Dane reacted to Andrew Reid in Just a quick thank you for supporting EOSHD over the years
Looking back I owe everyone a big thank-you for using the forum and taking an interest in the blog, it is amazing what it has turned into with so little effort on my part  I think this place must be the only website on the entire internet without adverts. Long may it continue like that.
Got a GX9 arriving tomorrow... about time I did a review of something cheap with the big shift to high-end stuff. Let me know what you'd like to see in the review of it.

In my ongoing self-appointed role as "LOG gamma" police, I've created a video that shows how RAW is processed into images we use, both for photography and video.  It drives me nuts that people talk about 14+ stops of DR, as if noise, or sensor pixel sensitivity, stays constant from lower to higher values.  After 5 stops, IMHO, noise makes any extra DR recorded by the sensor quite undesirable.   Further, even in 5 stops of DR there is a huge difference between how well cameras record DR even in fairly well exposed image.  That is to say, the GH5S isn't better only because it can record in low light.  It can be better because even at ISO 800 it will get a richer image in the shadows.  However, it is still 8-bit.  It still throws out gobs of sensor data.  Well, enough of that.  Another video to put you to sleep

Don't worry about the codec on the E-M1 II, it's very good. Minor differences between that and the superior 10bit on the GH5.
And that price is very good indeed.
The flat profile can actually be graded quite a lot before it falls apart.
I should get my GH5 vs E-M1 II comparison shootout article and footage out, it's been a while and I haven't got round to it!

Martin has done a superb job.
It converts to ProRes or Cinema DNG, you just drag and drop the MLV clips direct from your card into the app window.
Select the gamma curve, i.e. Canon LOG.
Select the touch-up options, for example to remove focus pixels on cameras with phase-detect AF on the CMOS sensor and aliasing around highlights.
Go to File, Export, choose flavour of ProRes. And it's fast!

I changed my mind about getting a Sony A7s, Im going back to Leica instead (fingers crossed on finding a cheap SL).
Therefor there was a risk that review would just fade away and never get done (don't have much time for YT anymore).
So I decided to just finish it with what I have so far and when I do get the Leica version and have tested all my lenses and such I will make a revisit review.
Do I think you should you buy it?
Well that depends. Im certainly very glad I have it. I love it. Like seriously, Love It!
    For others I say:
YES if you are an analog MF shooter that has lenses.
YES if you are an A7/Leica shooter that want to get into analog MF as well.
YES if you are an A7/Leica shooter that loves vintage glass and experimentation.
MAYBE if you are primarily a digital shooter that wants some fast portrait lenses or just happen to have $500 burning a hole in your pocket.
NO if you think DOF is everything.
NO if you think megapixels is tha shit!
    Pros:
The awesome MF lenses! $500 isn’t much to give another dimension to your camera. Quality is great. 80mm f1.9 at x0.7 crop is awesome. Its the Medium Format Experience on the cheap. Cons:
If you don’t have an interest in MF film it becomes niche. No AF. Some MF lenses are quite big. Not all MF lenses focus to infinity (according to rumor, all of mine does). $500 is still $500 and used once aren’t gonna be very common.

Got the camera in the mail today, immediately had to test the 60fps raw burst mode. I used a SanDisk Extreme PRO 300MB/s card and was amazed how fast the bursts were being written to the card (over 48 frames of 5K raw in less than 8 seconds).  Raw processing in After Effects takes forever, took about 2 hours to render ~34 seconds. No raw color adjustments, just rendered the image sequence and applied warp stabilizer to the shot of the power lines.  Kept all the missing frame flashes as well as the frames it records after the 48 frames of 60p (pretty cool speed up effect it gives). I shot another 2000+ frames which I will render out and share here soon. Used a Speed Booster Ultra w/ Zeiss zf 50mm 1.4.
Also, I tried to connect my Atomos Shogun via HDMI and was able to get clean signal for 4k 30p and 1080 60p but it says connection error when I try Cinema 4K. I have the latest firmware so not sure what the problem is...?

Too bad they couldn't get it to 72.  Three second slow-mo bursts in RAW?  Could be fun for video.  Two seconds?  Still interesting.

Oh man, would I like that 1608 x 904 RAW bayer on my CF card
I didn't shoot much 1080p on the 1D C, but I did compare the 4K to the C100's 1080p and obviously the 1D C is the superior image, with much less aliasing. This was shot at ISO 12,800 - you also get a finer noise grain in 4K which is more film like and translates to less noise overall when downscaled to 1080p in post.

Shot this film in Botswana and I have to say that the BM cinema camera works perfectly for wildlife filming. You will need an external monitor because the screen on the back acts more as a mirror than as a display but other than that it has been great. It eats a lot of hard drive space so a few extra ssd's are needed.

Damn. Well perhaps if Fuji receive feedback that this will cost them a lot of sales they may make a change to the firmware.  They need to understand that the cost of a 4k recorder is no small addition. And its not like we are getting 10 bit with it either.  It gets to the point that people may as well buy a dedicated pro video camera.  For such a small change in firmware they could bring a lot of new people to the system.

I think this camera will go really well with some Canon FDs or Takumars. The videos I've seen look a little too sharp for me, and I think using older glass would really make the image look softer and more film-like. Definitely a cheaper alternative to pricey Fuji lenses.

Dane reacted to Andrew Reid in Canon 5D Mark II raw dynamic range versus Sony FS5
I have the old VAF-5D2 (not the B version), it's good, but unless I'm shooting an architecture-heavy shot which is unusually prone to noise, I don't like to soften the image with it and it makes accurate focus tricky in the magnified assist. Also it has the softer edges on wide angle lenses, although I believe the B version is improved in that respect.
I rate it highly, but the moire really is minimally noticeable most of the time on the 5D Mark II in raw and it almost in a funny way makes for a more detailed image.
The VAF-5D2 brings the 5D Mark II's image in line with the 5D3's image in raw. You can barely tell them apart with the filter installed. The 5D2 is a bit noisier. That's the ONLY difference. Both a bit on the softer side though, which is why sometimes I prefer the rough and ready non-filtered image of the 5D2 in raw.

Not sure if you've read Andrew's post about 7d raw:
    http://www.eoshd.com/2013/08/raw-video-on-the-canon-7d-super-35mm-raw-for-under-1000/
The 7D really needs the Mosaic filter to help reduce aliasing. With the filter it's a great camera for raw since it takes CF.

Edit: All this 5D2/forgotten camera excitement got me looking on craigslist. I found a wedding photographer selling her used 5D2 body for $500. ~140k actuations and some scratches on the screen. Talked her down to $480, just met up and bought it. Maybe you should consider selling your 7D and getting a used 5D2 since prices are getting very low. The deal I just got is extremely lucky but I see another on craigslist for $700. Now I can finally do some 5D2 vs 5D3 raw comparison tests of my own. I can post the results if people are interested.
