    +1
IBIS only: good for handheld but mostly static
    Gimbal: same + walking
gimbal + ibis: used it on a RX100, a dream. You can run and get smooth footages.
IBIS can't replace a gimbal yet. It's a nice to have though especially when you can't have the gimbal with you.

Doubt it. A gimbal will still be essential for sweeping and moderate moving shots.
The combo of gimbal and a powerful IBIS will be excellent.

I don't bother looking at charts. Just try out a few cameras, see what looks best, and shoot with it.

I do agree that DXO's rankings are a bit questionable, but not too far off.  There are generally valid explanations of the issues you cited:
NX500 over 5DS and NX1:  I've personally handled 5DSR files, and can say that the IQ is terrible. Even Canon stated not to expect much more than their old APS-C cameras in the IQ department.  I've read a few times that the NX500 is considered to have higher IQ than the NX1.  By how much, I don't know.  But viewing test RAWs of the NX1, I'd say DR and high ISO are around 1/2 stop behind the Nikon D7200.
DXO One:  Its Super RAW literally is super.  It takes 4 RAW files, stacks them, and averages out the noise.  The difference is dramatic.  While the detail level isn't the best at high ISO, the lack of noise is well beyond FF capability.  This is similar to Olympus' high res RAW mode, but instead of increasing resolution, it reduces noise and increases detail at the same output size.
D3X over D5:  The D5 is a bomb below ISO 1600, nearly matching the 5D III.  Even crop sensors beat it.  The sensor is tuned for mid/high ISO performance, though current technology only goes so far.  The gains, while there (+1/2 stop vs 1DX II), really aren't worth the trade off for the flexibility in low ISO RAW.  Worthy of note is that the D3X has a Sony sensor, while the D5 is Nikon's own creation.
D600 over 1DX II and P40+:  It's true.  The D600 kills the 1DX II in DR at base ISO, and at worst, ties it the rest of the way up.  the 1DX II literally has years-old crop sensor performance in that area, despite Canon's massive gain in their new generation of sensors.  High ISO is also neck and neck.

Vs the P40+, the sensor in the MF camera is quite old.  Despite having the resolution advantage, it loses out in DR and high ISO by quite a big margin.  By ISO 1600, colors turn to mush, which doesn't really happen on the D600 at any ISO.
D3s and D700:  I've also worked with files from a D700 multiple times, and can say that yes, its sensor is outdated at this point.  It's competitive with today's crop sensor cameras (minus Canon's) at best.  The A7S/II sensor has been compared to current medium format in its DR and ability to reproduce color.

Once again, the D3s/D700's sensor is Nikon's own.  Nikon isn't very competitive when it comes to sensors, and probably had its best attempt at competing with Sony in the D4/s/f.  All of the rest of their sensors just don't stand out, though aren't as bad as Canon's. I have a feeling that resolution plays a big part in DXO's rankings.  If you downscale the A7R II's files to A7S II size, they will certainly have an advantage in their "Sports" rating. It might also be why the A7R II beats the D810, when the D810 clearly has about 1/3 stop advantage at high ISO.  My friend tested 2x A7R IIs before returning them and keeping his D810.  #IQsnob.
For DR and high ISO, they test noise up to a certain amount.  How they get to that amount, who knows, but it's a cutoff point they chose that represents the transition from "OK" noise to offensive noise.  So while sensors may have DR response up to a certain amount of stops, after a point, it becomes wiser to turn things back a bit in software.  Where that happens is up to the user, as it's a more subjective choice.
And "Color" is more about correctly reproducing color in RAW than how the final JPG is rendered.  Color in the Canon sense is highly subjective.  Color against a known testing scene/chart isn't.

I typically use a LUT as my base line, and grade from there. I too use iwltbap LUT's, and he has good ones, some I barely have to do any further grading while others will need a bit more. Don't expect to just drop in a LUT and be done. Usually needs some work

I tried a bunch of the IWLBTAP ones and ended up thinking that the Panasonic VLog to Rec709 LUT looks the best.
Having said that, I'll be getting Neumann's next version of VLOG LUTs when available.
I bought all the GH series cameras and I found them the easiest to use with their articulating screens, menu systems and custom controls.
I missed that about them when I went to the BMPCC (horrible controls), Sony A7s (bad color), A6300 (bad color and overheating) and Samsung NX1 (no articulating screen and no support but otherwise excellent).
Now that the GH5 has all that plus IBIS, 4K/60 and 10bit, I'm already in line with a pre-order.

benymypony reacted to jcs in Building a (complex) 4K Video Editing Machine that's also Quiet
Our 2010 2.93GHz 12-core MacPro with GTX 980ti couldn't edit complex 4K footage smoothly in Premiere Pro CC (in OSX El Capitan or Win10x64Pro). FCP X for the most part can handle medium complexity 4K (chroma key, multiple 4K streams at once, very high resolution stills (Ken Burns etc.). However, I'm quite a bit faster in PP CC, and I need to research plugins to replicate what I can do with Lumetri (if such a plugin exists). It was time to upgrade the video editing machine, and it seemed like building a Hackintosh would create a far faster machine than anything Apple currently has to offer.
The goal was to balance high performance with low noise on air cooling only (tricky!). Here's the machine:
Corsair Carbide Series 330R Blackout Edition Ultra-Silent Mid-Tower Case ASUS X99-DELUXE II LGA 2011-v3 ATX Motherboard (ASUS has fancier boards however this appears to be just as fast) Intel Core i7-6950X 3.0 GHz Ten-Core LGA 2011-v3 Extreme Edition Processor (have been buying or building dual CPU Xeons for over 10 years. The single chip high clock 10 core looked to be the best fit for video editing vs. lower clock more core Xeons) Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB (4x16GB) DDR4 3466 (PC4-27700) C16 with Airflow, Black CMK64GX4M4B3466C16 Noctua Dual Tower CPU Cooler for Intel LGA 2011-0/LGA 2011-3 Square ILM/1156/1155/1150 and AMD AM2/AM2+/AM3/3+,FM1/2 NH-D9L Noctua AAO Frame Design, SSO2 Bearing Premium Quality Quite Fan NF-A9 PWM (Extra fan for CPU cooler) ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 8GB ROG STRIX Graphics Card (STRIX-GTX1080-A8G-GAMING) (purchased over eVGA (normally favorite) due to heat issues with ACX 3 and the VRM chip) Corsair ML120 Pro, 120mm Premium Magnetic Levitation Cooling Fan CO-9050040-WW (to replace rear case fan) Corsair ML140, 140mm Premium Magnetic Levitation Fan (2-Pack) (to replace front fan and add additional fan to cool hard drives) Samsung 2TB 960 PRO M.2 Internal SSD (fastest drive available (~3.5GB/s), for OS, Apps, temp projects) WD 4TB Black 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal HDD (long term storage for video projects) EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P2 1000W Power Supply (higher quality PSU's increase component life and reliability) Microsoft Windows 10 Pro (64-bit, OEM DVD) (lower cost than download!) SanDisk 16GB Extreme USB 3.0 Flash Drive (downloaded Win10 from Microsoft and used key from DVD to create USB installer) I was able to get it stable at 3.96GHz (in turbo/boost) with core temps max around 65-69C (all fans running 100%, fan speed temp ramping tuned in bios). Memory was only stable at 2666 (so much for 3466 rating). It will run at 4-4.1GHz, however some cores temp spike to 80C, so is probably too much for this air cooling set up.
The latest NVidia drivers are still buggy with Premiere- the "black screen bug with Ultra key" is still present. I installed the latest CUDA development video driver figuring it might be more stable than the game-oriented drivers (black screen bug hasn't appeared in latest green screen project yet). 4K editing in software mode is pretty smooth (full res preview)! So if the GPU driver has severe bugs during a project I can switch to software mode and still work reasonably fast.
Windows 10's font rendering looks much crisper than El Capitan. Window rendering and overall GUI speed is also much faster- feels like you are working faster. Once Windows 10 checked out with Premiere Pro I dug a bit deeper into what it would take to install OSX (would test on a hard drive then replace with SSD). Here's the closest I found for this motherboard (uses apparently the same bios). Doable however a lot of time hunting down kext (kernel extensions) and trial and error. So for the time being the new machine is Windows only- I can access both machines through a USB switch for keyboard/mouse (monitors have dual inputs).
At idle this machine is nearly silent, much quieter than the 2010 MacPro. It's good to see that after 6 years there's been some progress in CPUs and memory (GPUs have had much more performance growth). The new NVMe PCI SSD drives are insanely fast, however 4K editing straight from a USB3 port and CFast 2.0 works fine (as does editing from a hard drive over SATA- not the bottleneck).
Hopefully this info will be helpful for anyone looking to build a fast and quiet 4K editing box.

If you want to see what I'm talking about, search 'Fuji XT2' and sort by Upload Date.  You'll be rewarded with a metric ton of computer generated slide shows, slide shows with computer-generated audio, low rez versions of copied videos from reputable YouTubers like Max Yuryev, DPReview, The Camera Store's or the Northrop's channel.

We shot on the Arri Amira and used Cooke S4i primes. I graded the project with Color Finale in FCPX. The green screen stuff was poorly shot and we used a C100 so the shots of Rachel are pretty muddy. We had a pretty minor budget but the project turned out pretty cool! LMK what you think and if you have any questions. And yes I was rocking a dirty stache at the time
