A "Clear Look at the Issue of Resolution" comparison by Steve Yedlin, ASC. He offers an intriguing demonstration on how capture formats, pixel counts and postproduction techniques affect image quality and why simply counting Ks is not a solution when selecting a camera." End quote.

Please be cautious about the ebay seller “withheartforcanon“. He is selling fake LEXAR x1066 CF cards! The data rate says it all. The first picture displays his, the second the regular ones.

    Iscorama Pre-36 with Helios 44 @ f2.8 (oval aperture) on Canon 5D3

To get that sharp on my (sharpness tweaked) Kowa Inflight or Kowa B&H with Core DNA attached I'd need to stop down to at least f5.6. Sharpness is indeed often overrated, but it's sure nice to have and can always be softened in Resolve very nicely. Iscorama still has perfect balance of sharpness but with organic feel due to vintage coating. More modern cinelux type lenses are as sharp, yet look very clinical (to my eyes at least).

Nice. Beautiful shadows on her face. Better than some of the "references" I've seen - modern art deco. Would love to see some motion footage.. which always looked good to me from ML raw!

Thanks for the thrilling discussion. The camera is a 5D MKII with ML RAW and the lens a Zeiss ZF 35mm. @Zach Goodwin you got it right immediately!

I really like the look of this - exposure and all! Is it an Olympus cam? No one seems to want to guess - put us out of our misery please.. what is it!?

I think the issue is not seeing a dynamic highlight for reference. This shot would be a perfectly acceptable exposure for a David Fincher film if a practical was in the shot.

preliminary test is wiping out the lines 100%.

    1. Shot gray card out of focus at a light level that seemed to maximize the vertical lines.
    2. Brought that clip into DaVinci and used Temporal NR to remove noise, leaving the lines intact. Raised it to 50 IRE. Removed all color. Then applied the inverted color LUT.
    3. Exported that as a single frame 12bit dpx.
    4. Re-imported and applied as a matte. Layer mixer set to Overlay blending mode.

and that's it. right now there is a slight shift in gain. which means I need to dial in how neutral the 50% gray is. it's a little too bright right now. I want to get it so it doesn't affect anything but the lines. Also wondering if I could use a luminance secondary to limit it just to the shadows.

Moot.  Kinefinity wouldn't be broadcasting about prores support if they didn't have the licence in the bag in some way or another.  The person who responded to your email probably just went on their own website, saw the brand isn't listed and responded accordingly.  I seriously doubt the person handling random unsolicited emails is taking the time, let alone even able to access the list of pending licencing deals going on in one of the biggest technology companies in the world!

The Terra has a lot of advantages over the URSA Mini 4.6k.
    - Higher Resolution.
    - Switchable shutter (the irony).
    - Higher FPS.
    - Lightweight, smaller and more modular.
    - Kinemount.
    - Choice between V-lock and Sony batteries.
Blackmagic obviously have a much stronger sales channel and a vast user base . Plus the image quality comparison is up for questioning. Still, it's a very interesting prospect I'm very keen to explore.

The KineMAX 6K does not have ProRes. Only the JUST ANNOUNCED 6K camera does. I doubt that Kinefinity would switch from Cineform to ProRes without getting proper licensing. Considering that everything Kinefinity has ever promised they have apparently delivered on time and time again. Just because it is a Chinese company doesn't mean they indulge in seedy business practices.
Personally I'm looking forward to picking up the 4K after this lowers the price of that camera. 2K cineform is plenty for me   Especially with that locking Nikon mount speedbooster.

Wow, a conversation about a new camera release has turned into arguments over ProRes licensing?
Kinefinity are actually a small unit in a huge Chinese astronomy imagery company, I'm sure they have all this stuff sorted.
Aside the negativity... this camera is a very compelling option which needs better worldwide support. I'm excited to see more of this camera soon.

These Canon 'hate rants' have to be for traffic right? Meanwhile the 6300 overheats and is useless for production work. there is no perfect camera.
I got my 80D on Tuesday and just finished my first shoot with. It looks great. No, it's not an FS7 (we have one of those in the office). But for the price and reliability it's fine. I've produced about 150+ videos with my 70D since its launch and will no doubt go on to do the same with this 80D.

None of us know the in's and outs of the negotiations between Apple and Kinefinity. The facts we know are: Kinefinity has been reported to have been negotiating with Apple for two years, Kinefinity put out a press statement that they have official backing from Apple for Prores, Apple haven't updated their website. Apple haven't started any court action against Kinefinity in the 7 months the announcement has been made, or ever, nor made any official statement debunking the press release.
This isn't the pattern of a copyright infringer, for starters, the bogus implementation of Prores has been in the wild for many years, they could have slotted it into their cameras in a very short amount of time, the fact they have taken this long seems to infer that they are following Apple's process. Secondly, Apple have had 7 months to put a stop to this, and yet have chosen not to. This is not the pattern Apple follows with it's legal action, they make public statements very quickly after media coverage, and always aggressively protect their IP.
Occams Razor suggests that Kinefinity are in the process of getting official approval, have not yet got it but have reached the stage where they feel confident in putting it in their marketing material. Apple not disagreeing with their press release suggests that at a minimum, there is a bridge in place that Apple do not wish to burn. (Actually, if this were any company but Apple, OR would suggest that the update to the webpage is sat in some developers TODO list, but I daren't invite the Macocalypse on myself by suggesting that there is nothing special about the company)
Either way, thank-you for keeping nationality out of it after I asked.

bootsie got a reaction from roccoforte in Rectilux Core DNA - non-rotating single-focus attachment for anamorphic lenses
John Barlow has the following advise:
"Yes some customers experience issues with the grease and some with noise. I have traced the issue to when the package is in the low pressure cargo hold of the aircraft. This causes some grease to be sucked away from the helical during flight. The noise or movement is because some part of the helical is without grease. Rectilux was designed for easy self-maintenance as shown on page 37 of the manual. Sometimes it is best to use a brush to spread the grease uniformly. Rectilux will be smoother after a bedding in period and will be a lot quieter - the more you use it the better it will become. Mobil grease can be obtained here:

I remember pre-ordering both these cameras as a "get in line incase it's good" kind of thing. Didn't last long as I used my funds elsewhere on stuff I needed immediately.
No global shutter is no big deal. It will come in later models - shipping in July.
I love Blackmagic cameras as the aesthetic is awesome, especially for the money. It's a pity the 120fps is limited on the Ursa Mini though.
The great thing is there are a lot of options for all types of shooters. I personally don't buy many cameras at all - I just get one when I need one and spent most of my surplus funds on gear that is current for a long time.
No need to get angry over cameras and gear though. There's a world out there.
