Panasonic G7 and Metabones Speed Booster XL hands-on – Super 35mm 4K for cheaper

[pullquote]Comment on the forum[/pullquote]

Canon EF mount Super 35mm 4K (internal) solutions are expensive. Canon’s only current one costs $15,999.

Here is an alternative for a fraction of the price. It’s also great for those who can’t justify spending $3200 on the upcoming Sony A7RII for 4K S35.

Official announcement – Metabones Speed Booster ULTRA

The Speed Booster ULTRA features the latest evolution of optics from Caldwell Photographic USA and is available for E-Mount and Fuji X-mount cameras (to cover APS-C or Super 35mm recording areas).

The new glass brings with it an increase in performance – sharper corners and better contrast. The increase in performance over the original Speed Booster is made possible by the use of cutting edge high index tantalum glass, in 5 elements in 4 groups; the old version of Speed Booster will be phased out.

I currently have a review sample of the ULTRA, I’ll publish some sample images later today!

Officially announced – Metabones Canon EF Speed Booster for Micro Four Thirds and Panasonic GH4

First impressions review

The long awaited active Canon EF mount Speed Booster adapter for Micro Four Thirds is finally here. I have a review sample, currently putting it through a few shoots to see how it performs. This is not the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera version but the general Micro Four Thirds mount adapter, so fully compatible with most Micro Four Thirds cameras including the GH4, but not yet the E-M1 or E-M5 due to the overhanging bodywork directly over the mount on those cameras. Finally you can use all your Canon lenses with full electronic support for aperture control and stabilisation.

Metabones firmware update for Canon EF adapter improves compatibility with Sony A7S

Update on the update: Firmware update app is currently Windows only, Mac version available within the next 24hrs

Metabones have announced a firmware update for their Smart EF Mark IV adapter (E-Mount). This is a must-have update for A7S users who have experienced buggy behaviour with their camera using Canon lenses.

The firmware update is available from Metabones here along with full instructions.

If you have the earlier Mark III version of the adapter the firmware update must be done back at base. To do this users should contact Metabones to arrange the return.

Metabones Speed Booster for Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Mount – Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Edition

speed-booster-2

Along with Philip Bloom and James Miller I have been testing a beta of the first Micro Four Thirds mount Smart EF adapter with Speed Booster from Metabones. Now the final version is available and it will start shipping end of June for $659 at the Metabones site. This version to be released imminently is designed ONLY to fit the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera.

This has the lovely 0.58x glass which turns the 3x crop Blackmagic sensor into a much nicer 1.74x crop, approaching the Super 35mm standard size for cinema.

James has shot some rather lovely footage with it. Do check that out at Philip’s evil rival site to mine 🙂

F0.74 – new Metabones Speed Boosters break boundaries

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/80752459[/vimeo]

Today Metabones release two new Speed Boosters for Blackmagic shooters.

I’ve been using some demo samples for this special review and I’m absolutely stunned.

Metabones and Caldwell Optics have given us a Zeiss / Kubrick / NASA special! These adapters are completely new and purpose designed to fit only the Blackmagic cameras. Offering super bright apertures as fast as F0.74 and finally some great wide angle possibilities, I put both new adapters through their paces…

The ultimate Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera lens – Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 with Speed Booster

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/76881206[/vimeo]

I would really love to see how this lens does against a $47,000 + tax cinema lens like the Optimo 15-40mm T2.6 because I honestly think it would come close.

Blackmagic must share a similar philosophy, because the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera gives an image that in many ways exceeds the $15,000 Canon C300 especially when paired with the Metabones Speed Booster.

There’s more from EOSHD on the Speed Booster for Micro Four Thirds here, and for E-mount here

The Speed Booster has come to Micro Four Thirds where it turns the smaller sensor into a Super 35mm / APS-C equivalent – the cinema standard. I have been testing the Leica R, Nikon G and Contax Yashica Speed Boosters for Micro Four Thirds for a while now.

Here’s the verdict!
