  The problem is Premiere. It doesn't support Cinema DNG to a high enough standard to be feasible. The results aren't pretty! This is really strange as After Effects has no such problem and Adobe Camera Raw delivers excellent debayering quality, with plenty of features. Even stranger when you consider DNG is an Adobe technology.   Resolve the way to go for now. Just make sure you have CUDA for smooth performance. GTX 560 Ti or higher.

Magic Lantern shows 10.9 stops of dynamic range on the raw histogram when shooting raw video.   There's more to dynamic range than just a number.   I remember one of the flat picture profiles for the Nikon D800's H.264 video mode was measured nearly 12 stops.   The problem with that is you're trading colour accuracy and smooth gradation for more dynamic range.   8bit does not have the capacity to do 12 stops justice. It also depends how much of the dynamic range is usable. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera quotes 13 stops, but there's quite a lot of noise in the shadows.   In the first Zacuto shootout, which I liked because it focused on DSLRs vs film, they had a section where they imagined how wonderful dynamic range would be on DSLRs if they shot raw, and compared a raw still to the video output. That gives you an idea of what a leap raw is on the 5D Mark III regardless of whether the sensor measures, 11 stops, 12 stops of 14 stops.

OK thanks everyone. Pocket Cinema Camera held onto.   I've cancelled my orders for the 2.5K Micro Four Thirds and 4K cameras with CVP and had my deposits refunded. Was in first 5 for the MFT camera and within first 30 for the 4K model but I've waited 6 months for the MFT version and still no sign of it. Enough is enough.     I would like to review the 4K camera but Blackmagic will have to make a move and support my coverage, as I'm no longer prepared to wait in an endless queue for one.

I actually think this thread has its uses.   For those looking for advice on the suitability of the lenses they find on eBay, I encourage people to post pictures, model name and descriptions but not links to the eBay page.   - Discuss the lenses you find if they are unusual. That knowledge is important.   - Try not to post auctions links because it happens to be an anamorphic lens. Must be discussion worthy.   - Post a link if you have questions about the suitability of the lens for filmmaking   Let's try that and if the concerns about inflated auction prices still remain I will close it.   And please no advertising.

It isn't silly at all. It isn't acceptable to use wire transfers. It isn't acceptable to solicit payments from multiple people with the intention to sell to the highest bidder. Once my own investigations into whether any criminal activity has taken place are concluded you will receive an instant ban.

Going to seek the opinions of my valued readers on this one...   With the Magic Lantern raw, we're in the creative field of shooting raw with incredible image quality from Canon DSLRs. Obviously this changes things quite a bit especially for Blackmagic's still delayed cameras.   Resolve is my main grading tool for Canon raw footage. 4K and Micro Four Thirds mounts are still unique features, but as I run EOSHD myself (there's no team) I don't really have the resources to cover so many cameras, nor do I need so many cameras for my filmmaking.   That means dropping a few from the schedules.   The way it is going at the moment I will have 4 Blackmagic bodies! EF, MFT, 4K and Pocket.   Which ones do you want to see continued coverage of on EOSHD?

  I think they do have an interest in image quality, it is the clue part that is lacking.   Moreover, we should be doing this for ourselves anyway. Our creative urges should be to satisfy ourselves first and foremost. Who cares if 4 billion apes don't appreciate quality? Even just 1% of people are capable of creating a huge cultural movement by cottoning on, so focus on that.   I think figures and numbers are pretty meaningless, it's a shame marketing departments are so hung up on them rather than supporting the kind of niches and passionate people that mass markets begin with in the first place.

Just a straight conversion from raw to CineForm is my workflow. Then grade it in Resolve or Premiere as normal. There's not really any in-between step that's necessary.

Also...   All big markets begin as a niche. The whole photographic industry began as a niche.   Trying to capitalise further on a saturated mass market rather than inventing a new one is the number one failing of the consumer electronics industry today.   Apple were designing for a market of 2 when they came up with the iPad - Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ive.

  I get the distinct impression you're upset, not sure why. I suppose calling people who shoot raw video (Peter Jackson, David Fincher, etc.) freaks makes you feel better about the fact you invested in the Nikon D800 partially for outstanding video quality, only to see the 5D Mark III leap up from nowhere and shoot raw.

  Strongly disagree.   The Magic Lantern community and this one on EOSHD isn't just an amateur club. It is read by pros and amateurs alike.   The interest in the raw recording was huge. I have seen the figures John, to be fair you don't know. To say 100 downloaded ML is a bit insane, I don't know where you got that from.   EOSHD figures are:   1.1 million loads of the test footage, 125,000 plays in less than a month. That's just one video.   In that same time the blog had 812,000 visits, up from an average of 500,000 in the slower months leading up to this news.   Small fry? Really?   For me Cinema EOS is the small market. Consumer market is massive.

There are some real opportunists out there, starting an auction bidding at $3k for the Iscorama 54.   I'm a bit concerned on the effect this thread is having on auction bidding.   Would it be a huge loss to the forum if I close this? Looking for opinions.

Stan - my recommendation is not to accept any DHL package and ask Ralf to refund your wire transfer. It isn't worth the risk. If fraud has been committed by Ralf he will face full weight of the law.   To all - Do not use wire transfers. I can't stress this enough. It is as if you've never seen spam email from Nigeria! A seller who only wants Western Union is trouble, full stop.   eBay thread - I'm not going to make a knee jerk decision, let's see how it goes. I'm not 100% pleased with it, that's true. We don't want to hype prices and it isn't an advertising forum or shop. I'm leaning towards stopping it but eBay is a safer trading place than a forum. The thread isn't responsible for pushing prices up - that is more the result of supply and demand. The supply of glass seems to be at an all time low and demand at an all time high. That's not surprising because anamorphic lenses are like gold dust and always have been. Until a manufacturer starts to produce new ones again in large quantities, the prices are going to continue to go up. My advice is to chill out with the auctions. It is not worth having one at ALL COSTS rather than hunting over the long term. It took me 4 years to build my collection and that was part of the enjoyment of it. Buy It Now auctions can offer much better value for money than auctions so I suggest using those instead of bidding. The good ones are short lived so it helps to constantly be aware of what is being listed on eBay.

PROVE THEY HAVE THE GOODS   - Request to see photos of the item being sold with their EOSHD username displayed alongside it, preferably in handwriting on piece of paper so it cannot be faked.   COMMUNICATE   - Check their forum posting history, see if they are new.   Let me know if you need anything from the admin panel - like IP address, etc.   This guy was a new user here, this was his first post. That should be another warning. Only deal with people who have a history of genuine posts and contributions!   I also recommend asking for some form of ID and an address if you are dealing in large sums of money.   I'm going to put a page up with some basic rules. Forums are not eBay so you must be more careful.   Hope anyone who has been stung gets to the bottom of this.

Same guy as on DVXUser I hear.   These things are very rare, but a reminder to be careful. NEVER use wire transfer. Try to close the deal via PayPal or an eBay Buy It Now page. Ask to see eBay feedback or at the very least a photo of the lens with their forum username written on paper alongside it.   This is very easy to do.   Carry on dealing, just use the basic checks.

Some are fickle, consumerism is like that. Some just wanted a product Canon wasn't providing like better than 8bit, for less than $15,000.

If not for Magic Lantern, Canon was in danger of losing countless customers of DSLR video to Blackmagic.   And Sony (FS100)   And Nikon (D5200)   And Panasonic (GH3)

The campaign was driven by Canon’s understanding of its consumers’ imaging needs   Though not ours, obviously.   The campaign, the first from Canon to encompass all consumer and pro product categories   Aimed at pro product categories, based on an understanding of consumers imaging needs? Uh oh.   "We want to inspire and support everyone in taking their ‘next step’, whether it be in photography, shooting video or printing special moments."   Translation: "We want you to upgrade"   Consumer: "But our 550D's are the same as the 2013 models!"   Canon has a strong heritage of supporting users on their imaging journey   In all my time of running EOSHD for the past 3 years, not once has Canon helped me.   Video content sits at the core of the campaign   So not just a niche then.

There's something I'm trying to get my head around as well with the low light stuff.   I think with raw if you take a bright area of your image and boost it in post, no matter the camera ISO, the exposure is rated low (ISO 200 for example) for bright areas. Dark areas will be more like the real ISO 6400.   I think you should try pushing some shadows to get true 25,600.   Try setting the ISO to native, 800 or something. Then do an exposure which is under by 4 stops and evenly lit across the frame.   In post push that 4 stops, and you should get real 25,600. I could be wrong on this though.

Here we go again with more Cinema EOS propaganda from peederj. You're heading to the door, because I am frankly SICK of reading it.   All sensors output raw data at various video frame rates even your iPhone. What the Magic Lantern project proves is that Compact Flash cards and cheap consumer electronics are capable of writing that data internally, without an external recorder.   Yet the $25,000 C500 cannot do this, and doesn't even have an SSD slot. It's a failed product design. A version 0.5 camera.   Needless to say, I'm not targeting EOSHD at people who have money to burn on a C500.   It's very simple...   I'm interested in what gives me the most cinematic image for under $6000, as an ownership prospect not rental.   That isn't the C100 I'm afraid.   C500 isn't a sensible ownership prospect nor does it have a good specs sheet. I was renting I'd go F55 or Epic.
