  1. The big question now being overheating, since 6K to 4K downscaling is very CPU intensive.
  2. It is a 16:9 crop of the APS-C area, just like all Sony (and other) cameras.
  3. With Sony you have to change the battery every hour or so and now with Canon you'll be changing cards even more frequently (if you can afford it).
  4. Another limitation to be aware of.
  5. Couldn't make it past 5 mins - the tone seemed so pretentious and fake. I enjoyed the movie, but this was so dramatic as if they just cured AIDS.
  6. For that price it is quite worth it. If you shoot video, chances are you are going to use adapters to adapt let's say Samyang's EF Cine lenses that you can then use on the next system you migrate to. 4K should last you 6-8 years at least, unless you need higher frame-rates. All of the other specs are top notch and will remain very good for a long while.
  7. So, is there some consensus on the overheating being a thing of the past? Anyone been using this FW for some time now?
  8. There is no way of doing this without pissing off many, many Atomos Shogun owners. Also, would you be happy knowing you had a 4K body all this time, but were "locked out" of the feature?
  9. I got some completely no brand batteries and the problem with them is that they do not communicate the left-over charge too precisely. This means that if you are at around 30% and you are doing a longer take (5+ mins) the battery might die unexpectedly and the whole video files is lost. If you get a low charge warning with the original battery, it writes the file before it dies (this is using Sony NEX-5N).
  10. Amazing if true. If only it were so easy as 1+1 when combining know-how, but the true benefits of such a acquisition will take years to manifest in full.
  11. I assume that SLR Magic 50mm f1.1 would have the same T stop spec or very similar - much cheaper and smaller, declicked: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/slr-magic-announces-the-new-cine-50mm-f1-1-fe-lens/ Although, a wide-open test would make the comparison much easier.
  12. It is time to upgrade. Looks like they all made enough money with their a7s that they can afford the mark II. The same will happen when Canon releases 5DIV. And where I am from, used a7s are being bought, since they are still incredible tools.
  13. I would say that this is down to public company image, which takes a long time to change. Probably until you reach a tipping point where a large enough percentage of users want to jump ship and the market is flooded with used bodies. Right now, the shift is happening at a slow pace, but it is happening.
  14. So a very talented and creative skateboarding filmer Fred Mortagne has already filmed the first clip using SL for Leica: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-37VZ2dXCI
  15. It is still a lot bigger than the a7 series (and without IBIS, which adds considerable bulk). It is the ugliest mirrorless camera after Samsung Galaxy NX.
  16. If the 4K footage is good you can just slap on some cheaper manual glass (like Samyang cine lenses) and forget about those overpriced AF Leica lenses. This is a competitor to 1DC for video I guess
  17. You guys are missing the point. This is not aimed at the video crowd. This is meant to be the next step in smartphone photography and I applaud it. The form-factor is there, now we just nee to wait a few iterations for the hardware to be perfected. And obviously, a mobile chip can be added easily, but battery life is probably a big issue with the first generation. You probably heard of multi shot noise reduction - burst of shots to reduce noise. Now imagine using multiple sensors and the same principle is applicable to moving subjects since they all fire at the same time. Also the slight difference in the capture angle gives info on the 3D characteristics enabling more realistic software bokeh? The difference of this and Lytro? This could just replace your smartphone while Lytro would replace your camera - and camera sales are declining. Also Lytro sacrifices so much resolution for a single trick (refocusing). I believe this will leave Lytro in the dust.
  18. I'm pretty sure that all manufacturers want a slim, flat phone with no bump for the camera module. It's a shame really, they are all competing within these restrictions of not standing out (yes, even Apple) and going for that golden profit margin to sales ratio. Kudos to Nokia for their Pureview phone - now bring it back with 4K and Android!
  19. New reporting is focused on garbage topics anyway, so the filming equipment has to be adjusted accordingly. I hope they are going to use that VHS filming app.
  20. Ok, so why not do a fan mod if you are a videographer and leave the bearbones version to the photographers (the intended market) - talking about a7rII, RX100II does not shutdown AFAIK? Your Z3 is waterproof (to an extent) while your LG is not. Heat dissipation is a compromise made for this - my GF has a Z3 compact and she never recorded 4K until is would overheat and I doubt many phone clips are really long. Sony's betting that a working phone is better than a water-damaged 4K-forever-filming phone. But then again, you would probably learn about this reading any review of the phone before buying.
  21. No downsampling = less CPU intensive, less heat.
  22. Because a successor is not on the horizon, while Sony's is already announced. Blame Canon for slow product iteration.
  23. Electronic variable ND filer is quite a big deal ... keep your ISO, f stop and shutter speed setting constant and let it do all the adjusting to light changes.
