IronFilm got a reaction from JR Lipartito in Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
I think all the top of the line mirrorless/video cameras (of which the GH4 was surely one of those!) can now produce very fine images, as Tom Antos made that point recently in his 4K camera test for end of 2016:

Thus while moving image quality forward is indeed important, what matters even more is improving the existing functionality of the current camera and not having any stupid problems with them (hello Sony a6300... or hello Canon 5D mk4!!!). Which adding: 4K slow motion, 4K 30p 10bit 422, waveforms, vectorscopes, better EVF, full size HDMI, better XLR accessory, and much much more.... is what the GH5 does *right*!! :-)

No offense to the other Panasonic ambassadors but someone at Panasonic was very smart to get Luke involved.

My money is on the GH5 being better than a Canon 5D mk3 in lowlight.
People for ages loved the lowlight capabilities of the Canon 5D mk3 and raved on about how important a so called "full frame" sensor is for that "lowlight ability". And the Panasonic GH5 will exceed that. It is the natural result of the forward march of technological progress.
Hopefully time will tell that Panasonic & Olympus made the smart move, with technology catching up to "full frame" level performance then everyone who wants a compact or lightweight system will go with Micro Four Thirds.
While those who want the "ultimate" will go with digital medium format instead such as Pentax 645Z or the new FujiFilm mirrorless medium format camera. (Especially as the relentless forward march of progress while within a few short years make digital medium format cheaper and cheaper, until even semi serious hobbyists will find it affordable at a stretch)

HA! Panasonic cameras have never had overheating issues :-D

    You don't spell Panasonic's name "S-o-n-y" or "C-a-n-o-n"! ;-)

Not really. If anything, they've provided us with options like no other. They're all somewhat close, yet different. (GH2, GX7, GH3,) GH4, G7, GX80, GX8, G80, GH5. Which other brand does that? The NX1 and NX500 were rather different. The A5100 has no successor, the A6300 was followed up by its direct successor the A6500. X-T2 is the first real endavour of Fujifilm is this direction. Think the gap between the G80 and GH5 sorta makes sense. There's a lot of people who want a flagship camera but do not necessarily need all the advanced video features of the GH-line. Well, that's exactly what the G80 already is, a hybrid flagship. They didn't leave out a mic-in and Cinelike profiles like on the GX80, there's some clear difference in positioning and price. The GH5 takes up a lot of research development and it sorta benefits from having some of the features 'tested'/getting implemented first on the more entry level models. All these things we ask of it to do... it costs money. Sure, like V-LOG L you could opt for a model that lets you unlock all the individual strengths it has. Maybe you don't need V-LOG L, or an anamorphic mode or slow motion and then you buy the camera for 1499 and have to pay for the individual upgrades. But before you do that kind of market survey to estimate where you'd be grossing out, you might as well make the camera that does it all and sell it for the price it needs to be.
Where I do see a gap in the market... something like the BMPCC. A handheld, portable cinema shooter that does RAW DNG/ProRes. Because if you want to shoot like an ARRI/RED/BMD/Kinefinity/Sony, cinema style... or the Varicam even... the proper cameras are either too bulky or unreachable for us peasants. The BMPCC really changed that. Especially when it was on sale for 475 EUR (I remember everybody was like 'oh! Must mean a v2.0 will be released soon, I'll wait for that one!). So... speaking of a gap... if either Blackmagic Design or Panasonic would step it up with a RAW DNG/ProRes shooter at say 2499... That would be sick! The Craft cinema camera comes to mind. That was a good concept. Then again, that was about the only thing it was. xD If you add everything to a full BM46 or Kinefinity Terra, it's not that cheap either. Craft had worked out all the modules together would be $2,894. That would be quite a nice level up from a GH camera. Hope someone will offer something like it. Not a crazy fan of the BMD Production Camera, but that's about the only thing in the ballpark.

Wow that's Canon logic, upgrade the camera to 10 bit 422 to improve vlog quality and then don't include vlog. Panasonic, sort it out, this is your top of the range camera, both Canon and Sony have log in cheaper models. This is a mistake on your part.

    Hi.
Make sure you have the latest firmware.  BM often incrementally tweak things "look wise" along the way without being great at documenting it.  If you're shooting RAW, the same applies with Resolve. Go for the latest rev.

There was a channel that would make slight variations to colors and upload videos of fake comparison videos such as "A7s vs GH4" weeks before the A7s prototypes were getting in the hands of journalists.  And since they were the first channel to post comparison videos with the highest view count, they would be the top video for that search engine for months.  That channel was especially disgusting because no one would check the fine line to realize the video was fake.  I'm sure most people here would see the video was fake right away but for most people who don't have that kind of acuity, they were probably basing their purchase decisions based on these videos.  I'm glad to see that channel is gone.  Probably what got them was they would rip videos from Nikon's official channel and reupload them.

I average $1 per 1000 views and have yet to earn $250 in two years lol. It is good to be monetised, though, just in case you film something extraordinary that gets a few hundred million views in a short time whereby advertisers fall over themselves to pay the top rate for a few months.
My biggest gripe are the spammy companies offering to license your video and offer you 60% - how generous of them.
To be a top earner on YouTube you generally have to appeal to the lowest common denominator; which is to have wild hair, a whacky disposition, be stunningly good looking, have a knack for tapping into the brains of the near dead, master the art of false humility and get people to feel sorry for you, be a big fat show off or any combination of those listed. There are many seriously talented folk on YouTube who get nowhere in terms of hitting a million subscribers (or even a thousand in many cases) but then that is not why they are there in the first place.
Philip Bloom has around 125,000 subscribers
Casey Neistat has around 6,125,000 subscribers
That tells you all you need to know about this world.

Well I would imagine in a few more generations someone, probably will be Sony, will make a consumer camera that IS almost what everyone here pleads to have.
The A7sII is really not that far off in reality. Build one with a S35 sensor, 6k, internal ND filter, better codec, little bigger body for a larger battery, and sensor cooling ability. They could have done  some of that with the A6500, but I think they wanted to save that for the A7 series.
We really are getting close to the real deal if only they would stop worrying about loosing sales on their top end stuff. Seems to me they would sell more of them at 3k dollars than the few they sell at 10k dollars. No one is ever going to give up on buying a real full size camcorder for serious work. so they will still have a base for that category of bodies.

You just need the right adapter, with the Metabeans Speed Roaster your GH5 can do an espresso just fine!
Just make sure your sensor gets really hot!

I'm actually all for biological cameras. That will crossbreed and evolve into new species. Or atleast mechanical ones that have 3D print functionality and instead of firmware updates, they actually upgrade themselves on a physical/mechanical level. And have one of them StarTrek replicators in the future. I have to agree, serving beverages would be utterly convenient.

Is it really so much for us to ask for it to have a coffeemaker built in, though? I mean we've got IBIS now, so caffeine jitters won't be an issue. This is obviously the next logical step here.

Fat cat laws on the definition of a camcorder. When Brexit happens in about 100 years, things will change on that front.

Can't figure Why the M43 makers don't concentrate on Faster Lenses. Like maybe a few f1.8 zooms or f.95 primes
Even if it means collaborating with Voigtlander or Sigma. Leica is great but their prices aren't.

Yea, a super FS5 is more of what I was picturing- still m4/3, real video camera shape, but very small for such, and bigger than the GHs... just big enough to have real controls, ergos, XLR, ND, etc. Although then you're not a whole lot bigger than the GH5 with the XLR box, so maybe it's just not worth it at that point. And the GH5/XLR combo is pretty similar to the C100 shape and layout. Just needs a rotating grip and a tilting EVF.

There are some examples of the hacked NX at the NX sub-forum. Even Samsung's early (and rather "weak") H265 implementation, is great for live performances and other byte consuming jobs.
There is always the option of 160/180 even more, Mbps which grades better and holds more information. The codec is not that great though, because Samsung probably used a very basic one (do not forget that was back in 2014).
In anyway, H265 will be the future for the next multiple K generations (I think it supports up to 8K?) and that's it was created by the same H264 consortium.

I am glad that's been cleared up. Thought for a moment we might be heading for a ten page debate similar to the senor crop factor / light gathering fiasco from last year.
This is the most excited I have been about a camera that I have no intention of buying since first taking an interest in video three years ago. The GH5 was on my immediate radar before settling for the a7sii and I might well have bought it had it arrived a year earlier, or a large sum of money I was owed had arrived a year late.
I like Panasonic and hope that the GH5 is a huge success for the company and for those who buy it.
Certainly, 4k 60p will become the standard for prosumer cameras from now on and I expect that the a7riii and a7siii will both need it in order for Sony to remain on the same pitch.

Biggest thing I could hope for from Panny on the GH5 is if they move to the newer H.265 format. That would really free up space for a looser, better Codec.

Wait hold on folks, I apologize I am totally wrong on the bit size increase!
I just cleared up my brain fog!
Of course, while the information quadrupled the required space is only 10/8 more, a factor of 1.25!

Maybe I am wrong in absolute data increase cause I don't really know what exactly goes into describing each pixel but certainly 10 bit value doesn't take four times as much storage as 8 bit value. Computer memory is measured in bytes, each consisting of 8 bits. You can read the whole value as well as specific bits, so to store a 10 bit value, you'd use a byte plus 2 bits of another byte, still having 6 bits of that byte available for the next value (of course, you have to keep track of where your bits are as there is no address in the computer memory for separate bits, only bytes). At most, if you just leave a full byte for the extra 2 bits, it will still take only the double of amount.

Agreed, I'm curious too. The GH4 has always had a very filmic motion cadence in 24p 4K if you ask me, and I've been crew and DIT on productions with Alexas and C300.
