  1. Just another thought for a hobbyist here - I can’t imagine why I’d be filming for 20-60m straight in 98 degree humidity continuously. And if I was using it for work/professionally I’d probably be using a cinema camera.

    id love to have a c70 but I can’t afford it and don’t need it.  So maybe an a6700 does make sense.

  2. The reality is that Sony, compared to other lines, offers a great image with leading DR and log performance along with the best open lens mount in the industry.  They’re pushing us to their fx like and I may be okay grabbing an fx30 for video work as it seems like a better buy than the alternatives when you consider quality, price, and lenses. I currently own an griiix and it’s pretty cool for most of my photo needs but have yet to try snapping my runners. Could always grab a used a6600 for some action shots of runners to pair with an fx30 for documentary stuff

    I'm starting to think it's intentional. I don't think they want to release a hybrid camera that is capable of doing both, at least not at this price point. There really was nothing stopping them from adding a fan, even if it added to the price. Releasing a camera that overheats is a choice.

    That’s fair. Could also just be profit motive in another direction: “we have all these parts let’s just throw these extra parts in a smaller body and call it a day”

    I mean it's pretty hot, haha, but not hot enough that it should cause a camera to overheat in under 20 minutes! When I am filming events it can get even warmer (mid 90s and up) in venues May through September and I work in Vermont!

    But companies will keep releasing cameras like this until people stop buying them and making excuses for why it's acceptable.

    Starting to agree this is absurd.  They are in a bind to keep up With spec races versus waiting til engineers develop better thermal dissipation for high powered tech.

    I was really ready to buy this setup. It’s got everything I need on paper.  Would the Fuji attachable fan work with this?

    otherwise I’d consider a used a6600 for photo portraits and sports and an fx30 for video documentary work.

    I have not seen a single piece of footage I like shot with the Helios yet.

    Maybe it’s just my taste, but it just looks like a swirly mess to me.

    Having said that, I’m shooting all weekend with a vintage lens for the first time so interested to see what that produces…

    Yes, I have tested it, just not extensively and it’s a much less ‘interesting’ shall we say rendering. Fairly low on contrast, quite neutral in its colour but as with most older lenses, boy does it not like being shot into the sun.

    Not sure if this is going to be an issue for me as a long term proposition and whether I might be better off swapping this approx 700g 1975 40-80 f3.5 for a modern cine zoom such as the DZO 35-80 or Laowa 28-70 with their modern coatings? But extra 1kg… I’m sure that extra 1kg is not all lens coating…

    CVP did a side by side and I prefer the results from the Laowa, but the DZO has a better focal range for me.

    But anyway, getting off topic. FX3, I think it’s a great bit of kit and would shoot one in a heartbeat.

    He mentions there’s various versions and he happened to make the mistake of getting the lowest quality. Did you get a chance to see the video? The grading and color I found highly appealing and nice to look at.

    Highly likely to be the YouTuber fault.

    I am feeling this too. Any good comparisons to judge canon clog3 and slog2 say fx30 and r7 or r8 and a7iv

    I have also swapped from reviewing DR figures to looking at latitude testing, and even did some latitude tests of my own cameras as they were not performed by CineD.

    Sure, you might have one or two more stops in outright DR, but if those extra stops are bright purple or leafy green then they don't count as much as ones where the colours are neutral and the only issue is noise.

    This is especially relevant when shooting in high DR environments I think, as one of two things can happen:

    • You're shooting with proper exposures and the right ratios, in which the extra stops of DR will only be included deep into the highlight and shadow shoulder/knee rolloffs, so are providing a relatively minor improvement to the image
    • You're not shooting with the right exposure and ratios and you need the extra DR in order to bring up relevant details from the shadows or pulling down the highlights to bring out relevant details from there - which in either case is heavily dependent on how good those areas look

    When you start evaluating cameras on that basis, the rankings get shuffled significantly with some "high DR" cameras taking a pretty awful fall from grace, whereas others with more modest DR numbers climb up that ranking because all those stops are neutral and very usable.

    Any specifcs? Says comparing a7iv, fx30, S5II, R8/7?

    Brandon has done much cooler stuff with cheaper cameras. Nicer colours too than this. 🙂

    Love his stuff. Enjoyed the colors here but did feel like it was more rushed than his usual artistic fingerprint. He didn’t have but a few hours with it so there’s that.

    Honestly rent both and see what you think. There is a lot more to using a camera than simply looking at a dynamic range chart. I like the out of the box Canon looks more than Sony regardless of dynamic range. Plus there is ergonomics and all that to consider.

    What about comparing slog3 to clog2

  10. 1 hour ago, ntblowz said:

    All camera is trash to Alexa by ur logic then, cause no one touches Alexa on DR if colour is comparable.

    Sure but I guess I was referring to canon vs Sony as stated in the post?

  11. 2 minutes ago, ntblowz said:

    Just based on DR? That is pretty laughable 😆

    But yes Canon mirrorless camera DR is not as good vs competitor, but cinema on the other hand is different story.

    Why laughable? If color is not much of a difference but DR/rolloff is a big difference between log profiles wouldn’t that make canons R line inferior in image to Sonys A line?

  12. 16 minutes ago, TomTheDP said:

    The ones that don’t have clog2 kind of suck dynamic range wise. All Sony cams (mostly) have slog3 which can contain all the dynamic range the sensor can put out.

    So the hybrid market of r7/r8 is inferior to a6700/a7iv?

  13. Been checking some videos of the r7/8 and other canons lately to see how they fair to Sony and I noticed a lot of blown out highlights.  Is that a flaw of the processor/sensor or users on YT?

    I am reminded of just how good that rear LCD is

    Fair point - I guess they’re assuming the target audience if this camera (a6700) won’t mind as much or notice.

    My 2 cents after seeing some reviews as a targeted consumer of this camera - hybrid-enthusiast-amateur. Yes, because if doing videos was my work, don't even would think about this one.

    It is a rollercoaster of features: some very "high" (good) and some very low (bad). Mostly comparing it to the Fuji XS-20, which looks like the closest competitor.

    High:
    - 4K60 and 4K120 available in this price point - and, importantly, the image in these modes are VERY good. (I'm looking to the 1080p 240 from you, Fuji).

    - Card slot on the side, not on the battery door.

    - No idiotic filters / effects on the mode dial;
    - Arguably the best AF on the market, and good to use use manual focus too with the Focus Map feature (never tested it, but looks amazing and almost no one talks about it).
    - Dedicated switch between stills and video - much better than turning a mode dial.- Small - in the videos I got the impression that the camera is bigger because it looks thicker, but is even smaller than the X-S20. Heck, even smaller than a Panasonic GX85.

    Low:
    - Horrible 1080p video, if you want it;
    - Bitrates looks bad, 100 mbps for 4k24 (but never used XAVC-HD to have an opinion);
    - Terrible LCD panel for 2023 standards;
    - No focus joystick - and yes, was just the case to put one on the place of the AF-ON button, and moved the button up.
    - Bad burst still numbers;
    - No open gate or DCI 4k;
    - Dunno if the C modes on dials could be used for video too;

    About overheating: for people like me (hybrid normal user), and most the "content creators", it is almost a non-issue. Slow-mo is not used a lot, and when used, is for small takes. In fact, for Youtubers, the bad 1080p is more of a concern - a lot of these people still uses 1080p. Overheat could pose a problem for hybrid wedding shooters, I guess. In this regard, the fan of the X-S20 is kinda of a good solution - but if I wanna use Fuji for any professional use, would get a X-H2 or X-H2s.

    I liked the camera. But, if the X-S20 have AF good enough, is a much better proposition - in fact, Fujifilm released a firmware update yesterday that enhances the AF performance (but, again, no general wide / area tracking). And you have open gate and even the option to get an external recorder and shoot RAW video, for $100 less than the Sony. And, for stills, you have Fuji colors.

    All goes down to AF performance. For "content creators", is the most important thing - and the reason that ZV-E10 sells like hotcakes.

    The Canon R7 looks slight ahead than both these ones, but...where are the lenses?

    The A6700 is terrific for the intended public - and for the boatloads of the A6xxx users, is a no brainer. This one will sell VERY well.

    Yup agree and like I’ve said - a pair of fx30/a6700 makes an all around great combo for all video and photo needs for most non-prosumers.
