All steps in the right direction 3 years after launch. Im really crossing my fingers that the EM1 mark 3 will be more like a GH5 with PDAF. Hell, the EM1X with a 10bit codec and decent bitrate would make a great video camera. I was sad to see they didn’t have a new sensor in it. I think $3000 price tag would have been more justified.

Max doesn’t even come close to Tony and Fro. While I agree perhaps the tests were flawed and not scientific enough for this audience I wouldn’t use that same brush on all of Max’s videos. I find his hardware tests focused around video editing helpful and a timesaver. I would also say the system is horribly broken if Max has to alter facts to get clicks. I also share Andrew’s distaste for YouTubes influencer bullshit that goes on, like claiming impartiality when they receive free gear for “good words” (see Matti Haapojas “Most Underated camera of 2019” video; hint the answer is in the title. We aren’t even half way through 2019 yet) But they are just riding the wave before it comes crashing down and they are out a job when YouTube cancels their channel or people get tired of navigating the bullshit.

I didn’t know about it when I was in the market!

Well unless you have dual pixel autofocus and tap to focus on the C300, most people will be stopping down their lens to give them a deeper depth of field for ease of focusing. In this case MFT has an advantage because you can have f2.8 light gathering but a 5.6 depth of field which is more forgiving. I love the MFT mount and hope BM, Panasonic, and Olympus continue to innovate on it. I also think JVC should do the same thing as they did with the LS300: super35 sensor with MFT mount (or some kind of adaptable mount like MAVO) and offer more features in a smaller form factor. I prioritize weight and carry-ability over sensor size and depth of field. I’m definitely in the minority though. Everybody wants that blurry background because is easier to do them think about composition.

I didn’t give feedback but it sounds like they are asking all the right questions. So glad they are actually polling before they design something. Good on JVC. I think they should try and innovate the small cinema camera market. Clearly there is a segment—see for example the success of the P4K and the form factor of the S1H. Smallish with internal NDs and great color science and image tonality. As much useable DR as possible within budget. I think big production houses have their minds made up with what they are using. It’s the ARRI ecosystem and Canon Cxxx for all the rest. A few REDs sprinkled about.

Spring for best GPU possible first and the as much ram as you can afford within reason. 32GB is very workable

JVC the forever dark horse?

This might be helpful: The tl;dw: Thermal throttling is improved. Dont pay extra for for the 2.4Ghz CPU. Performance is identical. With the new Intel chips cheaper to buy the slower processor that has the same boost speed and just try to keep it cool as possible with a laptop cooler. It will sustain it’s higher boost clock longer. Pay for the Vega 20. I wish apple and AMD had better GPU options with CUDA acceleration. Come on AMD!

No it’s the neighborhood dog terrorizer.

It depends. I would generally choose to shoot in 4K and delivery a 1080p for the increase in flexibility in editing with crops, zooms, stabilization and noise reduction in downsampling. The overhead to shoot 4K these days is not high anymore. Unless you are doing YouTube with quick turnaround and don’t have a good computer... YouTube is like the great equalizer. The bitrates are low and people watch 80% on a mobile device. Most TVs do really well upscaling 1080p to 4K. New Samsung 8K tv does it well too. I don’t see any need to shoot higher than 4K unless you have a good reason too.

I think DJI is working hard to create a system where flyers will be able to see in real-time where they can fly and the drone (unless hacked) will not fly in restricted zones. These rules are oppressive and DJI has it in there best interest to try and work with governments to streamline flight approval etc into their app. We are seeing the first steps with mavic enterprise and any new drones having ADSB transponder hardware integrated in them that all plans in the US must have. I think in the US it won’t be so bad. Canada’s recent laws however...basically killed drones for hobby enthusiasts.

All or nothing is what I say. They would be no other reason to release it otherwise.

I totally forgot the Pocket could do this. Yeah this would be a wonderful option to have. I highly doubt we will se BRAW in anything but a blackmagic camera. I also don’t think we will see internal RAW in a camera this cheap in any camera besides blackmagic except for maybe FUJIFILM. FUJIFILM could really move into a great video solution position. They already kinda are. Great color science, built-in film emulation, vastly improving video codecs and capabilities with each release.

Looks like maybe an FPV kit or something.

Not a rumor but more of a fantasy speculation. Ignoring the fabled organic sensor, I was thinking about what Panasonic could do to keep pace and perhaps surpass full frame performance. With the release of new quad-Bayer sensors in smart phones that drastically increases lowlight performance, I materialized a fantasy spec sheet for the GH6. Micro 4/3 48Mpx quad-bayer sensor This would kill two birds with one stone. This would drastically improve lowlight performance by offering a mode that would “sacrifice” megapixels for better lowlight performance. The final product would be 12Mpx, enough for a 4K video resolution in lowlight situations. When there is enough light the full 48Mpx could be used for greater resolution photos or 8K video. 6.5 stops of IBIS in-body with upto 7 stops with a good OIS lens This is a strength of M43. Build upon it. HEVC 10-bit high bitrate codec An ALL-I codec is great but for HFR 4K and 8K I think having HEVC for storage efficiency is crucial. Dual CFast/Express slots At least 14 stops of DR Improved autofocus Some surprises ?

PC hard drive shipments could fall by 50% this year...

Cloud services are convenient at first but quickly become expensive and hard to move away from once you have a lot of data in them. Bottom line is video data is incredibly burdensome no matter how you want to store it. -
Maybe @webrunner5 could provide more context for the perceived fall in the lower end ENG cameras. Its marketing and changing markets. I think a lot of photographers had to start diversifying and offering video services too. And well, when canon made the 5Dm2 then it was like AC in cars. People just expect it as a standard feature now.

Has this been confirmed? The 10bit 422?
-
Yes I know. I was just bringing up the fact that sensors in smaller bodies are already shooting in a 6K process. So why all the extra cooling in the camera? I don’t think anyone was comparing GH5 footage to Varicam. Obviously one has way more dynamic range and color performance. That’s why it’s a 40K+ camera.
-
Yeah I just don’t buy it. 6K and anamorphic isn’t value add enough to pay extra for the “H” model. Not to mention there are already full frame cameras that are shooting 6K and downsampling to 4K. Isn’t this what the A7iii does?
-
I wonder why Panasonic is doing such a soft release. Has this been done in the past by any camera company? If I was in the market for something like this I would be weighing wether to wait for this S1H or just buy another camera now. At this point we can’t really count on anything except it’s called the S1H and it shoots 4K 60 internal.

FCPX is not a bad program, however Apple has woefully neglected it. Feature wise...it sucks. It has been fast and stable for me over the last 4 years. But then you fire up Resolve and it’s just about as fast and it’s just loaded with useful features like local adjustments with tracking and object removal. I think I would like to build something like this, but with the new Ryzen and a Nvidia GPU. I want cool, quiet, small footprint and performance. I just wish it had more ports.
