Canon struck raw, EVF and brighter zoom from XC10 “for cost reasons”
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Will give you a clue... none. Because the camcorder market is dead. And the rest will use their smartphones or existing Canikons. The LX100 has a better chance on the streets. It's small and I still remember the days when all the tourists will using TZ3s and LX2s. Still room for a high end compact. The XC10 isn't compact. -
Canon EOS M3 Review - new sensor, new video quality?
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yes it is, although most people know the drill on that by now right? Here's the first part http://www.eoshd.com/2014/11/shooting-4k-pocket-camera-exceptional-panasonic-lx100/ I still love it. The best small camera by a mile. -
H.265 drag and drop into Edit Ready, you're done. ProRes / H.264 for your editing software. Stills are very good, 13 stop dynamic range and as good in low light as the D7200.

Calculate the predicted rental charges on 3 years of FS7 or C300 Mark II shooting then deduct it from the predicted depreciation value of the cameras in that same time period. I predict the C300 II would lose $6000, the FS7 $4000. If the rental costs exceed that in 3 years then it makes more sense to buy them. Not to mention, buying allows them to be used for your own personal creative work! Lenses hold their value well. A7S a good choice too. But in his situation I'd probably get the FS7, a Mac Pro, a 4K display & spend the rest on Canon lenses and LED lights.

Magic Lantern now working on Canon 70D (both versions)
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Haven't got a 60D but expect it is much better image on the 70D. The 60D has a 20Mb/s SD card bottleneck. The 70D's SD card controller is doubly fast at 40Mb/s... and I find very reliable too. Doesn't seem as on the edge as 1080p raw on the 5D. I expect low light to be a bit better on the 70D too as it's a newer sensor, but not by much. -

I love Dual Pixel CMOS AF... a real shot grabber -

The AF is wonderful. Image isn't far off C100 Mark II at ISO 400 either, but raw baby! -

How'd you come to that conclusion? -
Canon EOS M3 Review - new sensor, new video quality?
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I don't see the point in the NX500. OK if you want to save money, it's fine. A review? Bit pointless. You know the drill. It's the NX1's sensor and codec with a crop and no top bitrate setting, minus some other features as well. -
The convenience of Dual Pixel CMOS AF is now coming to raw video, with Magic Lantern now available for all 70D owners. Read the full article

Better to spend an extra 800 than waste 800 completely! -
Canon EOS M3 Review - new sensor, new video quality?
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Perhaps, but only in the sense that they are all pretty rubbish. Get a NX1. -
(Bonus feature - watch the above video to the end for a shootout between the EOS M3, Sony A6000, Panasonic LX100 and GH2) The EOS M3 features Canon's new flagship 24MP APS-C (Super 35mm) sensor, the flag bearer for future Canon APS-C DSLRs such as the 760D. Now released in Europe and Asia but not in the US, does the M3 rage against the dying of the light or go quietly into the night? More footage and tests Read the full review

Panasonic GH4 firmware update V2.2 due to be released April 22nd
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
That's an OCT 18 mounted on an after-market metal rig. It still doesn't need conversion. You get a working one and adapter from Ciecio7! -

Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Did the article say it was better than the Alexa? Nope. Merely more vertical resolution. I'd say that's quite an achievement for a $1500 camera though and definitely headline worthy. World would be a boring place if we wrote like you kodakmoment. -

You can't record internally at same time as outputting 10bit over HDMI regardless of whether in anamorphic mode or not on the GH4. -
Yeah why are all the new anamorphic lenses inferior to what consumers had in the 70's? What's going on there? The Iscorama wasn't cheap when it came out, but it was accessible for enthusiasts, small and sharp.

LG Digital Cinema Display Review - 4096 x 2160 IPS impresses!
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
What a moronic comment. What's the alternative - spend $10,000 replacing my Canon EF glass with Sony E-Mount, with most of them inferior or not even existing!? -
I don't agree, surprise. I've always said it's both. Take musicians. The moment you press a key on a piano it's about feel, mood, the sound. The melody is just one part of it. Similarly in filmmaking, you press that key - the camera - it has a certain feel, mood, the image. The story is just one part of it. It's important for a musician to evoke an interesting sound and mood. My friend recently bought a really old pipe organ from a flea market. You can't get that feel or mood or way of playing, with a M-Audio USB keyboard. Same goes for cameras and lenses... choose carefully.

LG Digital Cinema Display Review - 4096 x 2160 IPS impresses!

Pushing on the edges isn't part of my everyday usage of the screen See what you mean though. But LG + Philips along with Samsung are THE leader when it comes to the panels. -

Eizo = rip off. The build of the consumer LGs is indeed flakey, or appears so on the surface. This one is different. The 4K DCI build is miles better. MILES. -
External Monitor for Canon 1D C - HDMI Record/No Record
Andrew Reid replied to lafilm's topic in Cameras
SmallHD do nice stuff. Check out the DP4 for small and cheap. I was deeply impressed with the new Sidefinder though - and that without the finder is thin and small too, but really high quality screen. Zacuto EVF is small but pokey-small as a monitor. I don't love it.
