Christina Ava got a reaction from JazzBox in Learning how to walk :)
i am one of the biggest lovers of handheld and one of the worst shakiest camera women out there.
my advice
1. gym, no way to do handheld if you have chicken wings for biceps
2.try to walk with your knees bended a bit difficult but works (think of your knees as car suspensions keep them bended)
3.if you go completely handheld (no monopod) then control the shake by actually enhancing it in a rythm up and down
4.use the camera strap on your neck as balance and extend it with the camera
5. use a pillow, crazy but works if you have nothing, just strap a pillow in your chest and rest your elbows on it.. (Chris Doyle dp )
6. in general use your elbows against your chest
7. breathe right relax go with the flow, sing a tune in your head to find rhythm

Christina Ava reacted to andy lee in Tiffen Ultra / Low Contrast filters
you can get this lower contrast look by just stretching nylon stockings over the back of your lens... its cheap and works !!- they have been doing this in Hollywood for many many years since the 1930's - it works!!
just watch Atonement by Seamus McGarvey 2007 shot with nylons on the back of the lens
read this in American Cinematographer magazine about how he did it
http://www.theasc.com/ac_magazine/December2007/Atonement/page1.php
Atonement, shot by Seamus McGarvey, BSC, lends stunning visuals to a novel’s impact.
To further emphasize the heat, the cinematographer shot most of the 1935 scenes with a 10-denier Christian Dior black stocking on the back of the lens. The only time the filtration came off, he explains, was “when we were shooting against very bright windows. It would bloom out too much and the areas of overexposure would start to corrupt the shadow areas. For those odd shots, I used Schneider Classic Softs — 1â„8, 1â„4 or 1â„2.†While praising the stockings’ effect, McGarvey’s 1st AC, Carlos De Carvalho, notes that the material “reacts very differently if you have a lot of stop on the lens, so [McGarvey] kept things pretty much wide open, which made it more challenging for me — more exciting, actually!†Easing the damage to De Carvalho’s nerves, Panavision supplied a complement of RF (rear filter) lenses, with the exception of the 40mm prime. De Carvalho explains, “The lenses have a little screw-on adapter on the back, which allowed me to pre-net all of the lenses and have a separate ring for each lens. The longer the lens, the more you have to stretch the stockings, so we had to be careful to mark them all. But it allowed us to take the stockings off or put them back on quickly.â€

Christina Ava reacted to pablogrollan in Will Canon EVER respond to competitors?
It seems we'll know soon enough is Canon is ready to respond.
http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/07/canon-to-make-a-big-splash-at-photokina-cr2/
Depending on whether or not the announcements are a disappointment and if that new sensor tech is really "revolutionary" we may see Canon repeating the cycle again... or not.

Christina Ava reacted to sunyata in The Economist talks mirrorless cameras
Well, I do with stills but just for personal use, and I develop my own E-6 and scan it, it's just a hobby. Cibachrome is dead now, the chemicals are too old, even if you can find them, so that's another issue with the end chemical printing format dying. Deluxe closed it's Hollywood lab in March of this year, and although people can still make prints, that's a clear sign of things to come. Avatar effectively killed film projection when all the theaters had to upgrade to digital to show 3D (Even the historic local theaters like the "Bruin" in Westwood are proudly digital now). But TV shows like American Horror Story are still shot on film - mastered to 2k and you can still benefit from the look of film, even seeing it through a digital medium, that doesn't exactly convert it to be the same as digital native.
There is a tribe of younger cult-movie vegans in Los Angeles that are desperately trying to find

I'm with you on that.. I miss working with Cineon scans, it was well documented, standardized, looked great even at 2k. You should read this:
http://jamesriverfilm.wordpress.com/2012/10/25/the-true-cost-of-filmmaking-in-the-21st-century/
I'm watching on an Epson HD projector a Jean Rollin film, with horrible effects.. bad acting, gratuitous nudity, of course it looks awesome. It was shot on location somewhere in the french countryside, early 70's. Could I watch a movie this bad if it was shot on a GH4? I probably would have stopped after around 15-30 seconds. (He's got serious focus pulling issues btw, but it makes no difference)
The other issue is digital projection. If you love film, you're going to have a hard time finding a theater that will project light through it. We're basically watching high quality TV in theaters now.
From the article:
“Here’s a surprising fact that independent producers may want to consider before they write off film as “too expensiveâ€: There were 120 films in competition at Sundance this year. Based on our research and conversations with Kodak and Fuji only 5% were shot on film… and yet that small minority took 100% of the most coveted Jury and Grand Jury prizes in the US and World Dramatic competitions, as well as winning the Excellence in Cinematography Award in the US Dramatic category. It’s true that producers of sub-$1M independent film need to watch the bottom line… but isn’t the ultimate goal to win awards and thereby sell the movie?â€
Maybe at some point in the future though, someone will invent an affordable chip with a 3-layer process, flaws and all, with natural grain.. then this argument will probably be over.

innovation? i just shot a wedding in film, an old rolleiflex and a leica, saw some of the photos and in terms of quality and beauty there is nothing that will ever overshadow film photography.
mirrorless photography is a step back in photo-quality. dslrs are not that good, m43 are mediocre to say the least.
i think we have forgotten what quality in photography actually is.
check this guys film wedding photography,

no amount of filters and photoshop will ever reach the feeling of film, digital photography will always hit a ceiling, as it lacks the organic.

Christina Ava reacted to leeys in Gopro 4 coming when the summer is over?
The 3+ was announced in October last year, so not surprised they'll do it again this year. I agree the timing could be better...

Christina Ava reacted to fuzzynormal in Gopro 4 coming when the summer is over?
Indeed. I just finished a production for a client who entertained the notion that his quad flying shots were appropriate for his film. It was incredibly difficult to diplomatically try to inform him how to fly his toy.
Ultimately, he just liked to fly the damn thing high to the point where the landscape basically looked nondescript/static and then he would just pan and tilt the camera around randomly. Augh.
Some people would rather hang a painting of Kincaid in the house than a Wyeth.
I just had to accept it. Lots of folks just don't get it. Their subjectivity skews toward tacky. With flying shots it's typically low, slow, and in a straight line. It's really that simple.

Christina Ava got a reaction from Inazuma in Gopro 4 coming when the summer is over?
Dear fellows,
i have been holding on from buying the gopro hero 3+ because there has been this rumour that a gopro4 with improved 4k in terms of fps and other tweeks would come out in summer 2014.
where is it? you think they will release it in september? i mean this is the perfect summer sports/vacation camera,
why delay it..
by the way just watched the bloom new drone+gorpo 3 film.... perfect combo, and look at the use of the low flying drone..much more dramatic than the high altitude shots that i personaly find boring.http://vimeo.com/99762227
and just found the perfect accesory for those of you that have kids!

Christina Ava reacted to Andrew Reid in B&H to sponsor EOSHD reviews and gear store - also C300, 1D C drop $2000, replacements coming?
View the price drop on the C300 at B&H here
View the price drop on the 1D C at B&H here
C300 and 1D C drop $2000
This is an interesting move by Canon. The 1D C I expected really to drop further in price because of intense competition from Panasonic and Sony at much lower prices. The C300 however has been selling very well but now apparently Canon want to shift stock faster. Is this to make way for a replacement? Based on specs alone it is certainly due one. Based on the real world and how this camera has been accepted by videographers and filmmakers, people seem pretty happy with what they have!
