If this camera had come with internal electronic ND and global shutter then this entire forum would be up and on their way to the underwear drawer walking like that Honda robot.

Comparison is the thief of joy when it comes to creative tools.
Most cameras these days are a victim of comparison.
If we all stop comparing the choices, life becomes much more simple.
Buy what you can afford and be happy 🙂

To virtue signal that he isn’t a gear pimping shill, he’s declining to review a camera that he doesn’t rate ?
Surely the best way of doing that would be to do a review and actually state that he doesn’t rate it IN THE FUCKING REVIEW.
You know, like someone who actually reviews gear rather than just blindly promotes it would do.
Another twat in a hat.

Somehow all this camera does is make my A74 feel more valuable…

That doesn't match the usual style (FX3 is more expensive than A7S III, FX30 is more expensive than A6700) - and if $2,500 is MSRP for A7 IV, selling the cine version for around $200 more is right in line with those other models.
If I were choosing between A7 IV and FX2, FX2 would win hands-down. I'd definitely spend $200 for the flippy EVF. But then I might have my head checked because the Z6 III + Sony FE adapter would still cost less, use any Sony lenses, and record 6K full sensor width video internally with decent RS (and with a raw option!) - and going from 24 to 33 megapixels for still photos is... 🤷♂️
(Looking for a B Cam to FX6 that can also take some nice still photos, it's totally fine and people aren't crazy for buying it - but it's just not the choice that I would make right now)

The other thing that seems interesting with this release is that it seems to suggest that Sony don't have a lot of other new bodies in the pipeline. If they do, this release would seem to be an attempt to grab cash from people who are still willing to buy the older sensor and will be annoyed when cameras with the new sensor are released.
Otherwise, if Sony have a bunch of shiny new mirrorless cameras coming soon and supporting better-than-4k recording, etc, why release this one now? The competition is releasing cool mirrorless bodies with superior capabilities and Sony is re-releasing a camera from 2022, but stuffed into a different body. If they keep sitting on these models for another year, we might see the production pendulum swing back to Canon (or Nikon, if they write "RED" on some upcoming mirrorless model and make no other changes from one of their existing cameras).

Jumping the gun makes a lot more sense than Chris/Jordan being actually critical of Sony. 😅

I ended up redoing the balance on the crane today. I was trying to do a vortex shot or 360 spin. However the gimbal wouldn't do it, really struggled once the camera was almost vertical.
I did try increasing the motor strength and all that did was give it a bad case of the shakes. So i had to watch some vids concerning vortex mode. Seems like i had the camera too low in / on the mount. It seemed to work fine in pf and L mode Once it got close to vertical it was struggling. Once i rebalanced the gimbal and moved the camera lens up and inline with the roll axis or that's where it ended up after rebalancing, It seems much improved and would perform a vortex spin. The lens is actually a little above the back axis however it seems to work ok.
I can get to pretty much all the modes on the gimbal except vortex mode, the easiest way for me so far is to access vortex mode is from the zhiyun app on the phone, If i have managed to do it from the gimbal its been more good luck than good management, i'm sure i'll figure it out eventually... Once i get a bit more comfortable with this mode i'll try underslung or upside down and play with that for a bit. I have developed a tendency to work on one thing at a time otherwise it all goes pear shaped pretty quickly.
I have noticed that the e-m1 breaks long shoots up into segments, roughly 3 gig sized files. I had heart palpitations when i noticed that although in resolve it seems to play fine. So no need for a defibrillator just yet.

Ok I bought the C500 mkII. Can't wait to create the first project with it. First tests the AF is so much smoother then my S5II, maybe not faster, but it feels more natural. As does the image. The dynamic range is not crazy better over an S5 or S5II it seems. The highlight rolloff seems smoother though. The internal Nd's are fun too.

I still have my G7 -- I got rid of my GH1, nice though it was back in the day, but kept this little camera; the simplicity of using it remains an attraction. This was my first camera test with it:

"Best" is pretty subjective.
If autofocus is the main thing that you want, then Sony's is the industry leader, followed closely by Canon. Fuji's has been mostly OK for me, but it definitely doesn't seem as magic as Sony/Canon.
Most of the other stuff is going to be a matter of personal opinion. If you have a local camera shop and they sell both, your best bet is to go try both of them in person.
But both cameras are going to be completely usable for vlogging, interviews, event coverage, or whatever else you want to do. They're both very nice and with much better specs than what a lot of us were using as high-end cameras 10 years ago.

Having used both professionally, I'd go FX30 all day. The XS-20 is a fun photography camera, that does video pretty well too. It's just not quite up for pro level work in my opinion. The image is really good, the size is fun, and the color is pretty good too. It's kind of fiddly though, lacks a good selection of custom buttons, overheats a lot, struggles with autofocus a bit and has the SD card in the battery compartment, which is something I personally don't enjoy.
While not being maybe "as fun" as the XS-20, the FX30 is more of a workhorse. Decent color, duel native ISOs, integrated Sony cinema features, solid autofocus, good cooling, easily riggable form factor and the list goes on. The major con is lack of a EVF, but I rarely use built in EVFs, so that doesn't bother me.
Basically if I'm choosing a family camera for stills and some video, I'd go the XS-20. For professional video work, the FX30 is a much more reliable choice.

And do, but mostly because I think the footage just looks better than the 4k.
My A7RV will shoot 8k but never even tried video on it. Or my Nikon, even though the 4k out of the Zf is supposed to be pretty good.

Cropping in post. That’s what I see and like about 8k.
8k for the sake of 8k though, not interested.
Same for me with stills and high megapixel cameras. Some say they don’t need 50-100mp and I don’t either, not for the sake of having more, but I do like it because it allows me more reach from smaller or less lenses. I can carry a single 28-105 and ditch the 24-70 + 70-200 combo.

eatstoomuchjam reacted to John Matthews in Panasonic Lumix G7 vs. S5II, used as camcorders
The limitations are definitely there. We've seen so many overhyped minor improvements—most of which can be overcome with solid technique.
Take 10-bit vs. 8-bit, for example. I’ve seen endless comparisons on the topic, but none of them really sell me on the concept. Sure, I’ll shoot in 10-bit if it's available—why not—but do I actually need it? Did I really need to upgrade just for that?
Then there’s 32-bit audio. Again, I might use it—but mostly out of laziness. It’s not something I need.
IBIS is trickier. It seems practical, especially since most alternatives involve adding weight. But these days, nearly every YouTube video uses a camera with IBIS, and honestly, the look is getting stale. It still beats shaky footage, sure, but it’s become the norm when it should be more of a “just in case” feature.
Continuous AF in video? Cameras now focus faster than I ever could at f/1.2—but then again, why are we even shooting video at f/1.2? With all the AI, it feels like cameras are making more and more decisions for us—too many, in my opinion. You look at the screen and it’s all over the place: body, face, eye, face again, back to body, airplane, cockpit, no—face again, someone else's body, then the eye. Is this really what we want?
And what about viewing limitations? The human eye maxes out around 300 dpi—when you’re young. I still don’t see the point of 8K. Plus, where are we actually watching this content? I’d guess 90% of the time it’s on a screen smaller than 20 cm. Who’s noticing the detail on that? As for audio, there has been progress—people are using earbuds more, and they sound far better than the tiny speakers we used to rely on.
Maybe when you put it all together, it is an improvement. But here we are in 2025—ten years after the G7 launched—and I’ve learned how to work around most of its limitations. Sometimes, knowing the basics still takes you further than all the latest tech. I guess I shouldn't spend so much on camera gear- let the noobs and pros do that.

People might laugh at me, but I don't care. I've been doing some walk-around filming with my G7 and 9mm Leica versus my S5ii and the kit lens. I'm absolutely dumbfounded how little the differences are.
Here are my settings:
Panasonic Lumix G7 - 4k 25fps (EOSHD ProColor Settings, with minor tweaks), super-fast stabilization in Final Cut (InertiaCam- smoothing (.1), continuous video AF on with it's small box in the center (yes, that's right and it didn't really hunt), A Mode, Auto ISO, handheld only, AWB
Panasonic Lumix S5II - 4k 25fps (Stadard profile), no stabilization in post (but had IBIS on), continuous AF (mode 2), small box in the center, A Mode, Auto ISO, handheld only, AWB
I kid you not, the images were very similar, minus the color which seemed better on the G7 to my eye. After stabilization, there was little difference.
Here are some stills:
It would appear the 2015 G7 is still the little engine that could. It weighs a whopping 540g less than the S5II and kit lens. I could add the 14-140, the 25 f/1.4 and perhaps a recorder or mini tripod for that difference. This is where M43 needs to go in the future: small, excellent value, with great features like 4k, PDAF, IBIS, 10 bit h.265, with a proper shutter and hot shoe. Even the previous generation(s) from 2015-2018 have so much to offer.

And didn't Panasonic quite literally just invite Andrew to review a camera, but he turned them down? It's a weird time to make that accusation. 😃
