    6K from the S1H is 6K 24p (3:2 aspect ratio) OPEN GATE, 5.9K up to 30p (16:9 aspect ratio).

Once 6K is downsampled to 4k you can't get it back from the A7III or A6500.

And at the end of the day a lot more makes footage cine quality then the spec of "6K and anamorphic". It comes down to the quality that you get.

Some people will argue that 4K 60 422 on the GH5 is the same as 4K 60 422 on the VariCam and it's not.

Well the VariCam is a bigger sensor, different look.

So the only difference in between S1 w/upgrade & S1H is the 6K and anamorphic modes?

Kinda makes S1 a supervalue at the moment with the free upgrade. kudos to panny for doing that!

Don't forget flippy screen and unlimited record times. Does the S1 have unlimited record times?

I have a feeling there is more to this camera though. Doesn't the S1 only have 8 bit 4k 60p where as the S1H will be 10bit internal.

It's really documentary where the crazy high DR becomes a major feature, no? In the early days of cinema feature filmmakers were lighting to film that held significantly less DR than any recent hybrid.

For more hollywood productions yeah dynamic range doesn't usually matter that much as they are so well lit.

Though with modern filmmaking I feel like natural lighting is becoming a much bigger thing.

Its surprised me sometimes but there aren't too many situations where my GH5 or XT3's dynamic range wasn't up to the task. Some pretty minimal lighting can take care of any issues usually.

Ninja V? The LT doesn't output raw over HDMI

Shogun Inferno is what you'd want

Yeah for me Prores is good enough for pretty much any application. I guess if you are going to spend 10k on a camera you may as well shoot RAW. More expensive tho

2 plus years since the GH5 was released and you think it's coming out soon? That's fan boy talk all the way.

I don't know the GH4 was released in May of 2014 and the GH5 January of 2017. Seems like the GH6 release could be this year or early next year.

Maybe I can help. From mr Skip77 logic, GH5 is system of the past, and as such, people who still love and use it simply hate progress, of whom mr Skip77 feel himself as protector, because he knows what is road map and future - as well as GH5 relict-pensioners, being metaphorical ghosts from past, don't know anything about path to the future, and so they represent certain iteration of dark force against which mr Skip77  always remonstrate bravely and resolutely. As such defined haters, GH5 users deserve special treatment against their contamination influence.

I know you got the Pocket recently, did you get rid of the GH5?

  7. Panasonic is releasing a new M43 zoom lens. They are making a ton of new full frame glass as they are just putting out new full frame cameras with a new mount.

The Pocket 4k is great but the body kind of sucks. It doesn't cater to the same market as people who would buy a GH5. I am sure its winning in terms of people buying it for cinema use but in terms of hybrid cameras it isn't really even competitive.

  8. The GH5 is good enough where I keep contemplating on buying another one.

There is still nothing out there that matches it. The Pocket 4k is amazing but its not a run and gun camera and neither is the Z cam.

I think the GH6 can easily be a winner. Just update the specs a bit, incorporate IBIS, and have good auto focus. With all that there would be nothing else like it on the market. The price should also be $1500 new, same as the XT3.

The Pocket 4k and Z cam are awesome but the GH5 still overall works better for a run and gun hybrid camera, especially considering IBIS.

IBIS is the biggest reason most people get the GH5 combined with the pretty decent specs and low cost of an M43 system.

  9. If the GH5S had internal RAW or 4k 120fps it would have  been a much bigger hit. I did a video called why the GH5Sucks when it came out for those two reasons. We didn't even get internal 10 bit 4k 60p.

Everytime I think about upgrading to a new camera I just remember how good my XT3 is.

If the EOS M does well, I'm presuming the 70D should also. Prores is nice if you want something quick, though skin tones and detail are not as good as RAW. I prefer my old Sony A6300 for Prores. The Dynamic Range and cinematic image are what sets the BMPCC apart from other cameras within its price range.

yeah I wonder what the rolling shutter is on the 70d in RAW, always trade offs.

I recently purchased the Original BMPCC and have only tested it gently using a Lumix 20mm f1.7. I'm waiting for a Metabones Speedbooster to arrive to officially test it with my awesome lens pile, but so far I can say the EOS M RAW is sharper and more detailed. People describe the BMPCC as having "cinematic" image due to its soft cinema look. it's like someone stuck an invisible 1/8 Black Pro-mist filter in front of the sensor. Until the other gears arrive for the BMPCC, I really do prefer the EOS M.

Interesting though I am talking the  70d not the EOSM, though maybe they perform the same. The one benefit of the Pocket is of course prores.

The GH5 was an upgrade to the GH4 and the next release can be even as far as price goes. 12 years ago the JVC camcorder that shot 720p was $8,000 plus a $5,000 tape deck.

Think in reverse - if the GH5 was $1,999 at release just for the body, do you think Panasonic just dropped the price by $500 in the 1 1/2 years since it was released? That means the BMP4K will be $850 in another year. And it means the GH5s is over or under priced right now.

Because the EOS PR came out under $1,500 - that's how the PR is competing with the Z6. Not everyone can spend 2K on a camera.

I don't think of the GH5S as an upgrade just an alternative. It was an upgrade in terms of low light performance, but they sacrificed megapixel count, resolution, and IBIS. There is really no reason to get a GH4 over a GH5. The GH5S and GH5 are a toss up though based on needs.

But yeah I get what you are saying.

  13. 1 hour ago, Skip77 said:

The GH5 and GH5s were over priced at release and the GH5 price dropped is probably the biggest price drop in the last 15 years. The GH5s is considered an upgrade over the GH5 so not sure were the price cut would come from.

The Z6 price drop was based on the Canon EOS RP.

How was the EOS RP competing against the Nikon Z6?

Not sure how the GH5S is an upgrade, kind of just a different camera that was priced higher than the GH5 at launch for no particular reason.

Again, I think that point of @Coii is strictly tide with price... Every modern top of the line consumer camera may be adapted to be used as A or B. But with higher- than-could-be price Panasonic shrinks possibility that S1cine be used as A camera (in spite of enough comparative characteristics). That's the point of estimation: why don't go little bit closer to route of Pocket4K and catch wider user base, instead of rely on users with pretty elite-like wallet capacity? Why not immediately establish reputation of dream camera between those who are strongest public for dreams - fixing price now as much as could be popular, instead of after several month and bad sale ratings, when, very possibly, new products too arrive? Why with such approach Panasonic forces me to buy Pocket 4K instead of GH5s for double starting price, while I know that at least in my market-region GH5s is, at the end, selling-disaster?

Not sure if the GH5S was a disaster in sales. It hasn't seen a big drop in price like the Z6 has in a short time.

  15. An SLR isn't going to replace a cinema camera but this could easily take the spot of B-cam. Lots of people have used the GH5 as a B or C cam, thats how the GHAlex LUT got created.

I think that will be the production use of this camera as well as an A cam for smaller shoots or run and gun stuff. This is actually the first camera in a while that I am semi excited for.  I think the amount of posts in this thread shows that a lot of other people are as well.

I'll be modest and minimal - at this moment: update from any manufacturers of Pocket 4k specs and accordingly proportional price for improvements that include absence of fear of bugs, internal SSD slot and 1000 nit flip screen... it will not hurt if olympusian IBIS would be also there.

A pocket 4k with a 10000 nit flip screen and IBIS(Hey even GH5 level would be great) would be a pretty incredible package.

Check this out if you're a M43 shooter. I bought one and it works great, though I've been just using a regular adapter for a lot of stuff!

    https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F182232037366

I actually have a metabones one I used when I owned panasonic cameras. I switched to Fuji though and couldn't justify the price of another metabones. The cheaper adapters like the one you linked don't quite cut it for me. The difference between a roxen and a metabones probably isn't as big as I'd like to think though. The perfectionist in me is hard on the wallet sometimes.

.Even if I had the AF of a Canon or Sony my work wouldn't change. My favorite lenses are all manual focus lenses; I kinda feel bad for people that aren't using beautiful vintage glass because they don't want to shoot without auto focus. I love my Minolta lenses! They're affordable, well made, and sharp!

Yeah I also like Minolta glass, probably more than Nikon for some reason. Though my speedboosters are for Nikon as well as my Film camera, so I'll probably sell all of my minolta glass. The 35mm 1.8 is tough to get rid of though.

Really without irony, I actually admire people that use AF lenses - every time I tried that, I find myself as stupid without possibility to directly communicate with lens... Also without aperture ring I'm lost. I feel lens as manual painting instrument - I sold nice collection of Contax Zeiss just because Leica R's set feels better in that regard :)

I use both personally. The one nice thing about Fuji auto focus glass is they have manual aperture rings. I agree lenses without a manual aperture ring drive me crazy. I've also gotten used to being able to adjust the shutter speed and iso with a dial on the Fuji cameras which is awesome.

  19. Dynamic Range

    Auto Focus

    Large detailed screen(also bright)

To me Dynamic range really gives the high end look, coupled with 10 bit or higher color depth imo.

Auto focus is huge at least if its as good as what Sony is doing with the A6400.

A 5in screen that is very bright would be really helpful to have on most cameras. Saves me having to have a monitor on top of the camera. Being able to see what you are shooting is highly underrated lol.

  20. No IBIS is a bummer. Really hoping they include internal ND's somehow.

I think Pana auto focus might be state of the art if they incorporate phase detect. They seem to have a pretty advanced ai system in there already.

To get a FF look, they'd have to bin or line skip to avoid reading 24MP at 60fps. So it's either keep the FOV and have binning artifacts, or crop and get fewer artifacts in the image.

They should just include both options and let the user decide.
