I had changed the picture quality on my parents' tv to a nice natural looking image. When they came back it was like 'ewwww! What's wrong with the tv?! It's like I'm watching the screen through a frosted milk bottle!'. They're so used to extreme bright, extreme contrast, supersaturated images always keeping things on factory settings, that they've got no idea they're watching eyestraining garbage. And I'm afraid it's a lost battle. Luckily then there's these kinds of initiatives that I hope can still make a difference.

Yeah, even VTech has 24p in the Kidizoom Duo 5.0... There's no real reason for a Canon camera not to have it, other than their ulterior motives. And they do the crippling by anything... framerates, extreme crops, no allowing dualpixel AF in certain resolutions and so on. And sure, doesn't every camera company leave certain specs to certain cameras? Sure. But not at the extreme level Canon is doing it. They just try to minimize their efforts and maximize the profits. Which is perhaps understandable in a black and white world focusing on just numbers. As a philosophy... long-term strategy and moral obligation... maybe not the best thing to do here. We've got Sony and Panasonic leading the way. Fujifilm and Nikon making some efforts even as well. That deserves a certain respect from me. Canon... deserves none. I mean, they just spit in your face and laugh at you. I ain't having any of that. The biggest joke ever was the step from the 650D to 700D. There was a dial that could now be turned both clock- and counterclockwise rather than in just one direction. Creative filters could now be previewed in liveview. And there was a different rubberized coating on there. Though, atleast I guess they didn't cripple it/left something out that was in there before back then. But that pretty much was it. Canon is the king of regurgitation. They might as well been Stevie Starr...

You damn right, they didn't. It was a deliberate act to cripple the camera as part of their increasingly aggressive segmentation game (forcing certain people looking for certain features to look at more expensive options; which is a very business oriented strategy which of course isn't a very good sign of goodwill and might alienate more people than it attracts). Which is a very reasonable and rational explanation. A much better one than including 24p because implementing so would make the camera too costly (again, we've seen cameras getting 24p added through a firmware update, long after it was sold to the customer!). The entry level Rebel T7 does 1080p24. You know which Canon camera does 4K24p? The Canon PowerShot SX740 HS, lol. A consumer budget compactcamera. So stop all this nonsense about costs or technical implementation, it's all bogus. They did it on purpose and it was not to cut down on costs of the camera itself, it was in the hopes that due to leaving it out it would generate more camera sales in higher tier products. Which is a shame, because no other camera company is leaving out something basic as 24p! Canon blew up after the 5DmkII and 550D/T2i. Then the whole Magic Lantern years trying to make them more into what Panasonic was doing as a company themselves with the GH-range, unlocking more potential, giving its users more quality and features. Yet Canon as a company? It's swinging that 'cripple hammer'. Why do you do it? What good have they really done after the 5DmkII? They started the whole HDSLR revolution if you will and now they're the ones least eager to keep up with it (it's like they managed to pull the Excalibur sword out... and then sold it for its precious metals). Just makes me puke. ?

Isn't that something Panasonic tvs have been claiming for a while (like 2016-ish) now with their HCX PRO Intelligent Processor and 'The Choice of Hollywood Professionals', 'Hollywood to your Home', 'Master HDR', 'Studio Master Pro', 'Experience the Filmmaker's Vision with the Hollywood Cinema Experience' and whatnot. Though, I guess that's mostly color, contrast and that sorta thing. I bought an LG OLED tv because everybody said it was the best of the best. I mean, it's much better than a Samsung or ALDI Medion tv or whatevz. But depending on time of the day and content I'm watching I continually have to change profiles and brightness which kinda gets annoying. Honestly, the ISF Expert and Technicolor profiles are so dark, even on the brightest setting in a fairly dim environment, that to me they are unusable (that one Game of Thrones-episode kind of bad). The whole thing is a bit cumbersome as well. You have make changes through somewhat complex menu structures that overlay. Dunno. Should be some ambient sensors measuring light intensity and color temperature of the room it's in and adjust itself accordingly, there's an 'auto' mode on the brightness, but it doesn't really work all that well I've found. It then should select a picture profile according the displayed content (sports, movie, etc). I'm not as blown away by the experience (I used to watch pretty much everything on my laptop or either go to the cinema). Was more blown away by my Chinese XGIMI projector. Guess size is still the greatest tool to immerse an audience. Audio is a great part of that too. For that I bought the Dolby Atmos LG SK10Y with SPK8-S, here as well... not really living up to the hype?

She agreed that she'll wait until I show her some better options in a store. I also offered to loan out a camera, but she's adamant on buying one from new somewhere. Consumerism.

That's just because of market dominance. The supply of mirrorless outweighs the traditional substantially these days, so it's only natural for people to get more into the mirrorless realm. DSLRs eventually will be a dying breed... and 'eventually' seems to be coming rather soon, isn't it. Seems like Sony has been done with them. Nikon might squeeze out another D5-like camera for the rugged pros at NASA or what not. Canon... might have the last one on their hands with the 90D. Pentax... well, they're quirky enough to continue in their niche corner or throw in the towel altogether already. There's no real new DSLR to suggest/get excited over. Now, my sister in law, she bought a Canon a while ago and more recently upgraded from that APS-C one to the 6D Mark II to do portrait/wedding photography. She has zero clue, skills (don't believe she even edits the photos) and imho zero vision (lighting, composition, timing), but somehow she's landing gigs because she has a professional looking Canon. My baby sister texted me today... she went to a Mediamarkt, a local generic electronics store (the European equivalent of Bestbuy perhaps?) and they recommended her to get the EOS M100 with two kit STM zooms and she's tempted by it. Like... I tell them to look past Canon, but they're brainwashed or something (she already asked 'Is Canon ultimately the best? Or doesn't it really matter?' and said 'ooh, and I think I would like one of those DSLR ones'). I mean... maybe Canon indeed is a nice point-n-shoot equivalent in the world of interchangeable lens cameras. But if quality and features are of any concern and you're willing to understand how a camera works and how to get the best out of it, then I'd have a closer look at Sony, Panasonic, Fujifilm, Olympus and Nikon which to me are obviously the greater value cameras here where better quality can be extracted from. Like... Canon has never even done a camera with sensor stabilization... then all the other lack of features and purposeful crippling going on. Basically it's the same old 550D/T2i shit without the stupid mirror and OVF. It's just disrespectful towards the consumer, because that is not at all what mirrorless is about. Mirrorless is so much more than just dropping the mirror... just not to Canon. So that alone is reason enough for me to give them the finger. But I also always say 'they wouldn't make a camera if they'd think they couldn't find anyone to buy it offa 'em'. So... well played I guess. But you'd think by now people would already know better, but they still don't. That makes me think that if they haven't by now... it will still take a long ass time for them to get WOKE.

Yeah, my friends used to call me 'Inspector Gadget' as I was really into tech, gadget, doing product reviews and what not (mostly good value Chinese brands). Then one time I decided to attend the Hong Kong Electronics Fair/Electronic Asia (previously only been to car shows, not a convention like this) and hop over the border at Lo Wu into Shenzhen, pretty but boy that wasn't the revelation I expected. Most of the original Chinese quality brands I'd come to know weren't represented and people never heard of. Instead it was shiny plastic fantastic underwhelment. That taught me to just stick to online resources. Much easier to weed out the silly schtuff and find the kind of stuff you're able to appreciate. Still though, if I'm not a total zombie I'll check it out. Might turn out to be fun.

I just pre-registered as visitor a little while ago now that I moved back to NL and it would be just around the corner (really think attending NAB would be dope one day; Photokina was always on my mind, but never got myself to actually go - atleast this one seemed feasible). Just, at the time I didn't know I'd have to be abroad for the majority of it. Nor did I have a real idea of what I'd be going to tbh. Just saw the Andy Serkis namedropping. Apparently they also have some eSport thingamajig going on. We'll see.

Yeah, I've watched some review videos back, believe they mentioned the GX80/85 has a 1.1x crop and the GX9 1.26x. Not extremely bothered by it myself. I occassionally use the Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 for landscapes and otherwise throw the Laowa 7.5mm f/2 in the bag, but generally I tend to lean more towards 35-85mm equiv.

Everyone was disappointed with it, since it wasn't really much of a successor to the GX8. But... it looks like a nice little update from the GX80/85. Not massive, but now enticing enough now to do so perhaps. Or just if you didn't have a 2nd body to begin with.

Not quite yet though. Sheeple still buy them. Even after asking me for my expert opinion, because ultimately they've always only known this iconic 'Canon' so for them it feels like a 'safe bet' and your typical electronics market dweep will also recommend it since he doesn't know any better either. It's gonna take a while before that's eradicated. They'll even pick a traditional DSLR because that's always been regarded 'the professional' thing, even when I tell 'em about the benefits of a mirrorless camera. It's a deeply rooted evil they're still picking the fruits from. But yeah, at some point the well has to dry out, but... it will rather be later than sooner I'm afraid.

The Olympus E-M1 at launch only did 30p. You know what they did years later? Firmware update release notes: That's a camera that had already long been sold by then. You really think they paid 5 million bucks after the fact just to please some beggars?
