  3. I think the price will decide whether this is a success or not. Priced right with Panasonic's usual feature set, reliability and ease of use, this could well open up the L-Mount to the masses. If not it'll probably be a waste of time.
  4. Yes, that's right. No fan either. The hot shoe is actually a cold shoe. Also, it's much chunkier than previously though to believe IMO but still rather small. For video and for the price, I'd think the FX30 which is only marginally bigger would be a better choice as there are so many video features on it (4k 120fps, for one) that this camera will not have. It's really too bad they didn't go with the flip-up screen; invariably, there are as many or more people wanting the flip-out one. We'll see on the 22nd what this thing is really about.

  6. if 7d2 magic lantern matures, probably it. can do 1080p 60p s35 no alias no moire. the major issue is just like 5d3ml, no realtime high res preview on its own lcd. crop mood is so good for this. I like eos m, 100d too, although ml is not as stable as 650d/700d, but smaller, especially m, with a pancake lens, not much larger than the GoPro 12.

  8. This is a good video summary where they tested various aspects to see what mattered.. However, as someone who actually uses Resolve on a low-end machine where I hit the limitations of it all the time, the two biggest points were: Different parts of Resolve (Edit page, Colour page, Fusion) use different aspects of the computer (CPU, GPU, RAM) Once your machine can edit smoothly on the footage / codec / timeline settings you have, getting a better spec only improves render times but doesn't impact your experience of using it

    c300 og with nano flash 280 mbps I frame 59.94i 1080p is good enough for slow panning. c300 og's stock 50 mbps 23.97p and 29.97p 1080p are not usable for slow panning. I use 59.94p timeline in davinci resolve, and get 60p footage, seems fine.
  10. The rumor site confirmed today that there is no mechanical shutter and the pancake prime is a very slow lens cap lens.

  12. We'll see. The rumor has it as being IBIS, but who really knows. The G100 had that exact same system. Most of the reviews were hard on the G100 because Panasonic had a serious case of putting its head in the sand when it came to AF and massively overpromising with every release. Then when they didn't include proper IBIS, I think the poo hit the fan. Still, that camera sold really well according to Panasonic USA. It's also interesting they replaced it with a G100D which was almost the same. People really wanted a GX85 with PDAF, a flip-out screen and mic jack- that was all they needed to do. In fact that's all what people still want; instead, we're getting a low-light camera without a shutter. My guess is that the problem will be rolling shutter in photo and video. Actually, RS was also a problem on the G100.

Yes, but there were quite a lot of adverse review comments about the level of cropping it used, which probably had an adverse effect on sales (for a vlogging targeted camera needing a wide angle of view). I'm sure the S9 will have at least EIS (which Panasonic do very well). If the new 18-40 zoom lens has OIS that might be enough in a dual-IS combination.
  15. I think as a product, some sort of image stab is going to be important. The G100 didn't have it, but it was quite usable EIS. The conundrum is that it's such a small, light camera, it would be really hard to handhold, but if IBIS adds 200g and bulk to the product, it would make sense to go with EIS. Given the competition and Panasonic's strengths, I think it'll be included (and it'll be up to snuff).
  16. IBIS has been mentioned on l-rumors.com - and personally (given that competition like the a7c ii, ZV-E1 and X100V1 has it) I think it might be a bit suicidal not to include it.

If you want a nice, free, GUI based tool, 'Shutter Encoder' - https://www.shutterencoder.com/ - uses FFMPEG underneath, supports cutting without re-encoding for some codecs (on keyframe boundaries) and is available for Windows, MacOS and Linux. If you want to re-compress the files to reduce the size, it supports ProRes and many others, including optional GPU hardware acceleration for H264/AVC and H265/HEVC. But always check the new files work properly in your editor before you delete the originals... (I don't have any connection with the tool other than being a satisfied user)
  18. Two issues right there for me, not that this camera is really anything that is designed for my needs, but always worth at least a look. As a Nikon Zf user, even with the aftermarket grip by Smallrig, it’s in no way as ergonomically good to use as my Z6ii and when any Z6iii appears, I will move over to those for sure. Unless old Panny Boy throws me a curveball with either a S1R or S1H replacement. But it still leaves me with a lens dilemma that I won’t bore anyone with again, so I will leave it there! This ‘S9’ sounds like the Panasonic love child of the Sony ZVE1 and the Leica Q2?
  19. The word has it that there's a 18-40 and a pancake coming with it. If it does have a proper shutter and IBIS, I'll probably get it, but I need more info. I would have rather had a flip-up screen and no hotshoe though because it's just more fun (like the GX850). If Panasonic doesn't release more pancakes and smaller affordable bodies for M43, there won't be many people going to it. The problem is that cameras like the GM1 were too small to operate with adult hands whereas the GX85 was just big enough. The S9 looks about the same size as a GX85.
  20. When you place clips in a Davinci Resolve timeline you have the option save the used media in the original format (not re-encoded) either complete or split as per the edited clip. When saving the cut clip there is also a choice to add frame handles to both ends of the clip to a selectable length. It can then automatically replace the clips in the timeline with the newly saved trimmed versions. It works for BRAW files as well as standard mov, MP4 etc, but I've not tried it with other raw formats. Certainly saves a lot of storage space and time splitting clips individually. It also gives the opportunity to re-encode the clips before saving them if that is your desire. It's in the file menu under 'Media Management...'

  22. If you have a lot of dead time in your media, the other option is to split the original clips to cut out the good bits. IIRC ffmpeg has an option to split a clip into two pieces at a given timestamp, but there might be other programs that can do this too. This method doesn't re-compress the video and audio stream in the file so there is zero loss of quality.
  23. I hope there are some pretty decent small/light lenses for L mount. With that (lack of a) handgrip, that thing is an ergonomic nightmare for any sort of handheld shooting with a lens over 300g or so. If that size comparison is accurate, adding a handgrip pretty much puts one in a "just buy an S5II which puts an EVF in the little bit of extra vertical height" category. (If it's decent resolution, it could be a dream camera for M mount lenses)
  24. That is probably an internal Panasonic image and already had the "dummy" text when L-Rumors got ahold of it. With "Dummy" most likely indicating the picture is of a non-functioning prototype, rather than a corporate comment on rumor-site users. Doesn't look as small as some people seem to have been hoping. Definitely not in the GM1/5 or even GX85 type leagues. And of course it can't be, with L-Mount being a relatively large mount. NIkon's Z-mount would be similarly limited in body height as it is a bit oversized. E-mount is much smaller as it was intended for APS-C, so their A6000-style bodies can be really short. It apparently has IBIS, and the side flip screen from the S5II.
  25. Apparently, this is the size of the S9, the new l-mount camera which is significantly smaller than the S5ii/G9ii. It looks about 500g which would seem correct as the GM1 was about 202g. So many questions remain though. Will it have IBIS? Will it have a proper shutter? What's the max sync speed? There's a hotshoe on top and I'm guessing a flip out screen rather than a flip up one? Is there a mic jack? Overheating will be an issue, but will it have some limit or not? I like how they wrote L-rumors.com on it with the word "Dummy". I'm not a fan of that site or community, but I go because apparently that's one of the only places. Anyone know of another one?
