Don Kotlos got a reaction from WyattMaurer in Sony A7S II is out!
Tax?
A7s/ii is a run&gun type of camera aimed at both enthusiasts and professionals, whereas Ursa mini is more the workhorse type that is only for professionals. Don't let the prices confuse you, because when you add all the necessary equipment, they will not end up not only in the same price range but also not even close in the weight/size scale.
P.S. children idiots? Nice picture you have there

Sounds correct, unless there is a catch with the "full pixel readout".
It will be interesting to see why Sony decided not to advertize one of the most important improvements if it is indeed 8.3ms also in FF 4K mode.

I doubt slog3 is going to be better than slog2. If anything it will make it worse for skin colors since there are even less values assigned in mid gray level. Increasing the dynamic range with 8 bits is just not good for skin colors. I wish they had included 10 bits. But that might have been impossible with the current thermal envelope of these cameras.
Now, the only difference between this and A7rII for my use is the better high ISO sensitivity. Maybe the overheating too since I doubt they released a video centric camera with overheating problems.

Don Kotlos got a reaction from Gregormannschaft in Sony will shock everyone with their new creation!
You could consider BMPCC as consumer. But no other than that there is no cheap 10bit. Sony is capable of a camera like that and with the A7sii they have proved that they can really disrupt the market. My shocking reflects mostly my gear headed unreal expectations.

Massive resolution photos...which is a big bonus if you're looking for an all in one camera.

Don Kotlos got a reaction from neosushi in Premiere Pro now supports H.265
It is one thing to support a codec, and another to provide a smooth editing experience.
Hopefully with the proper hardware support transcoding will not be necessary.

I agree that methods like these are not good, but it was crapware that was intended to help the stability of the computer for novices. Thats why these were a problem with only the non-thinkpad series. Definetly not malware. Also Lenovo learned and stoped puting it in new computers.
Emanuel is right, fear is a bitch. Here's a hint to you - misinformation does not help.

Don Kotlos reacted to Triumph61 in Sony A7R II gets DxO marked
So I will use my focus peaking on the D810 to focus…..what no focus peaking? Ok I will magnify the image to focus…..Nope? OK so I will shoot at waist level to not attract attention to my filming……I can't? OK well at least I can use my Canon 50mm 1.2 on my D810 and some of my other legacy glass…..No again? Yep, that D810 is looking like a cracking competitive option to the Sony, OK OK I will at least have IS on all my lenses….Nope? 4k?….Nope…hmmmm, Log options? That D810 is looking like the obvious option :-)

Crop mode is better. The Chris has posted some examples in another thread:

Don Kotlos reacted to jax_rox in Sony USA Manager Mark Weir explains why the a7rII can’t do 10bit and why it has no flip screen.
The GH4 is much deeper and heftier (having used both cameras), doesn't have room taken up inside its body for IBIS, and it's sensor is less than half the size. If the Sony A7rII had a 4/3" sensor, I'm sure it would be a lot easier to implement more features - or at least keep it from overheating at 4k.
I actually don't care about what it technically has or doesn't have. I've used all the cameras mentioned here, and I can tell you that the Blackmagic is the worst of all of them for overheating.
I was forced to attempt to shoot a doco with the pocket as production wouldn't spring for anything else, and we needed a number of cameras. Apart from it being the totally wrong form factor for shooting when not on a tripod... The thing would heat up insanely.
So it is marginally bigger. I still don't really get this one - Sony made a design decision based on how big they want their screen to be, where they want it, and decided they didn't want even a small amount of extra bulk, or alternately even a small reduction in screen size.
I just don't understand how this is a 'big problem'. The screen tilts instead of flipping out - if that feature is THE killer feature you need to have, then this camera isn't for you..?
Except that's an amalgamation of features from a number of different camera companies. There isn't a single camera in even a similar price range that offers 10-bit 4k HDMI out, internal 4k 8-bit 4:2:0, Dual-pixel AF, super battery life, uncompressed raw stills, colour science as good as Canon (another thing I don't understand), on-sensor stabilisation as good as an Olympus and the ergonomics of a GH4 - all with a full frame sensor.
You can say 'I wish the IBIS was as good as Olympus,' you can say 'I wish the colour science was as great as Canon,' you can say 'I wish the battery life was better,' you can say 'I wish it had 10-bit.'
You can say all those things seperately. You can't say 'this camera is awful/nowhere near as good as it could be because Canon has better colour science, better AF, and better battery life, Olympus has better IBIS, the GH4 has 4k that doesn't overheat and the Blackmagic has internal 10-bit ProRes, so why is it that the Sony doesn't have every single one of these features??'
Especially when most of the cameras you're talking about have sensors that are less than half the size, in bodies that are just as big, if not bigger than that of the a7rII (with the exception of the Blackmagic - but again, its battery life is awful, heats up a lot, its sensor is tiny and it doesn't do 4k).
Are you seriously suggesting that there shouldn't be a camera on the market at the moment because none of them are perfect? Therefore, if a camera isn't perfect (or at least perfect to your specifications), then there's no point in making any cameras until it's physically possible to do so?
Or are you suggesting that Sony should make a camera that fulfills all your expectations and specifications, but is a big black box that doesn't have vast market appeal because it's ugly, big and heavy...?
It's funny how some people forget that camera manufacturers aren't making cameras specifically for YOU
I just looked on the Sony store website and the major features listed before internal 4k were:
-42.4 megapixel backlit sensor (keep in mind that the Sony website lists this as 'Digital E-mount 42.4 Mega Pixel Camera Body' rather than '4k internal Camera body')
-Fast Hybrid AF system with 399-point wide focal plane phase-detection AF coverage for sharp focus
-5-axis image stabilisation reduces blur for stills and movies - making every shot crystal clear
-Experience high sensitivity of up to ISO 102400*3 with low-noise performance and wide dynamic range
EVen on the Sony Digital Imagine global website, it lists these before internal 4k:
-New back-illuminated full-frame CMOS sensor
-High-speed BIONZ XTMimage processing engine
-All FE lenses maximize resolution
I appreciate for you that the headline feature may be internal 4k, but for Sony, it's big feature #5 in a long list. It's not all that long ago that Canon cameras crapped out in the same way simply recording HD. My T2i which was bought for the sole purpose of shooting video would overheat pretty easily. In certain conditions, it would start overheating before it reached it's 12 minute limit, especially if it had been on for a little while. That's HD! And everyone praised Canon for how great they were, and how great the video was, and how the overheating and time limit was annoying, but you could work around it and it was worth working around.
Now Sony brings out internal 4k with incredible quality, Slog in XAVC-s, coupled with everything else that this camera offers and it's some sort of travesty because under certain conditions, the camera sometimes overheats when shooting 4k.
Please.
Not that long ago, many people including myself were suggesting it was going to be unlikely that Sony would even have internal 4k in the first place in this camera.
If it's really that much of a killer, wait til the A7sII

Don Kotlos got a reaction from Marco Tecno in Did Samsung just kill the A7rii?
Just tried warp stabilization on Premiere. Just for the motion analysis it takes about 30' for a less than 2' 4k clip. That is with a 8 core overclocked to 4.5Ghz machine! Not that cores matter since it is not a multi threaded computation.
Now I agree with your point. I cannot imagine myself having to stabilize longer 4K footage.

Don Kotlos reacted to fuzzynormal in A7RII - E-M1 IBIS Test
I was skeptical of Olys 5-axis. Then I used it.
I can do stuff handheld with discipline that looks indistinguishable from a slider or something shot on a tripod.
Its creative freedom. And it's a tool that allows me to get shots really quick when run'n'gun'in'.
It's not perfect, but it is very useful for a certain style.
I do docu style, so it fits. I don't use it for EVERYTHING, but what I do use it for, it's pretty nice.
I sure as hell don't think that ANY camera I decide to use makes me in any way more accomplished of a shooter. I'm very camera agnostic. But I do like Oly's 5-axis feature. It's a fun tool to have. It's almost like cheating. It allows me to get that good framing easier...
Mind you, if you kinda stink as a shooter an EM5II isn't going to magically make you frame better compositions, but if you have some compositional skill, it'll let you grab those shots in a quick and practical way.

Same here. In the meantime, I've reluctantly become a little smitten with my EM5II. Once I learned the muscle memory for the egos it became a competent shooter. Not perfect, by any means, (no ISO exposure adjustment while shooting?) but a great creative tool if you wield it properly.
Also, I'm discovering that shooting EM5II footage with vintage lenses really takes the edge off the video and gives it a more pleasing aesthetic, so not only is the body pretty cheap, but the lenses I'm using with it and getting the best results are as well.

Maybe I should've left this alone,
right?

Pretty sure the Olympus stabilization is still unbeaten, so... that answers that for me.
Also, Gordon Laing actually confirmed my suspicion in a recent interview.
But yeah, without a definit answer, it's all just guesstimating.

It didn't even cross my mind to label the video. I said that it was late in the night...
But yeah left is E-M1 right is A7rII.

While a lot of folks will concentrate on IQ, color, DR, etc., and demand the best in that regard, I find that, for me, other features can be more practical for my productions. The built in Oly 5-axis has been really fun and rewarding to utilize.

Don Kotlos got a reaction from Inazuma in A7RII - E-M1 IBIS Test
Just received the A7rII.
Late in the night, I just mounted both cameras on the same plate with a heavy handle and did a quick & dirty IBIS test. I just moved around without trying to shake the cameras like crazy (ok maybe just a bit at some point ) . There might be some extra movement because of the stability of the rig with the cameras (but both cameras do physically move the same way).
Settings are as close as possible. 1/60 f/1.4 ISO 800 WB3100.
25mm T0.95 SLRMagic + Tiffen UC3 on E-M1, 50mm f/1.4 AIS Nikon on A7RII.
1080 30p Fine on E-M1, 4K FF 24p 100Mb/s on A7RII.
Simple premiere edit to make the composite. No effects applied. I wanted to also compare to the warp stabilized A7RII version but only analyzing the 1.5' 4K video would take more than 30' and I would fall asleep before it was done (I now appreciate NX1's DIS a bit more, since can't imagine how much time it would take to analyze a 30' recording).
Keep in mind that the DoF is different since I wanted to compare the same ISOs under shitty light. I might do another test in daylight and then the DoF will be controlled. Also the videos might seem unsynchronized but believe me they are. This is really the IBIS in action.
Hope it is useful for some of you...
