  1. gotcha ! Looks like I'm gonna have to grab an a7sii to compliment my NX1 afterall ! I am really really waiting on those PL Mount SLR Magic Anamorphot lenses. Seems like they are taking forever but I want to try out a 2x anamorphic on a 16:9 sensor to get as panoramic of an image as possible...in 4k of course
  2. bro I heard of some wild deals on the internet like $600 for an nx1 body ! If you can find a deal by all means grab it ! Next thing you know Samsung releases a "We were just kidding about shutting down lol" press release and everyone is gonna grab the cam now that adobe supports h.265.
  3. that perspective is beautiful. Master composition for real
  4. hmmm so it's a go in terms of video with the Olympus camera's ? I'm currently shooting with the NX1 which I will reserve for paid gigs. I'm looking for something for quick turnarounds for personal projects and "shoot and burn" style work. I hear the Olympus allows immense customization of image I just want to shoot send to ipad edit there and upload to IG. A bloggers dream
  5. maybe a stupid question but would it be possible to use a 2x anamorphic on a 16:9 sensor to squeeze all that detail into an image and project it later as if it was shot on 65mm film ? I ask because I know today's sensors are high resolving and anamorphic lenses were once used to get widescreen out of 4:3 film.
  6. I think I get what you are saying. You are saying on the NX1 it will take an extremely high performing lens for you to see a difference in quality with your pictures because the camera is rendering a high quality image with any lens ? vs on full frame if a lens is low end the low end qualities will be more apparent ? Sorry for all the questions. I know on my a7s my FD's look better than on my nx1 in terms of character but on the nx1 they are way way sharper
  7. the first part is confusing. Are you saying its harder for a lens to keep up on an FF sensor than it is on a crop sensor ? Serious question, according to dxomark would you get a sonya7rii or a7sii ? I am on the fence about this as I am debating on which one to get if I were to get a full frame body
  8. can you really see such a difference in FF even with cheaper glass ?? What's the reasoning behind this ? I'm honestly not sure if dxomark is a great reflection of the camera's video performance since all these cameras output the equivalent of an 8mp image at max while the dxomark scores take in account the noise and color depth performance of their stills mode. For example the a7sii scores far less in iso performance than the a7rii http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-A7S-II-versus-Sony-A7R-II-versus-Samsung-NX1___1047_1035_976

    LOVE my Nikkor lens set
  10. first of all I wouldn't buy a samsung lens. Not cause they are bad but im investing in the body not the lenses in case they truly go belly up. Get you some m42 mount, canon fd or nikkor lenses. Whatever you can afford. As far as aesthetic it's a 1.53x crop super 35mm sensor. I personally love the look of Super 35 especially for video. As far as aesthetic you get the super 35 look with contrasty and decently saturated picture profiles. I can't really put in words what the difference in aesthetic are, I love the image from both the gh4 and NX and I don't think they are far apart in terms of dynamic range. My only issue with the gh4 when I owned it was the damn grain would be visible even at 400 iso which frustrated the hell out of me. 1600 on the gh4 was for when you had no other choice so you pray for the best. The NX1 I can use at 1600 with no degradation of quality. Honestly Ihaven't tested 3200 because I didn't need to I have lenses that hit f1.2. The h.265 codec holds a lot of detail but requires a faster computer to edit than the gh4 h.264 file. Adobe premiere supports it natively now so no need to transcode. The RAW stills of the NX1 are phenomenal and downscaled to 16-18 mp like the gh4 its blowing it out the water. It's a better camera for my personal use. If I were you I would keep my gh4 and wait for the gh5. I feel like they would announce it soon and im sure it's going to be a beast of a camera. Im waiting for the gh5 too to be honest. I recommend the NX1 but if I know how nerve wrecking it could be to jump to another system especially in light of Samsung shutting down rumors
  11. respectfully disagree. I own the NX1 and I adapt lenses to it and it prefers admirably in both stills and video. The lack of an anti aliasing works wonders for film era lenses. The nx1 is on par if not better than the gh4 in terms of video, the only difference will honestly be the aesthetic you prefer. It doesnt have the crazy amount of noise of the gh4 and is clean up to 1600. I would use the gh4 as a B camera and the NX1 as the main one.

THE lens set I am interested in right now is the PL mount SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x if the 2x comes out first I may just jump the gun and get the 35mm version ! I loved the anamorphic look but hated dual focus system
  13. nah the clipping in the Sony's look more extreme here's an example bro https://vimeo.com/107452261 thankfully a forum member said it can be cured with a white balance adjustment. Definitely considering a sony a7sii
  14. I don't use the smart range or any auto feature bro ! You should stay away from those on any camera. There's no free lunch if you gain something you sacrifice another. I dont use master pedestal because you are clipping data in the shadows but to our eyes it looks flatter. Big no no. I shoot with gamma dr with -10 sharpness or my vivid setting :-) hmmm you know what...i'll dedicate my next day of testing to the vivid setting to see if we can squeeze a lil more out of that profile. I'll let you know the results of course !
  15. finished reading the entire manga ! Waiting for them to catch up to the manga *sigh* :'(
  16. took you guys advice and played with the cineform codec and WOW. I've never seen filmconvert grain render soooo...naturally ! Do you guys have recommended export settings for cineform ? I see a yuv 10 bit option and an rgb 12 bit with alpha channel option
  17. jeeeesus Christ it sure was ! Now I just put the overexposure blinkie thingie on and expose just riiight before it starts blinking and I get a good dynamic range in gamma dr mode. Sidenote I think I can get a better quality file using the default picture styles. I figure if h.264 and h.265 codecs have troubles with low contrast why not make the image contrasty ? as you see here the nx cameras can recover the shadows and highs pretty well :-D
  18. Gamma DR at default settings except -10 sharpness. Worked out really well actually. Next test will be standard profile at default saturation & contrast and after that with reduced to saturation. This test showed me default saturation with gamma dr eliminated the banding in the skies (blue channel). The impulz Cineon conversion LUT really gave the image a nice base to start with pulling all the deep shadow detail and highlight detail into a usable range with its LOG conversion then James Miller set4 converted it from LOG to a beautiful rec709. my grading preference is faded shadows but I can assure you the waveform and vectorscopes showed true detail in the blacks. Next issue I need to tackle is the damn in camera sharpness. Im gonna take another shot at lens diffusion even though I didn't have much luck the last time. I used gaussian blur over filmconvert grain to try and blend the grain into the image to counter the cameras noise reduction and sharpening.
  19. nice ! Did you use LUTS on top of your gamma dr footage or is this just custom curves ? they need to give us the option to disable nr and sharpening in a firmware update. I have a feeling they won't because it will reveal the grain of their sensor and go against the clean & sharp aesthetic the camera is known for
  20. the heat issue is a real burden for a lot of companies and that really sucks. Kinda shows that 4k wont be widely adopted anytime soon hopefully sensor tech takes a huge leap and the heat issue no longer becomes a problem
  21. do you find that the image sees a reduction in quality above 1600 in 4k or 1080 ? I mean of course an image will degrade approaching 1600+ but I hear the NX1 get's terrible especially in 1080. The ONLY reason I'm considering getting a sony a7sii for certain low light situations
