Probably price. The C70 will still be worthy for its DGO sensor which gives higher DR than R5. also internal NDs, XLRs, battery life, WFM etc..

Some exciting news for both R5 & R6 users! 🙂 New 4K codec could hopefully mean no more transcoding for 10-bit footage. R5C rumor is also interesting, looks like Canon's answer to FX3. And a worthy successor to 1DC (minus the price tag I hope!).

Good question, I also usually just follow 180 degree rule blindly and shoot 50p at 1/100 with slow-mo in mind. Maybe 50p at 1/50 makes more sense for non slomo on a 25p timeline..? Yes 4K50p is the same 5.5K oversampled quality 4K. 4K crop mode is a slightly upsampled sub-4K region (3414 x 1920 pixels). You'd have to pixel peep to notice the difference. I guess its worth noting 4K60p crop mode on the R6 gets you the lowest RS: 10.2ms. Manual WB with Clog in Neutral seems pretty good, I haven't done extensive tungsten tests though.

AWB-White works in Clog. I'm just saying if you have to use kelvin or custom you may wanna help skin tones by going Neutral in Clog.

The yellow cast thing only becomes a problem in mixed lighting, if you're using AWB you simply need to hit info inside the settings and select white priority as warm is the default. In custom or kelvin, switch to Clog and select Neutral color matrix. You can also further adjust WB tint in the RGB matrix. Concerning 4K rolling shutter on R6 you can half the RS from 30ms to 15ms just by shooting in 4K60p (and convert to 24/25p in post) and down to 20ms in 4K crop mode.

@ntblowz Nice! Interesting to see the photographer was on a R6. Looks like although its a Canon sponsored event, you were using your own gear? Was the R5/C70 footage shot in standard, log or RAW?

I feel Sony & Nikon are both playing catch up towards Canon who leapfrogged the whole industry bringing 8K RAW/10-bit to the FF hybrid market with DPAF. The real question IMO is going to be who manages to bring a body that doesn't overheat? We already know the A1 overheats in 4K/8K XAVC-SI (I read reports ranging from 16mn to 30mn depending on frame rate, resolution & temperature). Will Nikons larger body allow better heat dissipation? 1DX3 seems to do so versus the smaller R5/R6 bodies. Nikon also need to up their video AF performance, allow internal log etc. Their lack of cine department really shows vs the competition. Always seems to be some crucial feature missing..

@plucas : I just tried that exact test and can confirm similar findings: EOS Original log matrix has the yellow cast while Neutral remains more faithful. Doesn't really matter what WB settings you are in.

I guess it depends what you're shooting. My experience with Canon's DPAF system is it can lose focus on very low contrast subjects in low-light conditions. Depending on the sensor YMMV. In less extreme conditions it remains imo the best, most natural & reliable AF system. It gets even better with (1DX3, R5, R6) DPAF2. 1DX3 does drop AF features in HFR modes where R5/R6 doesn't. C200/C300MK3/C70 have the handy Face-Only feature that doesn't refocus the background when subject leaves frame. Other neat Canon AF features are the various zone, point, face, track modes you can easily toggle via assignable button. DPAF isn't magical though and in use there are times when you'll want to disable it. Even just for a quick second or two during panning. I absolutely love that you can also assign any button to toggle on/off the AF. The DPAF assisted manual focus 'focus guide' feature is also pretty cool for accurate focus racking. That said latest gen Sony's (FX/A7S3) have come a long way it seems. I still see some micro-hunting in some of the footage and those weird breathing issues so I'm not quite sure its 100% reliable yet.

watched all three videos. the guy in the first one doesn't even mention what his problem with the af was, second video actually praises the face-only feature on the C70 vs 1DX3, third mentions the camera had trouble focusing darker skinned people in low light conditions but not in daylight. So yeah I guess you could conclude the C70's AF isn't stellar, it is still probably ahead most other cine cams. Sony cams have issues as well by the way:

Sure point me to some reviews. the Brandon Washington one I linked earlier is by a black dude, he does an AF test on another black dude and his conclusion is that C70 struggles in low-light VS FX6 that is FF. 1DX3/R5 are also FF and have DPAF2.

Lol, Please don't bring race into this.. even if you're joking, let's stay factual: according to tests Eye-AF on C70 is disabled on HFR, period. Under 60FPS, DPAF is proven superior to Sony AF (i.e. no pulsing).

Right, but according to Gerald Undone, the C70 actually has superior DR than FX6/A7S3 (with NR turned off) at 60p and below. So it's kind of a toss up as far as DR imo.

You’re right, hadn’t realized the FX6/FX3/A7S3 can’t do 4K S35 crop, that eliminates a ton of lens & punch-in options. I guess advantage R5/R6 who can do both and C70 as well with the speed booster.

8K is no joke. Forum users like @gt3rs use it to reframe & grab stills amongst other user cases. 4K HQ mode on R5 does exactly that (8K downsampled 4K). It DEFINITELY shows finer & clearer 4K than non-oversampled 1:1 4K. 1DX3/R6 also downsamples from 5.5K and shows similar 4K improvements. Personally, after experiencing 10-bit 4:2:2 log on R6, I can't go back to 8-bit log for grading. MJPEG is also a stone-age codec to manage. Good riddance. That said, I can't deny early Canon CS has a certain mojo (still own my early 5D's & C100). 5D3 ML 14-bit RAW is still the golden standard as far as I'm concerned color-wise. Would be interesting to see how R5 RAW and 10-bit Clog fares against a 1DC.

Sony has a 'look' but the sensor is only a small part of it. As others mention, the color science, image processing, picture profiles, codecs/resolution, lenses etc have a much stronger impact on final IQ. For the most part, Sony makes damn good sensors which is why other manufacturers that can't do better in-house buy them.

The Canon VariND adapter is the only native behind lens solution for a hybrid mirrorless system AFAIK. I can’t wait to receive mine, game changer for sure.

There are several tests out there that have shown it overheating, not to mention why would the FX3 add active cooling if it didn’t have overheating? As for my A7iii comment, I was referring to the 6K oversampled IQ vs 4K 1:1 readout of the A7Siii. Obviously the A7S3 has other strong advantages such as 10-bit internal, super low rolling shutter & 4K120p.

@gt3rs Loving those screen grabs, I hadn't even thought of the 8K RAW benefits for that purpose. For any type of fast action just scrub to that perfect frame, extract it, reframe, retouch.. etc. Just brilliant. That and the 4K120p kinda makes me regret not splurging the extra cash for an R5. Still couldn't really justify it at this particular point in time with work so slow here post-COVID. Also mad envious, ski resorts are shut down here in France. Where is that by the way? Sick hors piste action..

The A7S3 overheats too, just not as bad and it can't do 8K or RAW. Its 4K isn't oversampled either so in some ways the older cheaper A73 has a more detailed IQ. Also 12MP for stills is a major downside (vs the 45MP on R5). If you're not a hybrid shooter and only video matters than you might as well skip the R5 & A7S3 and go straight for FX3/FX6 or C70 imo. Right, my point was that the Nikon Z6/Z7 can't do any type of internal log which is kind of a joke. Personally, I can't go back to 8-bit 4:2:0 log after having 10-bit 4:2:2 log, difference is major when it comes to grading.

I've never dealt with Canon USA as I'm EU based but have always heard their CPS service was good. You mention this happened during Covid lock-down, perhaps that is the culprit? Good luck with Sony CPS service, I heard they have the slowest turnover for repairs. That said FX6 + A1 sounds like a fire combo. The overheating timers have been proven to be artificial, especially on the initial firmware. Doesn't really matter if you're in Cali or Antartica. There is an easy hack to work around this though and basically start shooting immediately after it overheats. You could also fallback to 4K non HQ mode which never overheats. Not ideal perhaps but its the price to pay for such features as 8K downsampled 4K in 10-bit 4:2:2 with DPAF. FYI, the Z6 can't even do internal log in 8-bit.

@TomTheDP Not complaining either, 20ms is indeed fine and you can get down to 15ms in FF UHD just by shooting in 4K60p. Overall I'm finding R6 to be excellent bang for the buck.

Right, the FHD is miles better than on previous gen Canons but you won't be getting the yet unrivalled SOOC 4k downscaled FHD like on the C100. I'm holding on to my C100 despite its age for that purpose alone.
