A candle is not a good low light test either because you are either at full saturation of the pixel (bright flame), or barely nothing (black background).

Looking back I owe everyone a big thank-you for using the forum and taking an interest in the blog, it is amazing what it has turned into with so little effort on my part  I think this place must be the only website on the entire internet without adverts. Long may it continue like that.
Got a GX9 arriving tomorrow... about time I did a review of something cheap with the big shift to high-end stuff. Let me know what you'd like to see in the review of it.

I was in Tokyo in April, went to Bic, Map and Yodobashi as mentioned earlier. Map is your best bet for used digital gear. If you're looking at vintage lenses, there are tons of shops all over, when you go to places like Shinjuku you will see lots of camera shops, just wander into them and start checking stuff out. There's so much camera wise in Tokyo - not surprising since its the largest metro area in the world and home to most of the worlds camera makers. Its so cool coming from the US where there are no camera shops in many cities.
All Sony stuff is Japanese market only, languages are locked and no warranty outside Japan. They won't even sell you a body if you don't speak Japanese. International versions are more expensive. I got a long demo from a Panasonic rep at Bic, the GH5 could be switched to English. Same for the Olympus and Fuji. If you buy anything in Japan, you can avoid paying tax. Though as mentioned, HK is much cheaper for new gear and all the models are international versions.
Bic is a gear slut's dream, every camera and lens on the market is on display - and you can try everything but the high end Leica and Phase One stuff out. I went there three times - each visit was a couple hours - just tinkering with everything from the PenF, to the FS5, to the Hasselblad Xd1. Also take your passport to Bic - you can buy a tourist metro card for unlimited travel on the Tokyo trains, it winds up being a really great deal and allows you to really explore Tokyo on the cheap. Google it, it winds up costing the same as just a few rides a day, we easily got out money's worth out of it. Also, Bic is more than just cameras, the one I was in had 8 floors of everything electronic, from phones to TV's to vacuums. Its total sensory overload. My wife even thought it was cool, and sh'e not into any gadgets.
Here are a few photos from our time in Japan: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.752566191617450.1073741852.558979244309480&type=1&l=ae03370d02

I was there back in 2010, thought I'd look around for some tech and camera gear... but what these guys, especially Oli, say. Price is only a bit cheaper if you buy a local market model (e.g. Kiss instead of Rebel or ___D), but they do not provide worldwide warranty, so... didn't pick up a single thing except for a tripod that time (long exposures in Tokyo is kinda cool). But they do have some cool stores to roam around... but you don't end up drooling more than you would over at a B&H... If you're into watches, I'd look at that instead, I've recently imported a Casio Pro Trek PRW-6000SC-7 and love it! They've got some cool stuff and nice prices there.

The price won't be much different than in the US for brand new stuff but the warranty might be a pain to manage later on. Some camera are also only availablre with Japanese menu... You would find better deal in China and Hong Kong. However for used stuff there are a lot of gems and Japanese people are crazy with gears, you can find 40 years old lenses brand new with packaging!
The main stores are Map camera, Yodobashi Camera, and BIC in Shinjuku

New firmware update, 10th October 2017:
Following bugs were found after updating the firmware to Ver.2.0 but now they have been fixed.
[Power Save LVF Shooting] was automatically set to [1 sec].
(This makes the camera go into sleep mode in 1 sec in a standby mode.)
    * [Power Save LVF Shooting] will be set to [OFF] when the firmware Ver.2.0 is updated to Ver.2.1.
If you would like to enable [Power Save LVF Shooting], please set it on manually by selecting a designated time.
The parameters of picture quality adjustment in Photo Style were all set to -5 when setting the recording mode to [MP4 HEVC(AAC)]. This bug has been fixed.
    * The parameters of picture quality adjustment in Photo Style will be reset to ±0 when the firmware Ver.2.0 is updated to Ver.2.1.
If you would like to adjust the picture quality in Photo Style, please adjust them manually.
There were cases where [V-LogL View Assist] did not work, This bug has been fixed.
There were cases where motion pictures recorded in [AVCHD] cannot be divided. This bug has been fixed.

Agreed about the de-squeeze options.  If I were writing the monitor firmware I'd allow a continuous variation between 1.00x and 2.00x (at least to 0.01x resolution), and then show the resulting output rectangle ranging from 4:3 to 2.66:1.  "Special" values like 1.33x, 1.5x, 1.79x, and 2x could be made available in a separate dumbed-down menu I suppose.  I think the problem is that anamorphic is confusing to many people, and Panasonic has made some lowest common denominator assumptions about their customer base.

Switching from Premiere CC/Resolve to FCPX is the best decision I ever made. Over the last year I must have saved at least six months in editing and render times
(Btw, today I downloaded a 30 day trial of Capture One Pro 10. Took me about 20 minutes to realize that it's time to dump Lightroom as well. So, "Buy buy Adobe. Loved you from CS5 to CC but you have lost the mojo.")

Francisco Rios reacted to benymypony in Pack of original LUTs made by myself
    Dear EOSHD community,
I am an independent french graphic designer and I regularly work in photo and video.
Over the years, I created a collection of 3D LUT files to ease the color grading of my projects.
Recently I created a pack with my 38 original LUTs.
They are profiled on high-resolution color matrix and were built to preserve skin tones as best as possible.
I had the chance to work with many different cameras and I spent a lot of time creating these looks and testing on raw footages, from 5DMKII and 7D with Magic Lantern, GH4, A7S, BMPC 4K, and stills from RED EPIC.
About HDSLR, these LUTs are calibrated on CineStyle/Cinelike profiles.
Also in my pack is included a LUT to properly « flat » a footage and get a good working basis before grading.
Website for more infos : http://luts.iwltbap.com
Instagram with short video samples : https://instagram.com/luts
At the end of this post you will find some sample images before-after.
My LUTs pack is for sale $20, but I created a discount code of -25% for EOSHD community.
So you can get it for $15 instead of $20 via : https://sellfy.com/p/Ainy/-EOSHD
My pack is regularly updated with new LUTs and all updates are free.
On my website you can download a free LUT with the famous teal-orange look.
Also, I offer for free a 4K film grain based on 35mm film scans (10sec video encoded in Apple ProRes 422 at 25fps).
Hope you will like my LUTs.
    Best,
    Benjamin

Francisco Rios reacted to Mattias Burling in Review of the service Stolen Camera Finder!
When you buy and sell used camera gear  you need to be careful. A lot of stolen stuff floats around and markets like eBay makes it easy for them to disappear. That’s why a service like Stolen Camera Finder is a godsend.
    http://www.stolencamerafinder.com/
I recently bought a Leica T. A lovely camera. For street shooting I would say its the best camera I’ve ever used. Totally in love!
But this is not about the camera.
The price was fine, the seller had a long history, everything seemed legit. He even provided the serial number. When I got it home I tested it out and everything was fine. The day after I had to leave for a tripp and I naturally brought the camera. It was not until I got home that I remembered that I should just do a routine check of the number on Stolen Camera Finder.
Why I didn’t do this beforehand, like I usually do is beyond me…
Stolen Camera Finder works by crawling the internet and sites like Flickr, registering EXIF Data.
In many cameras the unique serial number of the camera and lens are imbedded in the data. You then simply drag-n-drop an image on the site or enter the number manually. If the crawler gets a match its BINGO!
    You can:
Find a stolen camera Report a found camera Checkout previous owners of camera Track stolen and reposted images So What Happened?
I entered the number manually and… Bingo!
It had been reported stolen in Spain two years ago. So I filed a report of a “Camera Found” and waited for a day or two.
Since I didn’t hear anything I contacted Matt, who runs the site.
He has now put me in touch with the original owner who lives in Italy and we are working out the details on how it will be returned!
All in all I will probably loose a bit of money since the seller probably wont pay up and/or used a fake name etc. But I will certainly gain a bit on my “Feel Good Account”.
And at the end of the day, I would love it if the same thing happened to me if anything ever got stolen.
A bit of a sunshine story imo
(now back to searching for a new Leica T, like its slogan says, "Easy to use, Hard to forget".)

I love this forum for the fights that break out! Sometimes, I do wonder how much of it is down to trolling & how much is down to confussion over terminology.
The way i see it, is that there is no such thing as a "sensor look", what it we are really talking about is how a sensor transposes the qualities of a given lens to create a picture or image.
I have noticed this with the swirly bokeh madness created by the Helios 40-2 85mm f1.9: depending on how big the sensor is (FF, APS-C or s16mm), will have have an effect on how much of the lens circle the sensor will be able to use in order to take a picture. So, no matter what sensor/camera you use, you'll always get the insane swirly bokeh, because that is the LOOK that this lens produces.
So when you put the same lens on different sensor sizes, you're not creating a new LOOK, just a different focal lenth & interpretation of the lenses characteristics?
Shit, now I think I am confused!

    Hello,
a7sii for Stills is not good enough imho. I've got a 5d3 and this a7s2 and each one has its own role : 5d3 for stills and a7s2 for videos. Some people say the a7r2 can deal with both stills and videos.

if I had to choose then I would take the a7r2.
