Panasonic GH5 starts shipping in 3 days. How's the 180fps slow-mo quality?

Thanks saw that video today. Still not sure what I should do with my files though.. Is transcoding the 150mbs 10. Bit 422 4K footage to prores hq overkill or is standard prores too little?

There's  more info in the article than just the video, maybe this helps ...

"The takeaway ... Wolfcrow ...

For 8-bit 4:2:0, shoot 100 Mbps
For 10-bit 4:2:2, shoot 400 Mbps internally, or
For 10-bit 4:2:2, shoot 880 Mbps Prores HQ externally"

The FHD 100mbps might be interesting also, (maybe no need to shoot 4K first) its reported to be better than the similar FHD settings, FHD 100 Mbps in the GH4, both having the same low compression, compared to say C4K.  Of course the firmware updates may still mean getting better FHD output through the 4K -->> FHD route.

1080p 10 bit 4:2:2 intra at 200Mbps could be great. Prores HQ at 1080p is 220Mbps. It all depends on the implementation of the codec. Let's hope it's better than the 200mbps 8 bit 1080p intra on the GH4.

Cinema5d took down its gh5 review?   At last, they did something decent for the community....  On another note "wolfcrow" has a great video on youtube talking about the GH5, 10-bit and the release codec.. His conclusions make much sense

You can't reassign the record button?

Yes, you can reassign the record button to lots of other buttons,....but you can't reassign it to the shutter button....even when you're in movie mode----unless someone knows better than I.

On the Panasonic G85 you can use the shutter button to snap to focus and then record video in video mode. Then, in the other modes the shutter is dedicated to photos and the little red button near it is video---which you can assign to other buttons as well

But Sony, apparently, won't allow you to program the video start/stop to the shutter button--even in dedicated video mode.

I hope I'm wrong---someone. Enlighten me.

Yes, I forgot about FHD firmware update.  Using Wolfcrows calculations, it's an even lower compression rate than the existing 1080p 8 bit 420, could be very nice indeed😊.

Hey guys just quick question with Gh5 Slomotion capabilities

can one record at 180fps and have it as 180fps file or does GH5 confronts it automaticly to 25fps or 30?

I imagine that with VBR on the GH5 it as well conforms in-camera to whatever rate you were shooting in (24, 25, 30). Not sure how this affects anything you want to do with Twixtor, because you have sequential control in post to make it any sort of clip and speed all you want.

Hi Andrew I'm curious how likely you think it is to ship this week, and if you ordered directly from Panasonic? I ordered from BNH and am hoping to pick it up before a shoot but they seem to think it won't start till the 30th.

Noice! Now, I haven't pre-ordered anything anywhere, so tough luck, but I usually get my way if I keep my eyes opened and lines out.

Let me know if you find a channel in EU ;)

I only preordered mine like 10 days ago in the UK and wouldn't really mind having it sooner, especially since I have to send off GH4 for repairs. If I see an opportunity to get one earlier elsewhere, might easily cancel my order.

Not very optimistic though, seeing as I still haven't received GX85 I ordered back in December from a vendor that actually listed it as in "stock" :|

Keep an eye on UK Digital, Mundus and Wöltje listed at: https://geizhals.eu/panasonic-lumix-dmc-gh5-schwarz-gehaeuse-a1558055.html?hloc=at&hloc=de&hloc=pl&hloc=uk&hloc=eu . From the G80 release I believe they were the first ones to sport a few units. I probably have the best chance again picking up one from the local A-S Elektro, they don't ship, it's pick-up only. More places in town like it with some fair odds, like with the E-M1 Mark II was the case (actually didn't end up buying one... for now). Actually think the E-M1 Mark II was for sale two days earlier in The Netherlands, so maybe also keep an eye on here: https://tweakers.net/product/537687/panasonic-lumix-g-dmc-gh5/ . For people in Switzerland or close-by, keep an eye on: https://en.toppreise.ch/index.php?search=gh5&sRes=OK , also, I believe somewhere someone dropped a hint that Panasonic has some % off until the end of the month or something? If the situation applies to you, maybe worth checking into (-- ah, over here , 2906 CHF (~ 2699 EUR) incl. Leica lens, battery grip & audio unit, not too bad).

[..]

Letting you know: https://www.foto-mundus.de/aktionen/panasonic-gx800-gh5/23772/panasonic-lumix-dc-gh5-12-60mm-f3.5-5.6-asph.-power-o.i.s.?c=639 ('Sofort versandfertig' - 'Ready to ship'), seems they do have an international shipping policy: https://www.foto-mundus.de/versandkosten-bezahlmethoden . That said. Cyberport is reporting (still) that the expected stock status is 23.3 , so probably tomorrow we should see more widespread availlability.

- Upd. And gone! But they still have a 14-140mm kit, which I was unaware of was a thing: https://www.foto-mundus.de/detail/index/sArticle/23773/sCategory/639

Thanks!

Indeed, haven't seen this combination anywhere else :o

I'd like to get a body only though. Probably should call some stores in London, see if they have have any locally.

Nice, it's like these companies are starting to learn how to roll out products on time (or atleast to announce them with a realistic roll-out date).

Yes, that's really surprising as I actually ordered mine less than 2 weeks ago.. So couldn't be far up the preorder queue and Jessops is one of the biggest UK photography retailers, so there must have been lots of preorders.

On the other hand, though, the GX85 affair has been ridiculous.. Ordered mine at the end of December, still waiting! The vendor says Panasonic keeps screwing with them, unable to fulfil the backlog for 3 months. Maybe all the resources went into the launch of GH5 ;)
