1080p full frame, 4k 1.3x crop (between full frame and super35), 1080p super35 crop are the options. they're all decent, maybe super35 is better than full frame, but the 4k is easily the best

As the world goes nuts for the new A7rII and the impending Ursa mini, JVC seems to be overlooked yet with firmware 2.0 on the GY-LS300 (out in September) giving some great features, surely it deserves some recognition. Here's what it's got (will have):
    ● JVC Log
    ● Cinema 4K recording mode
    ● Prime Lens Zoom (that's right, zoom with your prime lens)
    ● Micro Four Thirds mount with Super 35 sensor (full frame with a speedbooster)
    ● .mov files (yay! no hunting down your files buried away in a far away folder)
    ● Duel SD card slots (no expensive cfast cards)
    ● 4:2:2 full HD up to 60p
    ● Built in ND filters
    ● XLRx2 audio
    ● Built in HD streaming engine over wifi and 4G LTE connectivity

So, on paper this certainly looks like a very capable camera. I myself will be upgrading in September so will wait till reviews for the Ursa mini, a7rII are out and plenty of user experience aired before deciding but surely this camera deserves a mention, why no love?
Check out this link on their site about the new firmware: http://pro.jvc.com/pro/pr/2015/releases/gyls300_v2.html

Thanks a G7 it is, as for the people discussing artistic impression and the likes. I have an idea in my mind for what I am looking to create and resolution is what I need to track small objects moving at large distances. Muddy images is not an option. Thank you all for assistance.

I'm also more of a writer than anything. Going for really human stuff, kind of like Cassavetes or Joe Swanberg, kind of episodic, but making sure to keep it all significant. I don't know if I'd be as comfortable as those guys with the actors improvising as much with my scripts, but don't have much experience there yet. With amateur actors and not being able to pay them much or anything, improvising a little might be necessary. I'm pretty much adding scripts to a drawer for now, tweaking them slightly and writing treatments for them just to be prepared. Actors are a big obstacle, and production budget. Though a slightly low-fi feel could be pretty great if I can get great performances. Like a bit of a documentary feel, emphasizing the acting even more. I have a really simple short that only needs two actors. I figure I should definitely try to do that one as soon as possible. This forum helped me feel more confident as a cinematographer, which is good considering I'll probably be my entire crew most of the time. Also, I've been interning for a friend's company, and his boss just sold a script to Clint Eastwood, so that'll hopefully lead to a lot of contacts, which is exciting. Sorry, trying not to use this as a rant about yourself thread, but it maybe kind of is for that  , which I'm not complaining about

We need more Zach's in here!

I mostly gravitate toward crime fiction. Started a production company with my childhood buddy called The Sabi Company nearly a decade ago. We've made 7 or 8 features in that time. As well as a handful of shorts. Our latest, Down and Dangerous, was our first genre picture and the first to not lose money.
We've also created Artis Entertainment to distribute our titles directly and through partnerships with other distributors. Most recently, we signed with Paramount to distribute Down and Dangerous internationally. To a filmmaker like me, that is an unforgettable milestone that I'm very proud of, even if it is a bit like winning the lottery.

The next movies include more action, a sci-fi survival story, a neo-noir, and hopefully countless others. I have no other creative or professional ambitions in life other than to make movies until i'm dead.

I haven't seen Drinking Buddies yet, but I heard it was good. Learning about characters and their story through the mundanities of the everyday was very intriguing.
I could've done without the full frontal and the live action sex scene with him and his girlfriend, but I don't blame him for doing it. That realism, no matter how exploitative, is what made him the darling of SXSW.
I, also really think he has a great model for independent filmmakers... Make as many movies as you can, as quick as you can, then reap the benefits from your catalogue of films.

Being the lone wolf I am, I'm probably not going to have anything going in the near future, but if I can get my shit together, it's probably going to be some short film that's either really disgusting and sick or something light, simple and revealing. Or all of that at the same time. Or none of it and totally different. I'm pretty open to the (probably) dark future and thus not too inhibited by great ambition or the will to please. What artists do I like: Noé, Buñuel, Lang, Bergman, Keaton and stuff. Probably won't be too polished work, not enough patience for that. Will see. Most likely it will just be a lonely death for me without all the shebang beforehand.

Swanberg is one of those directors, you almost want to hate. When I heard about the mumblecore movement, I saw Big Puffy Chair first and really enjoyed the minimalism, then I heard about this Swanberg guy and what I heard made me roll my eyes, but when I watched Hannah Takes the Stairs, I had to tip my hat. Somehow he was able to recreate not just the scenarios of ambivalent heart break but also that pit in the stomach emotional loss behind it.

Primarily, I consider myself a writer, where I have had a few successes in the horror genre, with a couple contests.
I made one short film that I entered in a few festivals... Haven't heard anything yet.
With a little luck. and a lot of perseverance, I hope to be making indie horror and thriller features in the future.
In the meantime, I have a few ultra short films in preproduction.
If you're looking for some material, I have a few scripts I'm doing a final pass on.
Sorry... I just figured I'd put it out there.

I enjoy being a part of this community, and would love to hear more about the films you are creating and/or are wanting to create.
What do you think are your biggest obstacles to creating the content you want to be creating, if you aren't making it already?
I'll start - I started with documentary work for a non-profit, shooting on a canon t2i. After about 2 years of weddings I've wanted to move to bigger documentary projects and commercial work. My biggest struggle having not gone to film school has been connecting with other filmmakers to collaborate with, though i'm making more friends with each project I work on.

I went to film school, decades ago, but having been too young then, having had too many distractions and too little ambition, I dropped out. I kept film as a hobby, making wedding videos, test videos, nothing worth mentioning. Edited some music videos for local bands. Last week I gave my whole equipment to a friend, who is a better camera operator anyway. I am currently selling camera, lenses and other stuff on Ebay. The things you own end up owning you.
But I don't give up trying. I cut my expectations and my many projects down to manageable size. Let my friend worry about gear. Instead, I concentrate on scheduling the shoots. He is busy, so I have to prepare every project in such a way that 'principal photography' can be done on one weekend.
What kind of films? Short films, mostly one scene, one unheard-of event with two or three key moments. Emotions, action, humor and some sex. Hopefully enjoyable, entertaining, touching, intense and extraordinary.
Before there was the much-ignored subforum CREATIVITY AND IDEAS, someone founded CreativeCrit, another forum, where I posted three of my plans to let others comment. I still think this is a good idea, but the forum died for lack of interest. No one listens (good title) to your ideas. We must accept that.

Liam reacted to Sekhar in Shutter Speed NX1
Clearly, the guy had real low shutter angle, see the passing car at 0:12, there hardly any blur. These days, I'm regularly shooting at high shutter speeds with my NX1 myself and not bothering to stick to the hallowed 180 degrees. Two reasons:
You can get some amazing 8MP still frame grabs. I went to Costa Rica recently and some of most exciting stills of wild life I got were frames from video because you have so many to choose from with just the right timing and framing. I don't like using ND filters anymore. I have a pretty good variable ND filter (Tiffen 77mm), but it reduces the quality (especially adding flare) and is not the most convenient to use. Putting it on/off was not really an option in the Costa Rica rain forests (BTW, both my NX1 and 16-50 S lens took the rain well). Given the low angle footage, I'm experimenting with getting the blur. So far, I've found the pixel motion blur in AE to be quite good (you need to bump up the frame count though), but it is dog slow, so you'll need to add that to your workflow time. The ReelSmart motion blur is really fast (especially when using graphics card), but has artifacts (at least in my testing). If anyone else has suggestions, please share.

You know NX500 as a great little video camera that shares many of NX1's awesome qualities. What may not be obvious is that it can work as a great teleconverter. Using its APS-C sensor and 4K crop and placing its 4K footage onto a 1080p timeline, you can turn a 200 mm zoom into a 1,000+ mm ultra zoom (200 x 1.54 x 1.58 x 2.13 = 1,037 mm). I got an NX500 yesterday and thought I'd post some footage of birds on our street that I shot today with my Canon 70-200 L lens. Try it out if you have the NX500.

Not to mention prices on cameras. The latest and greatest people are talking about is $3000.
If one instead where to keep the current camera. That $3000 would give a K3 plus 40 rolls of bought, developed and scanned 16mm Kodak Vision. IF you buy them 4 at a time. Buy 40 at once and you get it much cheaper.
Then one can use the "old" camera for youtube,  gigs and what not. And shoot that special project, short film, sisters wedding or what have you on actual film.
That was atleast my thinking when the a7rii was announced. I thought "man $3000, I might as well start to shoot film". That also helped me to decide when needing a camcorder. No need for it to be cinematic or "film look". The film has plenty of that
I'm waiting on the first batch from the labb. After that there will be some videos including a guide on how to shot film for free, yes free.

Ok, so my adapters arrived in the mail this morning. First thing I noticed was how small they are compared to NEX and eos-m adapters... Obviously due to the flange distance, but that is a major plus for me. I like mirrorless cameras because they're small, but I also have only vintage lenses, so adapters are a must, but the adapter is usually so long that it makes the camera seem that much bigger. On the nx500, the adapters are half the size of the others.
I, pretty much, immediately took a drive out into the Pine Barrens to take some test shots. I brought my Canon FD 17mm and 28mm f2. And my Tokina 17mm and 25-50mm. And a Miranda 28mm f/2.8 macro m42 lens I also got in the mail today.
As soon as I got into the car, I threw the Tokina 17mm on and it looked nice.
When I got out to the Pine Barrens, I was blown away by the iq of the camera and these lenses. Even with everything dialed down the image was so sharp and contrasty, in a good way. I'll have to mess with some of the profiles to try and get the flattest image, but for the first time out, just messing around... I am pleased.
The crop factor is not bad at all and the movie standby mode is smooth, even going out of movie standby mode to use focus magnification and peaking is a breeze.
I did have a card error in my second recording that worried me, it basically would not let me do anything with movie recording, but when took out the card and turned the camera on and off as instructed, it worked fine the rest of the time without any hiccups.
When I got home, I tried converting the footage to prores, it worked fine in editready, but it was slow. About an hour and forty minutes to convert a half hours worth of footage.
When they were converted, they worked fine in QuickTime, but when I imported them into fcpx, I had nothing but a black screen. The inspector recognized them as 4K h.265 clips but not as prores... Not sure why.
Does anyone know the best workflow with these clips? I would rather down sample to 1080p and work in it there, but editready didn't give me an option to downsample, of course I very easily could have missed it.
I will try and upload some of the clips to Vimeo over the weekend.

The A7R II review will start with boxing footage... a good test for rolling shutter, motion cadence and whether the colour comes out as nice as the 1D C which I will bring with me as well!!
Then A7R II versus A7S in low light... this is one thing giving me pause for thought "shall I wait 6 months for the A7S II?"
Then versus 1D C shot A-B comparison, especially with regards to colour and what it is like to grade!
I think the 120fps mode should be interesting vs NX1 and GH4. RX10 II will probably beat it there.
Let's see if moire is a problem vs 1D C which is very clean.
And I also have the Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q to test the HDMI output. Wonder if it is better than the one on the A7S which had issues especially with S-LOG and the smudgy APS-C upscaling to 4K.

    Hello guys!
As promised here's a quick and dirty test of the various recording modes and picture profiles of the camera. Apologies for the quite crappy and changeable lighting conditions, i'll definitely do a better and more controlled test soon but at least it should give you some more indication about the camera performance..
Since it's quite a long video I put some chapters in the description so it's a bit easier to navigate :-)
I haven't yet had the chance of making a proper comparison with the α7S in terms of dynamic range but in my opinion it's very very close (which is quite a feat giving the resolution!). One thing is for sure, the base level of ISO800 for S-Log2 is so much easier and practical to work with than 3200! :-)
I've also shot some stills yesterday and I'm quite shocked by the insane amount of detail (and latitude) you get.. put that together with the ability to use a fully electronic shutter (that apparently for the first time ever has no penalties in terms of bit depth but i'm definitely gonna test that) and you get a timelapse dream camera! Let me know if you're interested in having a look at the RAW files and will upload some of them!
Thanks again for watching guys, let me know if there's something in particular you want tested and I'll do my best to do it! :-)

    Hello everybody!
Today I recorded a number of test scenes trying to cover as many of the video modes as possible (i've checked the different pictures profiles both in FF and S35 mode as well as the various 1080p speeds all the way up to 120fps).
I'm gonna try to put together a video tonight (there's a lot of material!) but for now i've uploaded two clips straight off the card for you guys to check, both 4K, same scene, one is in FF mode and the other one in S35.
    Settings as follows:
    - Slog2/Sgamut (detail -7)
    - ISO800 (minimum iso for Slog2 on the a7rII)
    - WB Cloudy
    - Sony/Zeiss FE4/16-35 @ 24mm/f8

ps. ignore the file date, i just realised i set the camera clock two days behind!!
here's the link to download the clips: http://we.tl/xNEDXe3WId

First impressions are generally positive: the camera feels very well in the hand (massive improvement over the a7s design) everything went smoothly, (although the software feels just a tiny bit slower than on the a7s but it's the first revision so it still might need to be polished a bit) the camera gets quite a bit warm during 4k recording but didn't have any problems (to be honest London is quite chilly at the moment which may helps!) :-)
Power consumption seems on par with the a7s, the EVF is wonderfully massive and bright, not a big fan of the new locking mode dial (you have to keep the centre button pressed to be able to turn it, i prefer the GH4 design where the dial can be left lock or unlocked)
In order to record 4K video you need a UHS Speed Class 3 SD card otherwise you get a warning on the LCD. (i've used a Transcend W95/R60 64gb and it recorded perfectly)
Last but certainly not least it is finally possible to assign the movie record to a custom button of your choice, REJOICE!!! :-)
Thanks for reading, have a good evening everybody!

If it's not your only camera, and it was such a good deal, 45mm equivalent could be really nice as your only lens on certain shoots if you like. Considering now I mostly use my 80mm equivalent, that lack of wide wide doesn't sound so bad anymore. Glad this camera is having a bit of a resurrection from when everyone was so mad about the crop at first
