  1. It's a neat little gadget for sure. Got both a BMPCC and a GH4, and I'm surprised at how much better than BMPCC image in most circumstances (other than resolution)
  2. This is inevitable and honestly, a lot will change in the industry in the next 5-10 years I think. The lower end cameras are rapidly scrunching up to the higher end. Phones will be perfectly viable soon. Hell, the iphone6 probably is right now. Obviously, talent for lighting, keen eye, editing etc... will always need human creativity, but bread and butter basic stuff will become increasingly oversaturated.
  3. If I was in the market for either, the big wild card for me would be color science. I'd lean towards blackmagic now, but we'll see once they're released into the wild.
  4. Doubt we'll see much with the DVX200 out. Maybe 4K/60p? Highly doubt there'll be 4:2:2 or 10bit. Maybe higher bitrates and higher FPS @ 1080. Slightly better low light performance, 1 stop DR increase. Something like that is what I'm guessing.
  5. Seems really polarized on how good V-log is. Lots of the beta testing was really positive. Now some people think it's not great, others think it's fantastic. Hopefully it just takes some getting used to.
  6. I do weddings and I am with you there, I really don't like doing posed and stage stuff like that. Usually the photographer will do stuff like that and you'll catch it, but even though it feels more like a document of the day rather than you trying to create a movie.

    Great article

Not being a big deal doesn't equal loser. It means you aren't a big deal. Most people aren't (me included) And it's true. The likelihood of the top of the food chain type of folk posting here is rare. But that's ok. We're all in the same boat, trying to get better and learn a thing or two. Still important to maintain perspective.
  8. ^Yes, they are either got really, really lucky with venue lighting or they used their own. You could use an Alexa in many of the venues I film in, and it wouldn't look half that good. The bare lighting is often dreadful.
  9. Looks fantastic, but I don't even think it's the new sensor in the 4.6K. It's the originally 4K sensor, isn't it?

    GH4 V-Log $99

They were very, very different from prosumer cameras. Their video functions were magnitudes better than prosumer camera's still functions. They've since been eclipsed and they weren't without flaws, but this idea that Canon DSLRS produce awful is a little much. Even stock 5D3 is better than 'decent'. Have we become so spoiled?
  11. I have dabbled with it. Sold some stuff on Pond5, Shutterstock, Istock and most recently, Videoblocks. If the stuff you shoot has demand, then there's definitely money to be made. I haven't made a ton, but enough to buy new bits of gear here and there. 90% of my clips sold are actually shots of my dog. The other 5% is shots of my city (Vancouver) and a few other scattered clips. Anything around you that is unique from a landscape standpoint could be valuable. It's worth trying. Worst you end up doing is spending time filming random stuff. We all do that anyway, haha.
  12. For docs I would say a used C100. They are getting really cheap now. Not sure if they are 2500$ cheap yet but it's worth a look.
  13. I'm with you. I've used my trusty GH2 for years, and while it was better in many ways than the Canon models at the time, I've must admit that I prefer Canon color science. The lower res always bothered me though. Can't have it all I suppose.
  14. ...enough time has passed for the 'video' look to be cool and retro! https://www.yahoo.com/tech/vhs-camcorder-app-makes-iphone-videos-look-like-127166818039.html I was wondering when this would happen. When will SD miniDV looks be sought after?

    Why buy?

I can see where you are coming from when it comes to the big guns. I find it a bit strange that people on reduser will take out huge loans for their cameras. Unless they have a steady stream of high end business. But something like a gh4, A7S, BMPCC, why not? They are cheap enough to get even for goofing off and practicing.
  16. This might be specific to blacmagic cameras, but there's a huge thread on bmcuser.com talking about them. The Hoya ProNDs are the best overall, and the SLR Magic vari-ND is the best Vari-ND.
  17. Yeah? Damn, I see this one all the time on craigslist for a reasonable price. Should pick it up.
  18. I'd love to see them. I like all styles of tests too, the really controlled chart type ones and the off the cuff general footage ones. Whatever you got, always neat to see.
  19. What shutter speed are you using with the GH4? I found 1/40 more pleasing than 1/50 with the GH2. I figured it'd be the same with the GH4.
  20. Twixtor works great in some situations and very poorly in others. Film a running dog and try to slow it down 50% with twixtor and it'll look like junk. Fast moving limbs (even with fast shutter speeds) do not work well. Still, it's better than nothing.
  21. ^ While it's a fine alternative, I wouldn't consider it a BMPCC v2. The monitor loses the whole low profile usage of the pocket.
  22. Dull and muted with nary a decent color seems more trendy to me these days. Really cool video though, and surprisingly good song.
  23. Is it though? There's a lot great image quality from a fundamental standpoint. Meaning the image is clean, sharp, vibrant, etc... but really good, imaginative cinematography is still a rare commodity. Most of the stuff I see online is competent, but hardly mind blowing. It's like that with still photography too. Still quality has been great for a long time, and lord knows I can take a decent picture...but really good photographers still capture that certain something that I cannot and the non-technical quality really stands out. So I think mid-level quality is being saturated but the truly magical stuff is still rare and probably always will be no matter how good the camera is, because there's such a strong human element of knowing what/when/how to film something.
  24. Agreed, especially since you'll want an IR cut/ND filter by the sounds of it.
  25. I'm planning on getting it. I was curious to see what was at NAB, but turns out there's no real replacement for it anywhere in the marketplace right now. The micro can kinda be rigged up to be a replacement, but even then it doesn't have the same small footprint that the pocket does. The image will be competitive for a long time too, me thinks.
