New Tamron 20mm FE f/2.0 AF

Tamron just announced an AF version of their 20mm for FE mount. Why is it great?

Well imagine this: you get a 20mm F/2 on your A7RIII that is light and small with great low light and that should be perfect on a gimbal, and at the push of a button you switch to S35 mode giving you a 30mm equivalent, close to the famous 35mm. And since it is digital, you do not need to rebalance your gimbal at all nor changing lens.

Amazing. FF-S35 mode is really great to allow light travel with 1 or 2 primes. I really hope that they release a 18mpx A7S III with S35 mode, with 4K60P 10 bits and A7RIII AF this would kill the segment.

These new third part lenses like the Samyang/Rokinon AF line is really changing the game and can make the A7 line relevant to a much larger audience.
I have raved about the A7 in plenty of reviews. The biggest negative have always been lack of good but affordable AF lenses to complement adapted glass.

But lately thats all changed thanks to these third party lenses and the new cheap but awesome Sony 85mmm f1.8.
It has also pushed the used prices down so I can pick a used Zeiss 35mm or a new Samyang 35mm.
Same goes for the Zeiss 55mm vs AF 50 and Sony 85mm vs Batis 85mm.

And now there is also a wide angle. Perfect.

It doesn't look great for video usage:

"The performance in video is not so great in term of AF

  • AF noisy
  • AF often hunting
  • AF motor noise even in manual focus"

Damn, what the hell Tamron... releasing a lens for a camera line (A7S, ....) that has a good focus on video and making it shit for video ...
