  1. Last night I was looking on Vimeo at GX7 videos to see what other people were producing. For the most part it all seemed very casual, not much good stuff in there. But then I came across this: First of all you should know that I've been shooting with my GX7 for almost a year now and I've messed around with the camera settings and resultant footage loads. So I pretty much know GX7 footage when I see it. The video above looks completely different to anything I've seen previously.I remember a phrase Andrew used in one of his videos regarding the BMPCC, "The camera has a very filmic response to mid-tones". And I guess this is the only phrase I can use to quantify what makes this footage look different. If you look at the tags on the video above you will see a mention of "Tiffen Ultra Contrast 5". So I did a little more research and it seems these things had their hayday a couple years ago around the time when the GH1/2 and Canon rebels were popular. These days some people still use them even for high end cameras like the RED. Here is the description from Tiffen itself: I quite like the look that diffuser filters give and it sounds like the Low Contrast filter will give some of that look along with the softened contrast. Does anyone here have any experience with these and can make recommendations?
  2. I'm not talking about 4K downscaled - just native 1080. Obviously the GH4 has higher bitrates and ALL-I, but I could swear the stuff I'm seeing from the GX7 has less moire and/or aliasing than GH4HD, and is possibly a tad sharper too? I can't find any direct comparisons online. Does anyone have any experience or an opinion on this?
  3. Good Day! I'm new to the site and new to video work, but I've been lurking around the forums and Review Articles for a while now, trying to figure out what camera I should pick. While totally new to serious videography, I've been doing photography and very light video on the side for about 6 years, so I wouldn't say I'm blind to the more enthusiast thresholds of acceptable quality. With that in mind, I've narrowed it down to two models. Well... one. Two. Maybe just one. Possibly two. GX7. Or GH3. Currently I'm heavily leaning towards the GX7 as: - I assume focus peaking for someone that isn't trained in the art of manual focusing would be nothing short of magical(?). - I will not be needing high quality external audio (for the foreseeable future) (I'll probably mostly be doing artsy montages with music on top,heh...). But I've seen the GH3 recommended over the GX7 for video quite a few times because of: - Bitrate - Codec I have read Mr. Reid's (predominantly positive) thoughts on the GX7 and that strongly weighed into me currently leaning towards it. My question is: Has anyone who has tried both the GX7 and a more codec-competent (higher bitrate) solution ever been strongly frustrated with the former at any point? Like going "THAT WAS THE PERFECT SHOT! GOD HIMSELF PARTED THE SKIES AND UNLEASHED THE MOST HEAVENLY RAYS OF LIGHT THAT DUCK HAS EVER SEEN. YOU HAD - ONE JOB! " when you came home to realize that the water ripples in your perfect shot created the occasional blocky codec artifact? I guess my question can mostly be boiled down to "Bitrate Vs. Focus Peaking". I hope it isn't overly redundant. Any advice and personal input would be really really appreciated. Like... ...this much > [ ]
  4. We shot this music video with my Lumix GX7 after comparing the image quality with other Canon cameras that we had available. Samyang lenses were used with a EF adapter.
  5. Hi all, I'm looking to get more into video- some short films, some video work- nothing serious, and I don't need the absolute best quality. I just want a decent bitrate, minimal rolling shutter/moire/etc., decent low light performance, etc.- something that's good enough where the quality of my videos are distracting because they're bad enough to be noticeable to the average person. The GH4 seems like a huge step up in video compared to the GH3, but It's like twice as expensive, and I can't see myself using 4K (I'm assuming that would require a more powerful computer to edit, hard drives to deal with the extra data, better memory cards- all things I'm not willing to invest in at this point). I will probably stick with 1080p, maybe one step up, but definitely not 4k. Given, I'm weighing my options between the GH4, GH3, and GX7 (which I read is actually better than the GH3 for video). I was considering the Blackmagic pocket, but there's too many quirks for me to want to deal with. I would jump on the OMD EM5, but the quality isn't there. I hate to buy a camera during these years of seemingly the most growth the camera industry will see for video, but this summer I must upgrade. Any advice/words or other models I haven't mentioned?   6. Hi everyone, I just wanted to share with you a quick ISO test I did yesterday with a 5d2, a gx7 and the kind owner of the gx7 :). Knowing the gh4 sensor will be similar to the gx7 one I think what follows is promising Before you ask I don't know why there is so much difference in the exposure: maybe different lens transmission or different factory sensitivity calibration. Viewing this test in the monitor surprised me so much I wanted to reshot everything, convinced that I had done something wrong.   7. Hi, So i'm a Canon 5D Mark III owner and i'm looking for a smaller compact camera as a travel camera, B cam and for street photography. I mainly do video, so video features and quality is important but stills is equally important for personal projects if i'm not taking my Canon out. I've narrowed my choice down to two options - the Oly EM-10 and the Pany GX7. As far as i'm aware the picture quality (in stills) for both cameras is similar. However the GX7 has a 1/8000s mechanical shutter and a silent electronic shutter (which i'm not sure the EM10 has) and I do like the tilting EVF. The EM10 however has that fantastic IBIS (3 axis not 5 but footage shows it works almost as well). The only thing that is disappointing is the 30p restriction and the video quality/options aren't up to par with the GX7. Can anyone offer me any advice on which they think is a better choice? Particularly if you own or have used either of these cameras (or even the similar EM-5/EM-1) please share your thoughts/experiences. Thanks!
  8. Ok to start us off, let me show you a comparison I made between the Olympus PEN E-P5 and the Panasonic GX7 I was wondering if anyone has anything similar for the OMD EM1. I'm really considering getting one in the future because of IBIS, but the EP5's video quality was such a huge letdown (it looked like old camcorder footage) that Im skeptical about if the EM1 can be that much better.

    GM1 video quality?

    GM1 video quality. With the Panasonic GM1 having the same sensor and processor as the GX7 I would assume that they would have identical video image quality at the same settings. The GM1 doesn’t have 60 fps, which is presumably down to heat. But at 24 frames a second it should be the same. Video samples from the GX7 that I have seen seem to be pretty much on par with the GH3, however samples from the GM1 on YouTube seem to be lower in quality. Less detail and obvious aliasing on diagonal lines. Is this due to the settings used by the testers, or how they have uploaded the video? Or could it be due to the automatic corrections being done for the GM1kit lens? Or could Panasonic have artificially lowered the quality for some reason?
