Happy Christmas everyone. Anybody getting anything camera-related for themselves or family?
I myself am tempted by a used Hasselblad X1D which is now down to £2400. Must resist

Purchased the base 16” model this weekend and coming from a mid 2012 retina as expected, I’m blown away! I purchased a Sony a6500 about 18 months ago and the 2012 even with transcoding, was not a smooth editing experience. The computer was simply too out of date. This new base 16” I’m happy to report is awesome. To be clear I shoot as a hobby and for my own creative projects. I uploaded about 5 minutes worth of slog2 h.264 4K footage to a 4K premiere pro timeline and I was able to breeze through the timeline with NO dropped frames. This included an adjustment layer with a lut. Performance is just a massive upgrade and I am happy!

This thread seems to be getting waaaay off-topic, this is about video editing on the new 16" MBP, not the old windows vs mac or laptop vs tower discussion, smh..

So if anyone is actually in possession of the new Macbook Pro and can share some experiences regarding workflow in FCP, Premiere and DaVinci that would be very interesting, in particular in regards to the different configurations offered.

I will try that. I checked the source files and it’s not an error in the actual file so it must be something with the encoding screwed up. I came across a thread or two of hardware affecting exporting in resolve with artificers and other weirdness. Maybe this is it? Surely not. I’ll do as you suggest and report back!

Never heard of that before..  try exporting the project as something high quality (like Prores HQ?) and see if the dud frame is in that file.  If not, you can use the Media Management tool to transcode it to the h264 file you need for YT.

So this machine is kind of a tactic admission by Apple they lost the prosumer desktop market to Windows PCs and have given up ever trying to get it back.
So they are aiming at pro businesses and studios, not individuals.
If you are an individual who can afford to drop over $11k in one go on a base spec Apple computer + 6K screen, and perhaps more like $18,000 if you want the better specced versions, you are very lucky indeed and in an absolutely vanishingly tiny minority!!
It beats me why they did not also announce a $2k upgradable modular desktop for the rest of us??? Or does it... PCs, that's why.
But I want Mac OS and I am pretty upset at having to stick with comparatively slow iMacs and MacBooks for so many years. The 2013 Mac Pro is a bit of a bad joke in performance terms in 2019 by the way, so that's not an option either.

I had that confusion at first too.  The other part of the puzzle is the Linked Selection toggle switch in the toolbar:

It's the one in the middle with the two chain links.  If you have two linked clips and that toggle is on then clicking on one will select both, but (what I think you might have done) is to untoggle that option and even if the clips are linked you will now only select or move one of the linked clips and not both.

I also edit on a MBP and I have also noticed the Colour tab is slower.  I suspect it's the extra work required to generate the waveforms.  Try turning them off?
In a sense there isn't a preferred workflow, it's whatever works for you.
Colour grading is fiction.  If the goal was to make the image look like reality we'd be using colour checkers and just using technical LUTs and the job would be done.  Instead we do film emulations by artificially colouring shadows and highlights, compressing and expanding dynamic range according to our preferences, etc etc.
In general though, it's wise to have a basic workflow:
Do any exposure or WB corrections (that should have been done in-camera but weren't) Convert from LOG / HLG to the output format (rec709, HLG) Match shots Colour grade however you like Export

I've found Blackmagic's tutorial videos on youtube to be an excellent way to get a grip on Resolve. I went cold turkey since I didn't have anything critical looming and just worked my way through them, ignoring what I normally do in PP and FCP. After a few small projects I'm starting to feel really comfortable with it. I have an 8-day travel shoot starting next week, that will be a series of 2-3 min pieces and a longer wrap, all will be done in the new Cut tab. So far R16 has been really stable for me. Love it.
    And its free. Amazing.

Thought this might be able to be my next vlogging camera, as with the Sony 20mm pancake it could be a pretty sweet compact setup. I can even overlook the selfie screen / hotshoe clashing, but no IBIS??
Sorry, the cheaper Panasonic G85 still reigns supreme in my desires to by my next vlogging camera.

Good article Andrew.  I would like to see you also do an article that is your current top cameras, regardless of release date.  I'm sure you'd provide some interesting commentary and some inclusions from previous years that are still holding their own against the newest releases.  It would be of real value to those who are in the market too.

Nice to hear you're having a good experience!
In case you're not aware of it, the second level of caching to keep that performance even if you've got a million effects applied is to render the relevant parts of the timeline.  To do this, go to Playback -> Render Cache -> set to User.  Then on the timeline, right-click on the relevant clips and select Render Cache Colour Output and it will render those clips with the grading you've applied to that clip, like the Render Timeline in days of old.
You can also set the Render Cache to Smart and it tries to work out which bits of the timeline to render for you, sometimes it gets it right and other times it doesn't, but it can be useful.  There's also the Playback -> Proxy Mode settings, which I'm not that clear on, but I think they reduce the resolution of the preview window, requiring less work to play things in the preview window.
Also of note is that Resolve has two playback modes, toggled by the Show All Video Frames option in the context menu on the viewer window (on the top-right corner of the viewer there is a button with three dots which opens the menu).  If that option is enabled it will show all frames and if it can't keep up then the sound will cut in and out, and if that option is disabled and it can't keep up then it will play the timeline at normal speed with continuous audio but with a jerky video component.  If Resolve can keep up then that option doesn't make any difference.
Performance in Resolve is managed by many different methods and settings.  This flowchart is old but might still be useful for some.

I just wanted to report, after shooting around the holidays with my A6500 in 4k 24fps and 1080 120fps, I wanted to test Davinci Resolve's Optimize Media render times. I must say I am IMPRESSED. I was able to make ProRes LT proxies and now my timeline is buttery smooth. The real kicker is the speed at which it was able to do this for me. In the past I had tried to use premiere to do this, but my computer would wind up crashing after 40 minutes. I was able to get around 80 4k clips and 40 120fps clips (various time lengths) optimized in around 45 minutes. I've been going crazy researching for a new laptop but my gosh perhaps, I can hold off and keep saving in the meantime with this awesome feature. Another tick in the pro's column for Davinci Resolve and another ding in the "Going Back to Premiere". (So far I really don't see myself going back..considering I'm on the free version and it's doing just fine...)

I think I would go with a bigger power supply, that is just about minimum this day and age, But that CPU is pretty good yet in this day and age. And I just don't think that GPU is going to make it for 4K usage. It is below a GTX 970, and that is not so hot either now. Look at buying a used GPU. Gamers are always upgrading, dumping their last year high end stuff. Buy it off Amazon, you can always send it back if it is not as described. Even Craigslist in the states has some good buys on gamer stuff used.
And I hope your eyesight is pretty good. A 25" monitor in this day and age is pretty damn small for editing. I know people use Laptops to edit, but if you look at them straight on their eyeballs are crossed LoL. There is tons of 27's out. 2K is not too bad, but now with HLG, HDR maybe time for a 4K monitor? A sort of future proof purchase. Again a used one is not the worse thing. A lot of gamers are going to 120 hz ones, so 60 hz ones are around used.

Every cam has its limitations but yeah if it's a Canon it's gotta be a "bug" and if you enjoy the cam then you're either a "shill" or an apologist. SMH.
Sony cameras overheat, their codecs max out at 100mb with no Intra or 10-bit out options, zombie colors and have poor weather sealing.
Nikon Z has no internal log & average to poor AF system. XT3 has no IBIS, no FF stills & poor battery life.
GH5 poor low light, bad AF, small sensor..etc.
No camera is perfect, pick your weapon(s) of choice and make the most out of it.

I regularly rent the cams you mention (especially FS7 & Ursa Mini) for jobs but ownership wise i'm on a EOS R + C100.
I was days away from buying C200 (even had a down payment) and postponed the purchase when the Canon mirrorless rumors heated up.
I can confidently say now I will definitely be upgrading to C200 (just waiting for the right time & deal).
BTW, here in EU they cost around 7000€, and you can find them for much less second hand when they pop up.
I plan on using the combo as such:
BTW, nothing wrong with going other routes (GH5+EVA1 / A73+FS5/FS7 / BMP4K+UMP) I'm just a sucker for Canon ergonomics, color science, lenses etc..

So far so good, after a couple weeks its becoming very intuitive - almost as fast as FCPx with better audio editing tools. I'm focusing on my three needs -- audio production, grading and most of all editing. I'm really liking just about everything about it. Its replacing FCPx & an older version of Protools, or Premiere and Audition depending on the project. Its really well sorted on just about all fronts, if you see the logic behind it, it really makes sense. That's why I like the BM video so much, they show a lot of really great features that I hadn't discovered in other overview videos I've gone through in the last few weeks. What seemed like a really steep learning curve is actually no worse than any other NLE I've worked with, it just has its own process and its actually pretty easy to grasp once you see the basics. And its so easy to move between editing, audio production and grading, I love just clicking on the icons on the bottom and bouncing between media, edit, color and audio. It took awhile to wrap my head around nodes and the ways to link them, how to use them and so on, now it makes perfect sense.
I just have to figure out how to get it to show the estimated file size when exporting a finished edit, so I can adjust the bitrate to suit file size limitations like Facebook uploads without waiting for the finished product. Most of the time its not an issue, but I was doing 1-hour versions of a Yule Log project and getting the file size correct took a few tries, at about 4 hours each. Then there was the 8-hour version ( lots of looping) that took 22 hours to export. And it took 4 tries to get the bitrate right and it froze on me a couple of times. Grrr.... But I think the project just overtaxed my ram or video card. On shorter pieces, like 30 sec to 6 min its been fantastic, and really fast from start to finish.
And that manual, aye. Seems like a good chunk is Fusion and that one is way beyond most of my needs. I'm not a motion graphics person, so I'm all about the templates. But I do need to learn to animate titles so after getting comfortable with grading, audio and editing I will start work with Fusion basics.
The above is a long winded way of saying no regrets about jumping in and making the switch. I really like the all-in-one solution. I tried v12 and didn't like it, but v15 is so much better. I'm now producing photo and video pieces for VISIT FLORIDA and Resolve is going to play a big part in what I do going forward. Eventually a Pocket 4k will too, I shoot a lot of sunrise/sunset stuff so raw will be a welcome addition sometime early next year.
Every day I spend 30 minutes or so on a tutorial to sharpen my skills. Thanks for all the help and resources. I check this thread almost daily to see if anyone posts anything new.
    Cheers

Just saw that Blackmagic has uploaded tutorials. The grading tut is linked above, but I found their intro video to be far more comprehensive than any other I've watched so far. If you're new to Resolve, this is where to start. There are a lot of clever tools and time savers that nobody else talks about. As an editor its far more powerful and well sorted than I first thought. I get all of this is in the manual, but I'm a visual learner and things like the edit overlay and how you can choose where your clip is inserted into the timeline is much easier to grasp when you see it in action. Highly recommended.

@kaylee I’ve been recording for about 10 years now. I wouldn’t personally use Adobe audition for a DAW. I used to use pro tools but for $299 I’d say pick up either Logic Pro or Studio One- no monthly payments for me lol. I personally use and LOVE studio one, I have the pro version3.
Next- get yourself a decent audio interface such a Focusrite Scarlett’s 2i4 or 2i2. These are pretty cheap around $100. Next you can use the sm58 but I’d pick up a $100 large diaphragm condenser microphone and a pop filter. If you are making beats you will want a midi keyboard at the minimum. If you’re just buying beats then this won’t be necessary. Spend some time on YouTube and find some good tutorials but it’s not any harder than video editing, just a different creative hat to wear!
Finally pick up a good pair of studio headphones or monitors so you can accurately hear everything. Nice studio monitors can help with video editing too btw. I have a set of KRK RP5’s and the KRK Kns 8400 headphones. These are fantastic!

    best of luck!

Not all plugins are compatible with it so worth checking if your particular one is as Affinity Photo would offer you an option to break from Adobe completely for the price of a few month's subscription.

The scaling happens automatically.  Resolve handles almost anything you throw at it. Resolutions, framerates, bit-depths, gamma or colour spaces, the whole lot, and it does it so transparently that when I hear that other software doesn't it just makes me confused why anyone would write software any other way.
I also have photoshop as well as Resolve, they're good for different things.

Just wanted to say thanks to all of you for contributing to this thread, I will be bookmarking it.
After 5 years of paying for the creative cloud, (most on the student discount) I simply cannot afford $60/mo. If it was the student price I would consider. That said, I have briefly played around with resolve, edited a few clips and watched a few tutorials and I think I should be just fine lowering my adobe to just photoshop. The only reason I’m keeping photoshop is I use a film correction plugin for scanning 35mm film (photography not video) and $10 a month is something I can afford.
As with any creative outlet I always like to pick the best tool for the job and budget, I’m looking forward to diving into resolve. It might take a few projects to get that muscle memory going but I’m pumped!
At the moment I shoot 4k on my Sony a6500 and downscale to 1080p timeline for super crispy 1080p. In resolve will this downscaling happen automatically upon drag and drop or will I need to set it up to do so?
