  1. dude you are absolutely right ! I just did a rough test im seeing its a definite no no when it comes to touching the contrast slider ! I've settled on vivid with sharpness -10 and saturation down to -3. Doesn't blow the red channel and the saturation is still pretty uniform. It's vivid minus the chance of color clipping. I gotta see how well it holds up in the grade. This may be the end of LUTs for me, The Samsung colors with a little tweaking can be the next big thing. Modern day reversal film stock for sure
  2. yeah dude I wouldnt use the blue & orange look for anything else its too intense, used it to mirror a "common" look since everyone favors the m31 lut woah these look great ! Am I the only one that's noticing if you reduce contrast then you HAVE to reduce saturation as well ? Im still tweaking the picture profiles, namely the contrasty gamma c curve. For all these profiles I want the saturation low enough that red's and blues aren't rendering beyond the cameras color gamut where things start to clip in the color channels. Could be the source of all the banding in the sky ? So far it looks like we are making some progress with the vivid setting
  3. post a we transfer and i'll take a shot at it. For now ill grade the jpg
  4. I personally just use the impulz luts visionspace conversion if I want to "flatten" before grading. Im not sure how you can take 8 but footage and transform it into 10 bit LOG. Visionspace keeps it in rec709 color space
  5. I would just diiiiiiiiie All I want is a Canon 1dc body...kinda like how the nx1 looks and feels with the grip...a tiltable evf like the gx8, cinema dng for raw and h.264 or h.265 for compressed footage...with a samsung log, 4:2:2 internally better dynamic range and clean iso at least up to 3200. Super 35mm or full frame is fine with me, this would be my dream camera
  6. absolutely. I usually set the camera to aperture priority and set the minus exposure
  7. thanks dude ! The canon fd L series lenses are exceptional on this thing
  8. dope ! I started shooting with the normal gamma profiles, I shot some of these on vivid (namely the two shots with the old man) all at default settings except sharpness down to -10. I didn't use any diffusion filtration on these neither. I've noticed when you shoot flat on this camera that you can get some weird color banding and anomalies, but they do not present themselves often. Using the vision color impulz luts the LUT will pull down the bright highlights and shadows into an acceptable range even with a contrasty picture profile. There is a surprising amount of detail in the nx1 files, sometimes highlights could look blown but there is actually detail there. Shooting -0.3 to -0.6 exposure and I've got better results than with the gamma dr profile. Again the impulz lut's are a good start as they bring the highlights down and the saturation gets a non linear response like film (very saturated colors get reduced and undersaturated gets a slight boost) works really well with the nx1
  9. ??? definitely not dude. Color is subjective yes but color science is how each brand maps/optimizes the color output to suit their sensors. That's the short version
  10. how are the Ciecio's in comparison to Novoflex ? The Novoflex are ridiculously expensive compared to everything else but the Ciecio adapters look more high end ! Are the novoflex adapters a more precise design or something ?
  11. Hey if you like the aesthetic I say go for it !! I haven't used my a7s for extended periods of time like shooting 30min + clips....and I hear the a7rii overheats...so if you can confirm that it wont overheat I say do it

    Lenses

which adapter are you using ?novoflex ?
  13. im going to pay the ransom for a novoflex adapter because my fotodiox one for my fd lenses definitely focuses past infinity
  14. which one is that ? i need that physically controls aperture of the lens instead of something like the fotodiox that has some aperture insert thingie
  15. the canon fd L lenses are REALLY good, even my 35mm f2 ssc. Stopped down they are incredibly sharp, so much so I had to invest in new diffusion filters specifically to tackle edge sharpening because the NX1 (maybe its the lack of an anti aliasing filter) cuts straight through my pro mist diffusers ! Contrast is great and gives a filmic look but wide open they can be a bit challenging, I gotta be real careful shooting at f1.2. Still not sure if they resolve up to 6k wide open thats why im thinking of investing in some sigma art glass...still on the fence about that ! I'll probably upload something this weekend but im waiting on native support on adobe because I feel like transcoding is robbing us of the actual quality of the footage.
  16. i honestly dont care bro, brand loyalty is not something I care for. If canon came out with something dope in my budget tommorrow i'd jump ship. Samsung has a nice model camera and I love the aesthetic and what I can do with diffusion filtration on it. So I really dont care if 5 or 5 million people bought it I only care what I can do with it. so long story short : fuck the consumers view my work on vimeo.com/kidzrevil i bet my next check my canon t3i work looks better than whatever the fuck he's shooting with. People that hide behind brand names like this usually have sucky work. Wait till my NX1 footage goes up here
  17. I have come across a fotodiox ef mount adapter for the Samsung nx with declicked aperture control. I am interested in picking it up so I can invest in some sigma art glass ! Has anyone had any experience using these adapters that claim to have aperture control ? Is controlling the aperture via adapter going to give me as sharp of an image as if I were to stop down via lens ?
  18. absolutely. I denoise ALL my footage, it can be shot at iso 100 on an a7s and I will. When you run neat video it will show you it detects high to low frequency noise you can't see. Working in a 32bit color space(or max bit depth in adobe premiere) it blends pixels together to create "new" pixels. Also chrominance noise can be hard to detect with the naked eye but add a lut that dogs deep to pull up low levels of saturation and you'll see yup, there is noise ,!
  19. think you may be mistaken. Have you owned or shot with the NX1 ? Honest question. I have footage I shot with both the GH4 & A7S and they dont come close. They are very detailed but you have to understand the nx1 is 6.5k downscaled to 4k...that's no easy feat...its true resolution not digital sharpening. bro I've seen good narratives on an iPhone 6s and a Canon T3i. If you can't shoot a good narrative on a NX1 thats a personal issue lol. Any camera released at this point could do great work, what I look for more than anything in a camera is the aesthetic quality the lens/sensor combination gives you. Every sensor see's light different and the same goes for the lens...
  20. there's no technical way to do a creative grade...if the look you are going for is crushed blacks lifted to give a vintage "film" look then go for it. Expose bright or dark to display the textures YOU want to show. Uploading in 1080 will help though and investing in Neat Video helps with chrominance & luminance noise. good luck
  21. good point ! That would make sense as I have seen in an interview a samsung rep saying that you can play the nx1 h.265 files on their tv's. Could be why they chose h.265 & their vivid color science
  22. i seen Andrew Reid post on the Sony a7sii and he did not seem too happy with the new sunspot black hole errors in the camera. I mainly got rid of my a7s because the blue light clipping made shooting at night where there are a lot of neon signs in the city or even in concerts the blue channel clips and looks horrible. are these issues still present in the Sony a7sii ?
  23. thank you ! I added +5 contrast and -2 saturation and had good results. Honestly though I am staying away from gamma dr unless I can comfortably underexpose by 0.6. The highlight roll off is terrible but when you are able to capture them it's great. Sticking to standard with everything at default and -10 sharpness
