  1. Nice idea, but on the surface I think there’s better options now and most likely in the very near future. It will have to sport a remarkable picture to be competitive.

Well done to Sigma though for getting their fingers into the camera side.

Panasonic Japan helped me out with a key, so I was not a "normal customer" in this regard. The packet they send out is same process as GH5 + V-LOG upgrade. I am sure it will arrive promptly in a lot less than 28 days but an AppStore with instant delivery would have been far preferable in my view.

That £2349 is a bargain but yes it's grey import from HK I believe.

Bummer that it’s a physical thing. Is this an anti-piracy tactic?

I just don’t get the logic of providing this non-digital - surely it costs more to print them all up and post them?

Yep, bargain grey import indeed - still worth it if you’re not VAT registered. They are legit as I’ve had a few lenses from them.

Today the Panasonic S1 gets the new V1.2 firmware update which brings the capability to unlock the catchily dubbed DMW-SFU2 upgrade capabilities. Full V-LOG (not "L"), Cinema VariCam colour science (V-Gamut) and 10bit codec upgrade to 4K 4:2:2 150Mbit are the main features.

As well as that there's LUT support in camera, high res 24bit audio and other exciting improvements.

    Awesome.

This website is selling the S1 + 24-105mm for £2349.00

    Temptation....

Looks like IBIS will be available in the S1H after all according to Alicia Robbins. Or at least it was available in the version she used to shoot the demo video.

Well this camera has become even more interesting. I do kinda fear that it may put my EVA1 in the dust bin though!

    I win!

    4K for £135

But this got me thinking as well... What if we have a fun "EOSHD Challenge" where we all trawl the bargain bins in our local towns and online, pick something for super cheap, could be $50, $100, no more than $150...

    Make a video with it.

Then the winner is judged in a poll - on artistic merit, and technical image quality (can be 1080p of course)

The winner, wins the camera of the last place guy ?

Plus a special bonus camera from EOSHD.

What do you think? Worth setting up a challenge like this?

    Sounds good @Andrew Reid.

If you go ahead with it, I would also provide a "manifesto" of rules... so it evens the playing field. Some of us might of access to helicopters, whereas offers may only have a plastic straw for a tripod. It would be great if we were forced into "bare bones" shooting and using DIY methods.

  6. I'd advocate Canon for stills. Even when my wife had a 700d, her images smoked my Sony A6/A7 whatever just from pure image rendering. nearly every photographer I work with uses Canon.

For video though, even though they have a few of industry leading features (reliability, DPAF, colour) - they've fallen way out of favour in the UK. Nearly everyone in the low and mid tier are shooting on Sony or Panasonic. Some Blackmagic. My local rental house has had to sell on their C300 II's because no one wants them.

This is all because, and you can't deny it, that their video pipeline is an absolute mess. From the C700 bazooka to the immensely crippled EOS R - barley anyone wants them for video here because they lack features that Canon could easily include. They could wipe the floor in the sub-£10k market if they gave the C200 a 10bit (non-RAW) codec and better 120fps. But that camera has a major split personality and it puts potential buyers off (like me, who went for the EVA1 instead).

Additionally, as most professionals own A,B and C cameras - their video lineup is a mess here too. Panasonic lead the way here and this to me is a huge selling point.

There's no doubt you can create stunning images with whatever Canon - but their decisions in video features have had a severe impact on their universal attraction (for video in the UK).

To the point of the post, they are SO frustrating because we all have a soft spot for them, and want them to deliver what we want. But they won't, and probably never will.

  7. Well, Panasonic delivered some beasts and a lot of the internet are still complaining. Then there’s a guy on here saying the GH5 is outdated. What a strange world.

As a Panasonic shooter, the S1 is looking tasty - too early to call on the S1H.

Wish all these brand new lenses were more affordable though - the premium has certainly increased over the last few years.

2 plus years since the GH5 was released and you think it's coming out soon? That's fan boy talk all the way.

Why does the GH5 upset you so much? Did someone throw one at you? I’d understand if that was the case.

But think of it this way, both Panasonic and Blackmagic offer the market products much different to others. We all win. Hooray!

    P.s I think I might get an S1.

The P4K beats the GH5 all day long for $1,295

No one has beat the GH5 except the Z6, S1 and these are FF cameras. Who was suppose to beat the m4/3 GH5? The only other m4/3 company beat them. All other were FF cameras or getting into FF.

Camera companies stick to the $1,000, $1,500 and $2,000 price points year after year and decade after decade. And in the GH5 all your talking is specs only. The 4K 60p  on the Gh5 is not great compared too cine cameras or the P4K?  It seems people get caught up in the "I spent $2,000 and got 4K 60p " and expect that to be good 4K 60p .

If it was really good 4K 60p then no need for the S1 or S1H. The 4K 60p out of the S1H will be cine quality and is truly bridging the gap.

There are other reasons why someone would want a GH5 over a P4K.

IBIS, flippy screen, higher frame rates, longer battery life, stills, reliability, smaller and lighter... and it’s these reasons why I shoot with one as opposed to a P4k. Not everything is purely down to image quality. Versatility is important for a lot of people.

Can’t you just accept that the GH5 is the best camera for some people, are for others it’s not? No need to waffle about it.

What I find astonishing is that it hasn’t been beaten in its category until, well, Panasonic S1 series release.

I really hope Panasonic recognizes the potential and the expectations of the GH6 and rises to the challenge.

I’m expecting it will have 4k120fps in H265 and possibly external ProRes RAW up to 4k60p. Apart from an ND filter, I can’t really think of anything else it could realistically have.

    46 minutes ago, newfoundmass said:

But yeah, in 2019, it's still a world class camera. Feature for feature there still isn't anyone that matches it outside of Panasonic itself. I think $1499 is a fair price for it new today. I know I've been looking at selling my G85 to pick up another one, though probably used since you can get an even better value there (often with v-log unlocked.) That people are saying it was overpriced on release is just nutty to me.

I think the GH5 is the best video camera you can buy today, if we’re talking price / performance ratio. Still hasn’t been beaten after 3 years.

I would have agreed with you, if they didn’t release the GH5s... anything over $2000 with a m4/3 sensor is pushing the market limits IMO. And since Fuji released a S35 camera for $600 cheaper only a year later proves that... again IMO.

I think the XH-2 will be their video blockbuster, and I guess they’re taking their time to get it right. If it is what we’re expecting, they can take my money.

  11. Came across this very cool looking “video game”  called Cine Tracer which allows you to play cinematographer and use the built in tools to create pre-visualisations for your films. Lighting, compositions, sets, actors... all that stuff.

I’ve not used it but I could imagine it has great potential.

    Anyone had a go?

Do you think it could be a useful tool?

    A sign of the future?

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/904960/Cine_Tracer/

  12. You also left out higher frame rates, which for many types of work is massively important.

What I would really benefit from is fantastic 120fps capture (we’re not counting RED, Mavo etc in this) - without the annoyances of noise, aliasing, fuzzy details, lower than perceived resolution, colour weirdness and low bit rates / bit depth.

I can do it on the EVA1 in 10bit but it’s difficult to use. Noise is hard to manage and if your lens isn’t absolutely extremely pin sharp, the images will be soft and fuzzy.

The E2 has the best 120fps in its class - I just wish the other mirrorless cameras had it at this level and the FS7 / EVA1 class had better versions.

  13. There seem to be a few people happy with the EOS R, but there's no denying for most people it's absolutely rock bottom for mirrorless video (like all their other DSLR / DSLM) cameras when it comes to video. Even Fuji are miles ahead for video capture now. The frustration targeted at Canon is there for good reason., however it's best to forget about it.

There's also a lot of talk about autofocus. Rightly so, this is absolutely fantastic for solo gimbal and I'd love to have PDAF in the GH5. Not having PDAF doesn't stop me shooting. However, A LOT of people have got really, really obsessed with it as if they've forgot to use manual focus (which I use 99% of the time). Manual lenses are way more fun!

There's also a hell of a lot of bashing about the S1 cameras due to unrealistic expectations (requests for internal BRAW etc, what?). For video, there's literally nothing else like it and people are still complaining?

We're spoilt for choice these days and there's something for everyone. Enjoy it!

This looks like a pretty legitimate article... so the "game changer", the "cinema dream" is 6k @ 24 fps? A feature no one was asking for?

No flip screen, no PDAF and no built in ND? Disappointing. I think Panasonic will remain a distant last place sales wise. No one had a problem with the image quality of the S1. Personally, I really like the image of the S1. What the majority of people had a problem with was the contrast detect AF and the lack of a flip screen. Built in ND, while nice to have, was never expected on a hybrid... so it didn't lose points for lacking it. Leaving out the two most requested features is a huge disappointment... again!

Oh well, nothing to see folks, just a more usable 6k photo mode... that no one asked for.

That press text doesn't tell us everything, like no mention of external recording options.

The big bit I did notice is full frame 4k60p at 10bit. No other full frame mirrorless does that. I hope it's true.

If the 4k60p bit is the only significant difference, then the S1 could be the bargain of the year!

The price of the S1H will be the deal breaker - please don't be "much more" than the S1R!

  15. From what we think we know from the rumours, so far it only seems like 6k and Vlog is included over the S1.

I’ll predict the difference will be external ProRes RAW recording up to 4k60p.

The 6k will be the marketing headline grabbing “world first” that Panasonic always do (for a full frame mirrorless).

This new thread is here because the other thread is apparently wrong. The new camera is NOT FULL FRAME... it’s APS-C

    Now things are getting interesting.

    Specs:

    Name: Panasonic Lumix V1

    24MP APS-C sensor

    L-mount

    Internal: 6K 10bit 30p, 4K 10bit 60p, 2K 10bit 60p, 2K 8bit 120p

    External via SDI: 6K 12bit 60p, 4K 12bit 120p, 2K 12bit 240p

    14bit RAW Photos

    12fps shutter

    All-I & LongGOP compression

    Prores & Prores RAW compression

This has to be fake. I’d be very surprised if it isn’t.

There's an awful lot of people that rely on Lumix cameras for their professional video work and businesses, so I'd have to disagree.

"Serious video work" shouldn't be based on the size or scope of the work. Certainly wedding filmmakers are doing serious video work? Or the indie filmmakers that shoot their films with Lumix cams.

    You’re right.

I know countless people using the GH5 for serious video work. I’m one of them and everybody is fine with it, and never questions it. I use it alongside the EVA1 and the GH5 performs brilliantly, every time.

Hope they don't leave out IBIS like they did with the GH5S.

I hope they have 2 models - one with IBIS and one without (this would appease everyone).

Or they do have IBIS but have an IBIS lock mechanism.

I know people bang on about IBIS rather obsessively, but theres a good reason for it. It's absolutely liberating.

  19. It's a bit confusing where this will fit.

The EVA1 is the sub-10k flagship.

The S1 is a photography camera BUT they want to appease video shooters too.

I assume the GH6 is on the way at some point in the next year and a half, which will have to boast amazing video features to appeal.

So Cinema LUMIX? Couldn't even guess what it will be like considering the other models. Probably an S1-C with external ProRes RAW or something.

  20. Is there any way to adjust the color of the display?

I've got one and the color is quite a lot warmer than what the camera LCD is seeing. Also the highlights seem a lot brighter and steeper than the camera monitor, makes it hard to judge the image.

Shot externally with an Atomos in HLG 10bit mode (higher bitrate than internal)

Looks pretty good to me, and a hint of what the internal codec upgrade will look like.

I also feel for a promo film it's above average, a very simple story but effective. A bit sentimental of course, and not perfect attention to detail in some shots, but it works.

I hope one day when I hear a piece of music it will remind me of the Panasonic S1, when I was young enough to shoot stuff and not too old and crippled to use a camera ;)

It’s an ok short, maybe a bit too “vanilla” for me but does the job.

I did feel some of the skin tones were blown out and could have been handled better.

The S1 looks clinically great - looking forward to seeing what Vlog brings (and whether I’ll add it to my current EVA1 and GH5 combo).
