I just ran a burst mode test in Raw and got 42 the first time and 39 the second time.

On the Focus Beam,  I was told that Contrast Focus Cameras don't send out a focus beam.  I was kinda bummed about this.    I have a Metz 50 AF1 and it doesn't work on my GH2 or GH4.

I forgot to add that they have innovated with the smooth aperture or ISO, which adjust the exposure automatically like for example when you walk into a room or outside the camera does it automatically and in a seamless way. This will be boon for event shooters like wedding videographers when they follow the bride from outside to inside of the church.

I know you guys are mainly video but I like using mine for photography as well, I think with GH4 new AF it could really be a competent bird in flight or sports camera if it had a pro-level lens at a longer focal length with a fast AF motor. I would vote for an Lumix G Vario X 100-300mm F4 with stabilization & weather proofing.    Maybe throw in a 600mm F5.6 prime.

I mean they have this marvelous focusing on the GH4 but neither Olympus nor panasonic have yet to announce pro level native longer focal lenght lenses for MFT.

    something like  250mm f 3.5 -or  f 4 IS
    400mm 5.6 IS
    100-400 5.6 IS
I bet panasonic could brake new ground with those and go after sports ppl as well.

the up and coming 150 2.8 is only so and so.  if it were 200 2.8 IS  then it would be interesting.

If Canon's recent commintment to product development is any indication the 7D mark II will have

    -1 stop better noise control
    -mic socket
-similiar 720p upscaled to 1080p as before but now with 60 frames as well. ( dont think about shooting video of water or brick walls) those will be fixed in 7d Mark III in the year 2019
-and the super duper feature will be WIFI AND GPS
-multiple face detection and direct facebook upload. :o SOOO COOOL

Brellivids reacted to apefos in Sigma 0.71x aspherical focal recucer with ed glass
Sigma will enter the game of focal reducers for M43 and E-Mount.

They will have an aspherical design, also using extra low dispersion glass to improve edge sharpness.

The Sigma focal reducers will be 0.71x with 1 fstop increase in light.

Will be available in main mounts: Canon FD, Canon EOS EF, Nikon F or G, M42, MC/MD, OM, PK, Leica R, Yashica/Contax

Main problem of all focal reducers in market today is the edge blur, this is due to spherical lens design. Also some small amount of chromatic aberration is present. Sigma will solve these issues using aspherical lenses and extra low dispersion glass.

    This is a rumor.

There's no such thing as a "perfectly safe nuclear industry".  Try saying that to people living in a 5000 mile radius round Tchernobyl or Fukushima.
There's not a single nuclear plant which has insurance, simply cos they can't find an insurance company willing to cover the risk.

In Belgium, with it's "perfectly safe nuclear industry", 2 of the 3 plants have had to shutdown due to tiny microscopic cracks in the plant's core.  Noone inside the perfectly safe nuclear industry knows how to solve it, or what to do with the core and the rest of the plant.  The plants will very probably never startup again.

Nuclear energy creates a wonderful legacy for our children and great granchildren : nuclear waste.  Which will be here at least as long as we are.  Plenty of it was dumped in the oceans, is leaking now and we have no idea what to do with the rest of the waste that's stored all over the planet right now.

There's plenty of sustainable alternatives, the nuclear lobby is heavily subsidized (even after +40 years of development they can't function without heavy national and supranational funding).  A recent EU report was censored because it mentioned how nuclear and fossil energy are subsidized more than sustainable forms of energy.

I'd rather live nearby an ugly windmill than within 1000 miles of a nuclear plant.

Samsung: Blu-Ray 4K UHD Standard Could Be Commercialized by End of the Year

In a bid to distribute UHD content, Samsung Electronics proposes to use more advanced Blu-ray media that complies with the BDXL standard that supports triple-layer 100GB RE (rewritable) and R (write-once) discs as well as quad-layer 128GB R discs for commercial applications
Another technology that is needed for distribution of 4K movies is high efficiency video coding (HEVC, also known as H.265 and MPEG-H part 2) technology that is used for UHD video compression. Being 51% -74% more efficient than currently used MPEG4-AVC/H.264, the HEVC technology allows to compress 4K movies to around 80GB – 90GB, which means that 100GB – 128GB BD media should be enough to store it. The H.265 is currently supported by numerous decoder/encode chips that can be used inside players.

I'm all for more choices and innovation, having said that I'm left thinking that the Blackmagic Pro is still a better option.

    Let me explain:

    GH4 = roughly $2k
    4K add-on = roughly another $2k
    4K external recorder = probably another $2k
    2X crop factor
    no raw option
    clunky form factor
reduced, but still present rolling shutter
    4K add-on needs external power
no release date, hopefully available by the end of the year

    vs.

    Blackmagic 4K
    4K raw and ProRes
    Super35 sensor
    global shutter
$4k including full version of Resolve
less clunky (but still somewhat clunky) form factor
    needs external power
well behind the promised release date, but should be here any day now.

    What am I missing?

Yes I secretly hoped for gx7 (or better) like stabilization, and yes built-in ND and 4:2:2 internal recording would help, but naaaah. Who cares looking at those specs.

Oh yes, only then did we realize that our world was three-dimensional. You're right. I won't see anything in 2D anymore, let alone think about shooting something in 2D. Why don't we just skip all this slowly evolving improvements and demand 10k 3D 14-bit @ 120 fps now?

The phone has two "new" NSA features the motion sensing and finger print reader. Even tho those features can be used to benefit the user as well. The sensor size is a needed improvement even tho a modest one. 8 Mpix is plenty enough.

The pureview camera in the Nokia 808 will likely still be the absolute king in image quality even tho processing might pull the image quality above it in special situations from the Nokia 1020.

Then again Nokia phones are no longer owned by Nokia so I will never buy one again. I'm from Finland and I certainly dont take it lightly when it comes to Microsoft phones and Elop the MS agent.  This iphone 5s might be my next phone.

The idea that Chinese companies just steal designs and products is rather dated I think. Some do, many do not. Also, all the R&D in the world will do nothing if the thing can't be made, the relationship here is symbiotic.

I think 15mm aluminium tubes, baseplates and so on have been around forever too... the pricing of some-such rigs is obscene and unjustifiable. Claiming R&D on those is not defensible.

Forget the hipster-style marketing, they are producing a small engineering miracle. $120,000 or so is nothing to develop a camera with. Naaathing. They are giving us a global shutter & XLR for $2300. Same image quality as $8000 Ikonoskop.

What you're describing here is not the indie filmmaking community, it's a camera-gear-lust driven movement that has very little to do with filmmaking at all.

Honestly, I don't think those video-blog-stars have much of an effect on indie filmmaking at all (unless you consider lame camera tests edited to copyrighted music with accompanying fancy titles "indie filmmaking"), if anything they have an effect on gear heads, but I don't see any serious filmmaker pointing them as their great influences anytime soon. Those indie filmmakers might even know who they are and may have seen a video or two when researching a camera, but most of these bloggers have little to offer (or at least have offered very little so far) when it comes to proper filmmaking advice on how to tell a good story and make a relevant film.

Let's be honest here for once, regardless of how much we love the tech and wish for the dream camera to come along at a price we can afford, the choice of a camera for a narrative film is probably the least important element of its making, and as long as these people keep acting like it's the the only important factor, they will never represent "the indie filmmaking community".
