  1. Very detailed and cool to be honest. That said I have zero clue how this relates to anything I asked I’m beyond lost in the weeds here man.

im just curious about skintones SOOC and how they’re achieved easily. No clue what makeup has to do with anything for the situation I asked.

    I love Fuji's color.

Agreed between them and canon for me. How do you deal with AF issues on Fuji?

How fast can I get to the image I want,

    This is exactly my point.

Nowadays I don't think it holds anymore.

What SOOC or fastest post workflow brand do you like ?

You seem to care about matching cameras....

No, sorry for confusing - I’m making the statement that even if one tries to match a color profile - cameras will retain differences that affect how pleasing we find it and therefore I was curious, with that given, your view on the original questions.

    thanks for clarifying confusion

If you're cutting between two cameras that were used to shoot the same scene but from different angles then you'd be surprised at how different they can be without the viewer noticing.

    This is because:

    • The lighting will be different from the different camera angles
    • The contents of the frame will be different, either subtly or significantly
    • The viewer might (and hold onto your hat here....) be watching the film and not comparing skintones

Besides, I said to learn colour grading.  If you can't edit two cameras together with skin-tones that are similar enough not to bother viewers, then you haven't learned it enough yet.

What does that have to do with the original questions?

The answer is either putting in the time to learn colour grading, or putting in the time to earn money to buy multiples of the same camera so the image is identical.

If the goal is to match many cameras yes - I was commenting that even if you matched color to your best ability the images will still look different and some will prefer skin tones and the overall look differently.

Unless you're shooting broadcast or live-streaming, I don't see any point in shooting non-log out of any camera. Use a simple CST (or auto CM) in Resolve and you'll spend 5seconds getting the log to look good in 709.

Sure, even still there seems to be differences between cameras even when trying to match color

  7. Is it fair to say some cameras produce normative or more pleasing color to most but if using log, you can get similar color/image from most cameras equally?

    1. if you wanted a personal camera with fast turn around what brands are you usually happy with color wise?

    2. when deciding for more professional or bigger projects, how do you decide what system/log system to get?

seems canon and then Fuji reign when SOOC is discussed and it’s more nuanced for the latter.

  8. If you’re struggling to comprehend DR I’m hopeless! 😂

so it seems I’ll rely on some other metrics as I’ll be baking images in with LUT in camera and not pushing in post. That may open up options for me as to what body I can use. Portability and compact is a prime start for me.

  9. Insightful posts and ideas. I just think if you look at the videos you’ll see a pattern that’s much simpler - the sensor for fx30 and a6700 appears to be darker or have a less pleasing look compared to FF. But it could also be the glass etc. seems easier to achieve a desirable look on a7iv/fx3 sensor than fx30/a6700.

Without watching the videos and just looking at the screenshots, it looks like the ZV-E1 was exposed about 2/3 stop brighter than the FX30.  Assuming that it's 10-bit footage with a decent codec, you will drag a single slider slightly to the right in post and the images will look much more similar.

It is likely that the ZV-E1 has slightly more DR than the FX30 (full frame vs aps-c of a similar generation).  In the relatively low-contrast scene that's shown, if the exposure is within a stop or so of (what I think of as) correct, you would never know or care.

Interesting. Thanks for this view! Is it possible that at the same ISO, we’d see this color or DR difference? Meaning the creators are using ISO as the equalizer rather than exposure x/y axis?

Most camera comparisons are pretty worthless because you're almost never compare two cameras in the real-world, and even if you are:

    • They'll be from different angles, so will have different content
    • They'll be colour graded, and matching cameras that shoot LOG is pretty easy
    • Things like DR don't matter unless the scene has huge amounts of it, but this is rare these days
    • Videos get compressed to within an inch of their lives by the streaming services, so anything subtle will get crunched
    • You don't need to get that close in colour in order for people to not notice different camera angles not matching perfectly
    • Even if camera angles don't match, it only bothers people if your film is completely crap
    • A much more significant impact on your final film will be the features of the camera, as they make a different on set in terms of efficiency of shooting and your ability to spend any time savings on lighting, directing, etc etc

Trying to improve your film by concentrating on the minute differences in cameras is like trying to improve your paintings by concentrating on minute differences in your paint brushes.

Cool points but those screenshots and videos are comparing the images with same settings at the same time. There’s distinguishable differences and I find it interesting.

  12. Posted a thread recently about APS-C, but curious what are good f4, or thereabout, zooms.  I think 35/40 is a good small option for FF but a standard zoom for travel/sports that would be reasonably priced used?

  13. Good advice, i'll check MPB and KEH - that said i just worry that the units being sold may be more prone to overheating than a new unit.  Type that out sounds potentially ridiculous just a fear.
