  1. Recently lost a full time contract because of covid. Can't sell my gear because it's pretty strict here. Currently looking for ways / ideas to earn during these times.  Might be time to create content during lockdown

Yeah I think Cinema 5d really f'ed up with their dynamic range testings on it. The Pocket 6k is way overlooked image wise. It really goes toe to toe with almost any camera out there.

So what's the verdict if someone want's to get a BM cam? P4K or P6K?

  3. Been thinking about this for a park event on Friday but don't really know how to set this up. I'm gonna use a GH5s on a tripod.  I'm thinking of buying an Elgato HD60s for live streaming to FB or Youtube but I dont think my laptop has the battery capacity of more than an hour of streaming so I'm looking at other options where the GH5s or other cams can stream directly. Is this possible? I have a Ninja V if that helps. I thought I can use the Panasonic app at first but can't record audio on that. Thanks in advance to any recommendation :)

I remember a master trick I learned from a YT channel (I think it was Erik Ivar Persson) for perfect dual focus on the fly:

If we want to focus on a subject, say 3 meters away, we will put the lens taking lens completely wrong, in this case to infinity in order to get a pronounced bokeh on the subject. I remember lighting a bright object at that point of the subject (keys with a flashlight) and getting the bokeh at the desired focus distance. At that time I played with the anamorphic focus and that bokeh changed from vertical to horizontal, passing through a small intermediate point that was round. That is the desired focus point of the anamorphic block. Once in it, we corrected the taking as if it were single focus. It is an easy and fast method that helped me a lot.

Dou you remember this anamorphic short? What's happened with his channel?

    883c3e53c6f29801969e9c95edaf425c.jpg

    So is this correct?:

    1. Get the bokeh to perfectly round by rotating anamorphic lens

    2. Focus the taking lens

For me, it's also rotating the anamorphic lens to something that doesnt look too distorted then fiddling with the taking lens. What I also realized is that your taking lens' sharpness will dictate how sharp or how focused your shots will be. I have a Helios and thought that the Sankor 16c can't focus. But I tried a Takumar and I got nicer, sharper shots

So, yes, I got it in the end. Have no time for tests right now, but I used a CFast card, the Hawk-Woods NFP adapter and the Lens Regain and everything seemed ok.

First of all, can the Lens Regain be connected electronically to the Pocket 4K camera?

The 12-100mm is a disappointment. Wanted it to be my run and gun lens but it is unusable. Very disappointing, wish BM could offer some kind of profile for popular m43 lenses.  I am not sure about other lenses, but with a performance like that this is definitely NOT an m43 camera.

I will try Canon EF and Viltrox adapters in the next few days.

Why is the 12-100 disappointing? I've also been thinking of getting one for run & gun and lessen the time to switch lenses for travels

Start at the end goal and work backwards, seeking evidence.

For example, if the end goal is to get a job, call employers and ask to speak to their hiring manager and ask them if it's something they care about when hiring.

If you want to learn to think differently, find who your lecturers would be and call them, asking them if their classes will teach you to think differently from the other classes on offer.  You will quickly understand if they're full of shit or not.

One way that is guaranteed to teach you to think differently is to find some film people you like (producers, directors, cinematographers, etc) who produce radically different work, call all of their offices begging for an internship where you work for free and get to shadow these people.  Spend a few months with each, trying to figure out what they do and why and helping them.  Not only will that give you access to people you know think differently to each other, but if you're any good you'll probably get offered jobs with people you gelled with.

Be clear on your goals and work backwards.

Thanks for this, this is great advice. I'm gonna try to apply this more whenever I get stuck on where I want to advance my career

Don't dude me mate. We didn't raise pigs together.

I would actually consider it very cheap if it was actually designed to work with my gh5s. Once again, I am fine with it and would buy it again but, as a customer, I don't understand why me and some others have to justify ourselves to outsiders for just reminding past promised deadlines to Alex.

Anyway, Alex's answer is fine to me. He is trying his best. Just what I wanted to hear.

Can't you use the lut on the GH5s? I just don't use it during filming on my GH5s but I still use the lut via Premiere. You still need to adjust it but it still works fine. Same experience if you use it on GH5 footages.

    Hi,

I’m considering Masters degree in Film-making (Cinematography or VFX compositing). Is it worth it? What are your personal takes?

Backstory:  I’ve recently completed bachelor’s degree (undergraduate) in film-making. It gave me a wide yet superficial understanding of cinema as practice. Arguably, everything that I’ve learnt could have been found online, at a lower price and without wasting 3 years of life. But the BA diploma gave the technical skills that enabled me to find a job, so i will not complain about the humongous debt (UK based student here).

Next year, i want to do masters in Cinematography or Compositing believing that:

    1. Masters will give me the diploma recognised by employers, thus better job opportunities.
    2. learn new technical skills, but more importantly - different ways of seeing.
    3. build up portfolio.

So far so good, but in reality:

    • People say that the only masters degree worth doing in Cinematography is at the NFTS (and Compositing at the Escape Studios) and that other MA degrees are superficial waste of time (which is how i feel about my BA).
    • Masters degrees are very expensive in the UK.
    • How much you learn really depends on you not the education. Majority of resources are online and cinema equipment is getting more affordable every year.

What are your opinions on Masters in Film-making? Are these essential in finding a successful job, or you would rather go straight to work? Is the knowlegde that you get worth the high price tag? Are less prestigiuos universities not worth the hussle? Would love to hear opinions from EU and beyond!

I suggest you go straight to work. I know Escape studios but what they offer can be learned on the job. I worked as a compositor out of college with just my portfolio, and a BS degree. You learn so much more from your Seniors and your colleagues while working in the industry, plus you'll get paid to learn and to build out your reel. So for me, you should get a job in production first, then rethink if you really want to do your Masters

  9. Since you're willing to invest on a monitor, I've been looking at this the Predator X34p. I dont know about your needs but that's the ultrawide I've been researching to pair up with the monitor that I currently have - Dell P2715q a nice budget 4K monitor that I plan to rotate vertically when I get an ultrawide. For the PC build, this was my reference - http://www.thesagery.com/builds/ since I can choose between med - high end depending on what my needs.

It may also be to appease the algorithm in another way; if they have different types of content then they can be penalised if everyone isn't interested in everything. If you never watch a channels vlogging content but always watch their proper content then the algorithm just sees that as you not being as interested as you were before, and in a puppy like attempt to please you it shows you content that you always watch all the way through, and may not show you their content again for a while ( or ever again ). How it is working is conjecture on my part, based on reports from a few people who have talked about it - Linus Sebastian is pretty open about how it all works on the WAN show, but also knowing how "algorithm" and "machine learning"  is used as pixie dust in the tech world to make pretty old concepts seem magical and worthy of investment.

It could be solved if there weren't so many people trying to game the system, it's probably hardest to game a system based on your watch metrics rather than what the content is purporting to be. Until an AI is smart enough to understand and categorise the content itself then it'll just continue to be a cat and mouse game.

Thanks for this. I actually work as a software developer and know a bit about machine learning and all i can say is that it's definitely not fool proof. Without seeing much of the parameters that they're basing their algorithm on, then a youtuber can only do a trial and error method to see what works. But then youtube can suddenly change their conditions which sucks

I know it was mentioned before, but the Z-Cam E2 seems to be a very serious competitor to the BMPCC cameras, and the reviews by Kai and Look were very favourable without many real down-sides.  There's a newer model IIRC called the E2-C which is cheaper, and may be similar to the P4K?  If you haven't already, maybe have a look at the spec sheet and a few reviews?

Yeah also recommended the Z-Cam E2. I haven't tried it though but looks like it's also a good cam + 4K 120fps without crop. E2-C is a cheaper version but I don't think it can record at 4K with 120fps. I think one downside is that it doesnt work with Viltrox speedboosters so you have to spring for the more expensive Metabones to adapt EF lenses

    Waterloo!

I contacted again today the local BM distributor and have NO clue at all when they are bringing P4K to the country.

20 October I am starting a project. The plan was to use a new camera (or else the producer will rent a C200).

What other camera with similar ISO performance can you suggest with use with EF lenses?

Maybe ZCam E2 with speedbooster if BMs are not available. Would also suggest GH5s + speedbooster

Hi, I usually make night shots in the night, in the forest or large areas in the villages where people dance. I always use a small led lamp on my GH5 camera. Often it is insufficient and I need more light. I'm thinking about a LED Front Lamp to put on my head. I noticed a lot of lamps of each invoice but for trek and running. I don't know if it can be useful for me too. I need a front lamp with zoom and with a large floodlight. Does anyone here have experience in this regard? Maybe I do a stupid thing to buy and use a LED Front Lamp? I found some LED Front Lamps with 6000K but I could add a filter to make the light a little warmer. I always travel alone and I also need to optimize weight. Thanks for some precious news.

Maybe go for a head lamp / head light - the one that runners use when they trail run. Those are pretty light

I frequently use the Oly 12-100 on my GH5s, where I use it most of the time and really like this combo. I put it on one of my P4Ks with a shoulder rig today and was surprised at the difference. The Oly 12-100 shows visible distortion on straight lines (think door frames) both in the middle and on the edges of the lens. I will have to use this combo more to decide for sure, but at the moment, I am leaning toward saying this is not a good combination.

Only at the 12mm? Does the distortion disappear if you zoom in a little?

The Olympus 12-100 is a very versatile lens for photo and video work. I don't know the exact focus throw, but it seems to be around 90 degrees. The Rokinon Cine DS line of lenses are reasonably priced and have about a 150 degree focus throw.

Olympus 12-100 is great but it's only at F4. I use the 35-100 f2.8 at events and it's still pretty noisy if there's not enough light. I would suggest the Sigma 50-100 or Canon 70-200 with Speedbooster but the drawback is that they're pretty heavy

Here's a quick one of my current setup. Nikon Z6,  Smallrig cage, and Monfrotto arm with a SmallHD Focus monitor. Recently got the Monfrotto arm and I love it, very sturdy and easy to adjust.

Is the manfrotto connected to a cage?

    This is true 100%.

So if anyone cares mainly for H264/H265, maybe an i9 9900K is the best solution.

If anyone cares for pure computational power (or even Red raw) then a Ryzen 3900X is maybe the best platform right now (7nm, PCIe 4.0, more cores/threads).

I am looking for such a Ryzen build, but I have one verys serious problem. Can't find the 3900X anywhere! And when it is available, is around 600€.

I think a Ryzen 3700x is already sufficient, then move budget to gpu, ram, nvme, ssd
