Most of them are talking about 28mm spherical on S35, which is about a 40mm equivalent. It's Fincher's preferred wide, and shockingly enough, the widest lens Deakins used on No Country for Old Men.

Apparently, the 50mm (70mm equivalent) was Hitchcock's favorite. I love it for medium close-ups, which are the meat of my films.

I personally don't like to go much wider than 40mm unless I'm going for a specific effect or my location demands it. Or for steadicam/gimbal shots, I suppose.

Doesn't seem that wide to me. Lubezki spends most of his time ultra-wide, Polanski was usually on the wide side of things (40mm anamorphic and 20mm anamorphic), Spielberg hovers around 28mm for the most part... Bay and Woo obviously go super long, too, but spend as much time super wide.

Looks good for sure, although I don't like the smudged corners in the wide shots.
Also, I'd love to see it compared versus full frame with bright lenses. Sony A7S + Nikon / Sigma 20mmm f/1.8, Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2, or any 50mm f/0.95 / f/1.2 will give some crazy shallow dof. Different aesthetics than big format lenses, but It would be interesting to see what's the actual difference.

If you're used to Nikon then get the D750, and don't forget the lenses are as important as the camera. What do you use with the D200?
If D750 is out of your price range get the D5300 or D5500.

good 1080p is better than mediocre 4k.  Grab an A7S and shoot internal 1080p with a cheap 50mm prime like a contax 50/1.7.  nothing will come close for the money.  full frame for most stuff, aps-c crop for close punch ins.

same ballpark. but has some differences. for one, the front element on the Rectilux Core DNA doesn't rotate so you can use a variable ND, if i'm reading the press release correctly.

Thanks Aaron, but I just had a thought (like in Batman when he used to say "Robin that plan might just work"): I could get the weather sealed, longer battery, more video controls and future V Log in the behemoth GH4 and get it with the cheap kit lens: 14-42 F3.5-5.6 MKII for a very similar price to the G7 with the 12-35. I know you are supposed to favor glass but it doesn't sound like a terrible lens, for now. At least I will have the proper camera and can upgrade to the 12-35 when I can?
GH4 with cheap kit lens (14-42) or G7 with better lens (12-35)?
    edit:
Case closed. I went for the 14-45 which was better reviewed than the 14-42 and the GH f-king 4. Got a G1 in the mix too, no idea if that is any good but it was free with the lens. What a relief, the search is over

@liamlumiere Totally understand you for not wanting the hassle of ML raw. Not sure if you can change the aspect ratio with H264 - I think you can't.
Maybe the Samsung NX500 is an option. No 4:3 mode, but plenty of resolution, so no big deal when you have to crop a lot. Framing is still difficult, but you could tape some guide lines on the screen...

I think my best bet may be Panasonic's new G7 and its 4K photo mode with choosable aspect ratios, 4:3 in this case. I've read it's equal in quality to the GH4 yet a third less in price. Very tempting indeed.

Interesting article and thanks Andrew for these tests.
I have had the GH4 about a year now, I had thought of selling it and getting one of the newer Sonys, but after quite a bit of reading and deliberation I decided to keep it and not go with the current flavors of the month.
The thing is Panasonic are a bit like Canon, a bit more cutting edge and obviously geared towards the hobbiest and film maker with not a lot of money, but they basically have the same conservative approach as Canon, point being when they build a camera its pretty much reliable and works well without a lot of add ons and cluttered menus.
The GH4 for example never overheats, doesnt chew up batteries, runs forever on a single battery, has decent rolling shutter performance, gives a great detailed image with room to color correct within reason and needs only a few lenses.
I have even shot bands at night with just the Panasonic 12-35 2.8 (obviously no speed booster) and have obtained a very nice image even tho it was underexposed.
I learnt a long time ago that the more hurdles you have to jump through in order to be creative and get something in the moment, the less you will be inclined to do so, because of the amount of work you have to do to set things up in the first place.
And this is where I feel Sony may be over reaching and in too much of a rush, they have made a great camera the in the A7RII...but it overheats, has bad rolling shutter in S35 mode, and a more or less has a difficult Log to use, complex menu system etc...it seems to me that they have great techs, great sensors, but are in too much of a rush to capture the market, and that may work for a short time, but in the long term I dont feel it will.
Now if the V-Log turns out to be as good as many of the testers say, then the poor old underdog GH4 may just be the hidden gem in the pack, (Some owners of Panny and Sony cameras are already saying that) but I guess we will see.

@Julian @Hans Punk Thanks guys for your input. To be honest, after taking a trip over to the ML forums, it reminded me of when I I frequented there when I had a 7D and later 5D3 and to be honest, getting into that workflow again filled me with dread. Do you know if they offer the native h264 codec plus the 4:3 aspect ratio for something like the 50d/550d? If so I'd pick one up just to get used to shooting this way with anamorphic. I can't really bring along a 50d to a shoot and have to explain the complexities of alternative softwares to a client. Done it before and they weren't very impressed no matter how impressive it actually is.
I'm really looking for a mirrorless camera that has this feature implemented so hoping that Sony or Samsung or whoever will offer it. There just doesn't seem to be a lot out there at this price point.

Ah yes, my mistake...looks like 50D is still the best crop sensor choice for the money. (£200-250 in a recent BIN ebay search)
If 4k is not a deal breaker, and you would not mind a fairly clunky workflow...it seems like a no brainer, you get sooo much bang for your buck.

If the mainboard and main CPU backs straight onto the rear (likely) then it is indeed the heatsink being covered by the LCD.
Also I notice when 4K is enabled, you can't enable Sunny Weather mode which makes the LCD backlight go crazy bright, thus generating more heat. It gets greyed out in the menus.
    Worth testing this I reckon...

Get a 50D instead of a 550D. The 550D is seriously bottlenecked by the SD card, the 50D can handle higher resolutions.
The 50D doesn't record audio though, so you have to do that externally.
7D is also a good option, but not as cheap as the 50D. 5D Mark II is even better, and pretty great combined with a VAF anti moire filter. Gets you close to 5D3 performance/resolutions.
My Canon EOS 50D is for sale by the way

I have a lot of Canon equipment, incl. 1Dx, 5D3 and all major lenses. Got pissed with the video quality and got a A7s, then also the Atomos Shogun for 4K.  I got my A7R ii yesterday and tested a little bit, both video and still. Did not do a take for 30min (yet), but it worked nicely.
The big benefit for A7R ii is the combination of stills and 4k video in a small package, especially for traveling. For such use, you will normally film for max a few minutes pr. clip.
Now, I see a lot of complaining about the overheat issue. If the filming of "a few minutes clips"  is a problem, then is bad, yes.
However, the point is that pr definition, if you film constantly for > 30 min, you need to use a recorder (it will stop at 30min anyway), with or without a monitor. I do not see this as a big drawback as for such jobs, you will stay in one location.

Just received the RX100IV today and I'm dang excited to create some things with it. I had the mark 1 and despite its limitations, had lots of fun shooting with it.
I created a 15 second instagram video at work today just as a means to try out the 4K mode. I was in a hot warehouse in Texas right next to an open door. After 1 take, it began to display the overheat symbol. After two takes, it told me to let the camera cool and shut off. Switching to 1080p mode and I was just fine.
This is by no means an A Camera, but I do think it is an absolutely incredible creative tool. Its so versatile! The 4K is sharp and clean, and the image grades well. This particular short was shot in  Picture Profile 4 and graded with film convert to add a lot of punch. I'll continue to share my thoughts and include more video after I've had more of a chance to shoot with it.
General light coming from a nearby open door. A bit of spot from below added by a pair of Lumos Trip Pro LED's. Cinevate Duzi V3 slider.

Yes it's not really authentic as such, we did start off with a look closer to Kung Fury, much softer, but it looked so fuzzy in some of the wide shots we settled on a an "impression" of VHS, a bit of the feel rather than authentic. I did actually have an old VHS ready to genuinely dub the film, but we thought better of it
I've knocked up a press release so yes we're going to throw it to a few blogs, thanks for the suggestions, I'll add em to the list.
Oh BTW I thought I'd add that this was all C100 and Ninja 2, not the AVCHD internal. It was recorded to DNxHD 220x.
Actually one shot came from the AVCHD backup, as occasionally the Ninja just doesn't trigger (about 1 in 200 times) which is a bummer. Still you'd never spot the shot so all is well...

    This!
I'd be more worried about the video getting flagged for the penises than copyright infringement on the games. It's more like fan art.
The animations are absolutely amazing! Enjoyed every second of it. Awesome job, love it!
The VHS style is also very cool, but maybe a tad to sharp and detailed. Not really an issue, but the SD-look of Kung Fury was a bit more convincing imo. Maybe downsizing to 480p and upsizing to 1080p would give kind of the same effect?
Anyway I think it has potential (and deserves!) to reach a huge audience on YouTube, if a few big blogs pick it up...
You should send it to some gamer websites/blogs. I think http://kotaku.com/ is a good fit. Or send some behind the scenes info + shots to http://petapixel.com/
