It is better to get your stuff in front of ten right people that in front of 10.000 lurkers on Instagram. No one gives a damn what you publish on Vimeo, etc... unless you can make it seen. For this you need some kind of credible release plattform (film festival, fashion show, exhibition, features etc.... Collaborations with other circles work for us pretty well to get new people recognise what we are doing....

I have a friend that used to never want to have anything to do with social media. Then again, he also paid for everything cash, because who knows who's keeping track of the digital traces you leave behind. Now that he has started his own business, he's all about social media and without embracing it he probably would never have seen the growth he has now. Unfortunately you're better of being an attention whore than keeping faith you will catch your break eventually. Your content might be king, but if it doesn't reach the eyeballs of someone recognizing your talent because you're hoping they will bump into it magically, opposed to actively promoting your material... then maybe there's something to it after all. Of course, being true to yourself is a noble thing... so if you can manage to get by without selling your soul then by all means stay sane! In the end of it, it's all a matter of perspective... there's 2 things in particular you mention... 'popularity is the only thing that matters' & 'making films I'm proud of'. Which is the more important one? Of course you can do something in between... like just showing some natural excitement for what you're doing by sharing little bits and pieces, keeping people in the loop... rather than just having to come across forced and spammy.

Heck we all suffer about it, that we don't have enough of it.
If I had a ton of money I would be down in the Keys drinking Corona's and fondling my Arri Alexa XL. I would not be any better as a filmmaker because of the camera, and that I would probably be too drunk all the time to use it very well anyway.
Oh and on a grim antidote. I have it in my will that when I die I am going to be cremated and my ashes thrown off the back of a boat, buried at sea in a sense, in Key Largo, my favorite place on earth other than maybe Naples, Italy.  A old sailor thingy.

Seriously, I do not understand where this aggression is coming from, maybe you have some complexes with Greece, or Stalinists (you know nothing about Greek politics, this government passed extreme neo-liberal laws that the socialists/conservatives/multi party governments couldn't before).
    1) I was asked about the Greek weddings, and replied, the story was ending there, until you came to save the integrity of the forum (or Sony, didn't understand)
    2) didn't attack anyone, and I asked from Paul to excuse me, if the first sentence I ever wrote was offensive to him
    3) just suggested my experiences of the a6500 being not appropriate for A camera as a wedding day, and the person we exchanged posts agreed that his friends using this cam as B/C or gimbal cam, and that is exactly what I said
    4) my issues with this camera (and the a6300), are stated by the op on the CON segment of his original post, and I just add some facts.
    5) in my UK University we were using our sources to our academic writings and Wikipedia wasn't the most preferable source, so I am trying to avoid it, while the only thing you do is some exercises in your creative writing course and try to use impressive words to cover the lack of facts and knowledge.
I don't know you, do not remember any of your posts, do not care, you are not going to play any role in my life.

hansel got a reaction from Kisaha in Variable ND filters for video?
I shoot the Heliopan Vario ND for 4 years and it was working very well.
The only other tip I have is get the biggest filter you can e.g. 77mm. You can always step up to the filter but step down you can't!

You generally need some type of ND when shooting outdoors at wide aperture. For scripted shooting, a matte box and drop-in fixed filters may work, but for documentary, news, run-and-gun, etc. a variable ND is handy. This is why upper-end camcorders have long had built-in selectable ND filters.
However with the move to large sensors, the entire optical path gets larger. It becomes much harder both mechanically and optically to fit multiple precision fixed ND filters inside. The surface area of an optical element increases as the square of the radius, so it becomes much harder (and more expensive) to make a perfectly flat multicoated filter. The Sony FS5 has an electronic variable ND, showing how important this is for video.
It doesn't make sense to put a $20 filter on a $2500 lens. However filter price and quality are not necessarily directly related.
In documentary video I've used many different variable ND filters, and here are a few things to look for:
    (1) If at all possible get one that fits inside a lens hood. This is the most difficult requirement since there are no specs or standards for this. You use a variable ND outside under bright (often sunny) conditions -- the very conditions where you need a lens hood. However most variable ND filters and most lenses are incompatible. The ideal case would be certain Sony A or E-mount lenses with a cutout in the lens hood which allows turning the variable ND filter without removing the hood. However it's very difficult to find one which fits.
    (2) Get one with hard stops at the end of each range. Otherwise it's difficult to tell where you are on the attenuation scale, and this adds a few seconds which can make you miss a shot.
    (3) Get one which does not exhibit "X" patterns or other artifacts at high attenuation. This typically happens with filters having more than 6 stops attenuation.
    (4) Get one which has the least attenuation on the low end, ideally 1 stop or less. This reduces the times you have to remove the filter when shooting inside. A filter which goes from 1-6 stops is likely more useful and less likely to have artifacts at high attenuation than one which goes from 2-8 stops.

I agree the colours are stunning. They have a really advanced 3D colour science engine in there with a huge pop. All the footage I've shot so far I've not even felt the need to grade it or tweak in post, it's just super crisp and rich. Feels chunky and deep like a full frame Nikon still.
Dual Pixel AF is the only thing it lacks. This will be a camera that makes a lot of people very happy but obviously it cannot please everyone.
Yes it would be nice to have reliable and fast AF for video but we've coped with manual focus for a long long time.
The issue is that to do contrast detect AF you need 240fps+ refresh rate for speed and obviously 4K at 240fps is not doable yet and you can't do a separate low-res window of the sensor to perform AF while doing a 24fps full pixel readout, so it slows down compared to photos / live-view.

They fucked up because Canon fails to understand that entry to medium range ($1000-$3000) camera with good video capabilities would generate some substantial sales and there is definitely a market segment here (eg GH4).  Even if this "video DSLR" market segment represents 3-5%; Is the Camera industry doing so well that they can ignore it ?
They fucked up because now this market segment is being taken by Panasonic and Sony and people who make the switch are not going to come back.
They fucked up because some conservative executives in Japan think that delivering decent video feature in DSLR/Miroless body would hurt their pro-cinema line when actually the pro do need a real pro camera with built in ND, XLR and all the pro cam features.
They fucked up to comprehend that the amateurs or video enthusiasts like me can't spend the money they don't have for an expensive Pro camera and even if I had the money I need something small capable of doing video and stills (plus having a nice full frame sensor and not S35). It has nothing to do with cannibalization, Sony does have A7 and FS line and they do just fine because they know it's two different market.
Bottom line is that I laugh at the 5D4, I pre-order the GH5 and I'm not spending a dime anymore on Canon gears. I may not be the typical core market guy for Canon but is the camera industry doing so well than they can ignore the 3-5% video/stills folks and laugh at the face of customers who invested a lot $$$ over the years ?

I also agree with you that the DL had alot on paper. And I dont believe for a second that the "sensor and processor" has anything to do with sales. Im pretty sure 99 out of 100 that buys a camera doesn't even know they have processors. Let alone if its the latest model or not.

A sinister grade LoL. I would turn down all sharpening and lower contrast by a fair amount, not a lot though, in camera, to smooth out the videoish look m4/3 cameras have baked in. Nobody is going to equate a MFT camera with a film look no matter what you do.
In reality they have too many MP to get that look. 4k is only like 8.3mp, heck 1080 is only like 2.2mp, 720 is only like 1mp.  And most people only have a LCD TV that shows 720 max. Heck old stuff like Gunsmoke, Mary Tyler Moore show, Price is Right all are in shot in 480! So most modern consumer cameras have Way too much resolution for video use. Sony A7s is an exception.
When I shot TV news with  $100,000.00 Sony ENG cameras they only had a max in camera resolution of 500 lines. Hence 480 output. Pretty crazy. But that was back in the time of Tube TV's and 3 tube, 2/3 Video Cameras.

The m4/3 might be doing ok but its still nothing compared to Canon. And Fuji is eating away at their fan base every day.
But I do think Panasonic is in more trouble than Olympus. I don't know any Panasonic still shooters. And that's where the real money still is, not in video.
But there is currently way to many options compared to people buying cameras.
    Someone's gotta go.

Honestly give me a D750 with the same DR/color in 4K 10-bit and I will buy one immediately. I still to this day go back and forth on buying a D750 again, but I hold out hope it's successor will have 4K. I wanted these compacts, badly.

It seemed like when Nikon released the D750 and D810 they were on a roll and then THUD rolled into a ditch.
They have done nothing interesting for 3 years.
And between the D5300 and D-whatever they are on now, also nothing interesting.
GoPro rival was a joke... Released just as the action cam market was over the hill... Yet to give the whole show to it at Photokina last year smacks of management issues too.
Nikon could have entered the cinema market, they have the optics, sensors, everything...
They could have gone into high end mirrorless market, the brand is stronger than Sony.
    Didn't... didn't... didn't.
They won't survive like this... They are taking zero risks.

This was recorded on the SL in 4K DCI L-log and a Pix-E5H recorder.
The SL is an interesting beast if you want good video and stills.  Only downsides I can see are $ and that if you want AF then the native lens are big and expensive. While its expensive, Lecia tend to hold their resale value so if you look at total cost of ownership, it may end not being too bad.
I for one would much rather have the SL body only than a Sony + lens.
