Shooting 4K for 2K on the Panasonic GH4 plus my pre-review short film

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/95217701[/vimeo]

My full review of the Panasonic GH4 (final retail unit) is coming next week. Until then I am enjoying Philip Bloom’s views on the camera here!

A big thanks to B&H Photo & Video in the US for shipping internationally a GH4 unit with no recording limits, I got it before it was even available in Europe. Delivery took just 2 days! Impressed! Also thanks to Susanna, the star of my video above shot in Berlin.

Exclusive: here is the first app to resample Panasonic GH4 4K 8bit to 10bit 4:4:4

A few days ago Thomas Worth of Rarevision (5DToRGB and RAWMagic) asked me for some original files from the GH4 so he could develop an experimental app he had in mind. The result is an embryonic new command-line app for the Mac, which takes 8bit 4:2:0 4K H.264 files from the GH4 and resamples them to 10bit 4:4:4 in 2K DPX format.

Calling all colourists – Grade Panasonic GH4 4K ProRes next to Arri Alexa 2K ProRes

gh4-3

The GH4’s internally recorded 4K files can be converted to a chunky 2K 10bit ProRes 4444 image which grades extremely well.

To test this theory I call on colourists to have a go at it.

Arri Alexa ProRes files are available from their FTP server. Details below.

Why KineRAW MINI could be your next camera

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/72646025[/vimeo]

Thanks to Michel and Ludwig at HD Videoshop in Berlin for the test unit. Essential primer details on the MINI are here.

The KineRAW Mini is a very cool option in the emerging raw market. With an almost identical range of features and the same 4K Super 35mm CMOS sensor found in the larger, more expensive KineRAW S35, this baby version has a form factor I absolutely love. It is not just small but light as well – very suited to the kind of art-film-on-location shoots I love.

EOSHD takes a brief hands-on look at what the camera offers.

2.5k CinemaScope anamorphic raw on the 5D Mark III

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/66574661[/vimeo]

Get the EOSHD Anamorphic Shooter’s Guide for a comprehensive guide to anamorphic lenses, which ones to use, how to get them and how to shoot

Download the 2.5k 2560×1280 Vimeo file and playback on a 2.5K or 4K display for best results

Download a pack of DNG frames from the original raw files to judge quality

The spec sheet is impressive. 14bit linear bayer raw is sub-sampled from a 6K sensor, giving 1280 lines of extremely clean resolution with an anamorphic compliant 4:3 aspect ratio.

This is in a similar league to the image quality of the Sony F35 (Superman Returns, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland) which cost $250,000 just 5 years ago.

Download sample 2K DNG 24p frame from the hacked 5D Mark III and see the image quality for your own eyes!

Recently Magic Lantern had the breakthrough discovery of beautiful pin sharp 2K sensor feed in raw format on the 5D Mark II and 5D Mark III.

This completely turns our understanding of DSLR video image quality on its head. Why is the video quality so far from what the camera is really capable of?

Magic Lantern discover 2K raw DNG function on 5D Mark II and III

Magic Lantern have uncovered a DNG output in live view on the 5D Mark II and 5D Mark III. At the moment it doesn’t record video but it is expected to be capable of 24fps. The Live View Raw Buffer on the 5D Mark II allows for a 2040 x 1428 DNG stream, and the team are researching the same feature on the 5D Mark III.
