic dropped a dud with this release.

Quite a few folks were interested in an L Mount rangefinderesque PannaLeica along the lines of Nikon’s Zf and Leica’s Q3, a true ‘vintage inspired’ but ultra capable hybrid.

    This is not it.

Without the grip, this thing for any extended use is going to get frustrating fast.

Not that you would want to use it for any extended time because for video you are capped to prevent it from having a meltdown and for photo, it’s pretty limited.

So that leaves the ‘Content Creators’ (but seriously who would pick this over say a Sony EV Z1?) and willful photographers or videographers who enjoy trying to wrestle with less than appropriate bits of kit when better options exist.

An ‘updated’ Sigma FP for 2024 this is not.

Disappointing, especially with no sign yet of a replacement S1 line…

    Evz1 got me 😂

DJI Mini 4 Pro because flies too! LOL : )

On the ground to have with me all around? Osmo Pocket 3 or the new Ace Pro has also impressed me. Its 8K 24p looks like a winner there.

    Sorry I meant this crop

    of cameras not ursa lol
