The Z8 as an APS-C video camera.

You can shoot RAW in DX mode, which crops the sensor and gives you 5405x3040 clips, better than 5K and much better than 4K. You can shoot RAW at the highest quality (HIGH), with the bitrates 1/4th those for 8K - so you can shoot 48 minutes at HIGH RAW on a 1TB card, as opposed to 12 minutes for 8K!

You can of course us DX (APS-C) lenses in those mode. For this video I used the FF Nikon Z 24-70 f4 lens. An advantage of the crop is that mostly one is using the center of the lens, so corner drop-off is irrelevant - most lenses from Nikon are really good in the center.

    So, how does it look:

Think meerkats - habitat and inhabitants in their activities.

    5K (5120x2880) frame grabs:

Is there a chance you could share the original 5K raw files?

Anyone know if the highlight rolloff improves with pro res?  I really don't want to shoot raw for my little shoots - $7K AUD to make my life harder 🤦

Prores HQ looks way better, especially in nlog on the Z8 and the Z9. When you shoot in h265 there's a disgusting amount of internal noise reduction going on no matter what profile you're in and it's not possible to switch it off.

I can't say that I have noticed a problem with artificially smoothed skin textures in V-Log but I haven't looked very closely so that's not say that it's not there. Deezid often has good insights into detail, noise reduction and sharpening. @deezid there's a link to footage on the previous page if you're interested in taking a look.

If this phenomenon is confined to the normal profiles then that's fine with me as I never use them.

BTW, another issue doing the rounds on FB groups is that in HD 50/60 full frame there is no PDAF, only contrast based. Crop HD is fine, as are normal frame rates in HD. Just something to be aware of.

Yup, if it's confined to the normal profiles this is a complete non issue as far as I'm concerned.

  4. There's some fuzz in other forums about the S5ii using a new algorithm that seems to smooth skin texture a bit too much. As far as I've seen in the comments this seems to be happening in "normal" picture profiles. Have you noticed a difference in Vlog with regards to this, @hyalinejim? Thank you by the way for the footage and info, really impressed by the s35 quality too, where the rolling shutter seems to be very well controlled.

native lens options are kinda meh

I would get a Z9 mostly because of the incredible S-lens line-up. Beautiful lenses all of them - barely any focus breathing, weather sealed, fast accurate and silent autofocus and beautiful rendering. The Z 35mm f1.8 and Canon RF 35mm f1.8 are miles apart. And the Z 24-70 f2.8 is quite possibly the best 24-70 ever made.

  6. Sad to see Canon play us like this. Sold my R5 a long time ago and lost a chunk of money.

This dude has measured the temperature of the outside of the camera when recording with the new firmware. It seems to stabilize to around 102 degrees Fahrenheit around 60 minutes and then stay there in 4KHQ.

I wonder if the sensor gets noisier with these temperatures sustained. Have you noticed anything Andrew?

  7. Excited to see that @Andrew Reid picked up an OM-1. Is there still a vast difference with regards to detail between the 4K UHD and the C4K modes? All the samples I've seen seem a bit mushy. Great colors and great IBIS, but concerned about resolution and digital sharpness.

The video resolution test chart results don't look very impressive for a 2022, $2000 camera - I was hoping the OM-1 would be at least as good as a GH5 or G9 in that respect. As the review says "OMDS engineers have something to work on in the near future"

It's a real shame they didn't test the DCI 4K option. In both the EM1iii and the EM1ii this is clearly the best option, with significantly more detail than the UHD readout.

In fact, I praise Canon's efforts to give us this marvelous 2022 device, I'm sorry guys but I don't buy the customary negativism towards them this time ; ) Without mention the 5D series since the legendary and really re(D)volutionary Mark II and the M... let alone coupled to ML ;- )

Too bad they seem to have fucked it all up once again 🤭

  10. @kye You’re the guy who wrote that the “new” canons have “clay like skin”? That statement alone kind of disqualifies you from any serious color science debate, no matter how many lengthy posts you write with images from high end productions shot on high res (lol) pro cinema cameras.

  11. People whining about some sort of clay like skin tones with the new Canon codecs/sensors have too much time on their hands, what are you even talking about?

I owned the R5 and it was impeccable as a stills camera, but it certainly had it short comings in the video department - but skin tones and colors are as per usual outstanding, even with the 10bit h265 codec.

The whole Alexa worshipping is getting ridiculous and if you really want that but can’t afford it, buy the a7siii and Emotive colors -  only 1 percent would know the difference.

I called it.....no way they would get away with $6K. No IBIS really sucks, it will remain to be seen how good the digital IS + Lens IS is. I am also trying to figure out of the power port is USB-C or if it actually needs the full wall power supply which would be another major bummer since I already have a V-Mount USB-C setup for my other cameras.

I am curious about this as well, dual ISO would be awesome. I would think they could use the same sensor and just route it to dual gain circuits but maybe it is not that simple.

Dual ISO is confirmed in the menus and several people show it on Youtube.

I don't think this is a deal breaker IF the camera can be powered off of USB-C. The power draw is probably so great it almost makes sense. If it needs a full AC power supply though that would be a bummer but still not a complete deal breaker for me since I would probably never shoot 8K60.

Don't even breathe such a thing....now THAT would be a complete deal breaker for me and was the #1 reason that I lost interest in the C70. I absolutely need IBIS for the type of handheld shooting that I do and I hate the jittery look of C70 handheld footage. I am almost certain Canon would not make such an egregious error.

Hate to say I told you so - no IBIS. Which makes me happy. No sensor floating around making the camera less robust, no nauseating wobble when on the wide side and now they can mount the heatsink closer to the sensor.

  14. Some really beautiful footage here from the R3. Will be interesting to see how Nikon's own raw files will compare.

Thoughts on the camera by the guy who shot the video:

No, this camera will not replace any dedicated video camera. The lack of proper video assist tools like built in ND, no false colour, waveform etc means that you do need to carry extra accessories to make it work. I also found the IBIS on this camera to be disappointing. Even inputting the correct focal length in IBIS resulted in shaky footage. You also can't use zebras and focus peaking at the same time which resulted in me missing focus for the last shot :(. This is still a hybrid camera with stills in mind. Quick test in 1080 also show extremely soft images. I would not recommend shooting 1080 in this camera at all unless it's for simple jobs or for fun.

That being said, the 6k on this is... beautiful. My computer can't handle the 6k at all but the final file is gorgeous. I do find the shadows to be much noisier than my C70. Dynamic range is very pleasing and it's quite hard to completely blow out highlights unless you make a mistake or are in extreme situations (like the shot in the bus). The Canon FD primes worked wonders softening the digital edge on the sensor giving it a much more organic look. Files are detailed and rich. The raw is also very capable of making drastic white balance changes without destroying the image. Very happy with the results albeit was a pain for storage and editing.

  15. I'll go out on a limb and say that the Canon R5 is the most underrated HYBRID camera, especially after seeing how the A7sIII practically took over the Youtube circle jerk crowd in the blink of an eye.

The R5 got rightfully panned because of the overheating failure and extremely poor marketing, but take another look at it now. It's a brilliant stills camera with great autofocus, colors and resolution and the shutter sound is subliminal. It's also a 10bit 422 video camera that I for the life of me can't get to overheat when recording 4K standard (which I know is softer which I actually prefer) and the s35 oversampled crop mode is rock solid, it doesn't overheat no matter how hot the ambient temperatures are.

Still better colors than Sony, very good rolling shutter performance and a huge amount of glass if you are willing to use adapters. And it feels like a camera, the ergos are perfect.
