A few test shots from a recent location scout. I've been using my Canon 28mm f/1.8 lens a lot lately. It is just so versatile. I originally thought it would be too wide for my tastes as I usually prefer the 35mm-60mm focal lengths, but the ability to get a shallow depth, close up or a fairly, wide establishing shot has been great.

    Well played... well played. Lol.
Seriously, though... we briefly discussed this before... and there is just something about that FF image. Other than going to the complete other end of the spectrum to shoot S16 with the Pocket or Micro, I barely like the idea of shooting Super 35 anymore. And with my distaste for adapters growing by the day, M4/3 seems like a strange crop factor to my eye now.
@BTM_Pix ironically c-mounts are the only things I miss about M4/3 or S16.

As someone less than politely pointed out on the other thread, I appear to have been a bit of a lazy arse in the almost 12 months since I tripped over and found the Cinelike d thing.
You may recall it happened because I was researching making a hardware controller and after several iterations, here it finally is.

And yes, it does look rather like a calculator doesn't it?
The different iterations (including an Android app at one point!) have been in pursuit of making something small, standalone, self powered, fast connecting, push buttons and with an integrated screen at a lowish cost and, well, here we are.
Here is the finished spec and features :
Compatible with all Panasonic Lumix cameras that can be controlled by wifi Integrated USB rechargeable battery Full colour screen 20 keys with 3 bank switch keys giving 60 direct switch operations of functions Control of Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance, Colour Profile, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness and Noise Reduction. Automatic unlocking of Cinelike D and Cinelike V on GX80/85, LX10/15 and TZ10 Control of manual focus in fine and coarse steps  Control of One Shot AF Control of Record Stop/Start Store and Recall 8 focus points 4 selectable transition speeds between focus points Store and Recall 8 setup presets (each consisting of Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance, Colour Profile, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness and Noise Reduction) Presets are stored in non-volatile memory so are available in any session. Boot time to camera connection and control under 2 seconds. Wifi control range tested to 20m. Optional accessories :
Interface module to support Nintendo Nunchuck controller for manual focus control (native lenses and adapted lenses with smart adapters) and zoom (integrated lens cameras and power zoom lenses only) Wireless interface module to sync remote record and stop on supported Tascam, Zoom and SoundDevices audio recorders.  The controller fits a regular cheap cellphone to threaded adapter holder so as well as being used handheld it can be mounted to anything you have a need for with the right attachment so could be on a cage or a gimbal or whatever.

I'm going to be doing some more testing of it in anger in the next couple of weeks and I'll put up a video of it in action then.
So, I have been a bit less lazy than first imagined
By the by, the controller has both wifi and bluetooth so it begs the question would anyone be interested in a version of it for the Pocket 4K ??

I picked up a Helios 44-2 for £5 in a local camera shop... Its battered with large scratches on the elements but delivers a fantastic low contrast image, blooming highlights and good looking flares and outstanding bokeh. for £10 (£5 adapter) it puts many lenses to shame. I paired it with my GH5 & Speedbooster to test it out on a dog walk.

All images have been transformed to Rec709 with minor contrast adjustments on some images. (loving the low contrast!)

@GregormannschaftHey, if m43 coverage is good enough, you could get a b4 2/3 lens with internal doubler, powering the servozoom with an external battery.
Jon, don´t react to negative pms or public messages. They are not worth to be read twice. Enjoy doing your work, just like we do watching it. Mark, I find your last remarks not inspiring nor supporting to do filmwork.

Little lensologist advice needed. I've seen a few videos recently (and yet struggle to find those videos again) which feature some lovely smooth zoom ins to people's faces. I love this style and would love to try and replicate it. Any idea what I'd be looking at buying? Would it only be possible with a par-focal cine lens?

Let me know if my description is a little too vague. Basically, think wide shot, that quickly zooms into someones face, smoothly and in focus.
    Re: everything above.
@jonpais For what it's worth, you may have to accept the occasional remark on the internet about a grey haired white man living in an Asian country posting videos of teen girls posing for the camera. The situation is so culturally and historically loaded, however unfair or inaccurate that may be for your individual situation.
@markr041 You're being immature. There's no need to label Jon 'sick', and I have no clue how anyone would be shocked (SHOCKED) at Jon's video. You're picking a fight and what you have said and directly insinuated is incredibly insulting towards Jon.

I decided to try out the Fujinon-TV 25mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.4. They need to be modified, but I shot some rough test footage to see how they look/compare to other c-mount lenses.

    Fujinon-TV 25mm 1.4 (wide open)

    Canon TV-16 25mm 1.4 (wide open)

    Fujinon-TV 50mm 1.4 (wide open)

    Fujinon-TV 50mm 1.4 (wide open)

    Fujinon-TV 50mm 1.4 (f2)

    Cosmicar 50mm 1.9 (wide open)
The Fujis are very nice, but I'm not sure they're really all that different or better than the Cosmicar and Canon lenses. Not really sure if I'll bother modding them. At least they were dirt cheap.

oh sorry, I forgot to mention that. It's the bmpcc.
Yeah I was told the f/4 was the same way. I even realised that the whole barrel spins when focusing :/

Cokin do a little adapter to use their A series filters with compact cameras that might be come in useful for you for this problem.

It attaches to the tripod mount of the camera and has various lanes you can put it in to move it front and back. I suspect it might not be long enough to put the filter far enough forward with those lenses but its trivial to extend it out with a piece of aluminium etc.
A Series filters cover equivalent of up to 67mm filter thread so will be fine for anything up to there and the holder takes 3 of them.
Obviously, once you have Cokin A series filters you get access not only to their workman stuff like NDs and grads etc but also to their classic 70s and 80s soft porn toolkits !

Nice... Everybody says that lens is a dog, but you’ve proven that theory wrong. I have the f/4 and the barrel is the same way... I don’t even think you can use an ND filter with it. Great lens though. What camera did you shoot this with?

We are currently shooting a piece for my city's marketing company. It's all about inclusion and social diversity.
This shot is from a boxing training session for people with Parkinson's disease. A very humbling experience.

Shot with the Canon FDn 35-70 f/3.5-4.5 and a chinese focal reducer. I recently bought it for under 20$, while searching for the one with a constant f/4 aperture. The only gripe I have with it is that the front element and the filter threads retracts into the front barrel, and I do not have a 52mm ND-filter

More than do-able.  Recommended if the FF route is absolutely the way you want to go.  FF isn't as big of a deal to me anymore, but I do understand why it's nice to have.
A used 5dII and 3 primes is more than enough.  I had this set-up for years and made tons of stuff.  If you can't make it work with that, do something else, like kiosk sales for cell phone covers at your local mall.

Fair enough, but he also shoots with an Alexa. In my opinion, all of the cameras we discuss aren’t in the same category or on the same planet as they’re using in Hollywood. Putting a master prime on a GH4 isn’t going to make GH4 footage look like The Revenant. What I think these cameras can do, is mimic older film pretty damn good.
So I’ve always looked at it as this... there is no way in hell with my resources that I am going to get an image that even minutely competes with an Alexa... even if I was insanely talented. But I may be able to get an image that looks like a 70s or 80s film. And for me, the mere thought that it’s possible with a $2000, or less camera, is pretty astounding. Your mileage may vary.

I’m in the middle of some projects, so I am going to wait until the spring or summer of 2019 to get one. I think this camera is pretty ambitious for BM, so it may not be ready by September anyway. So between my projects and my cautious nature, I’d rather wait to see what kinks the camera has before I throw down the money for one.
Those Panasonic kit lenses, although slow, are pretty sharp even wide open. I had the 14-42mm, first version, last year during the second time I briefly had a Pocket cam.
At the time I was looking for a get up and go alternative to my 5D3 when I wanted to be incognito, and shoot in ProRes for a quick turnaround in post.
I did a test or two and decided to just roll with my 5D3... long story short... I had too much expendable income at the time... wish I had expendable income now. And although I could afford both cameras, my color grading skill set was better suited for the 5D3 and the few little things I would have used the Pocket for didn’t really justify the cost to keep it.
Anyway here’s a short and dumb little, handheld test I did with that lens, a Hoya IR filter and a Bower variable ND. Surprisingly, the OIS was pretty decent. And even with the small sensor, on the long end, wide open, I could get some shallow depth of field.

Turn down the audio... I should have in post. Lol.

Out of likes for today... but I agree. I think this is the perfect form factor. The 12-35mm lens isn’t that large of a lens, so this is still relatively small... smaller than a GH5. The grip looks comfortable and the screen seems to be improved. IMO this is a true run and gun cinema camera. If you don’t need OIS, this camera and the 20mm 1.7 or c-mounts... or even a Speedbooster and ai-s lenses will be a compact package compared to what else is available on the market with these specs.

if a director/producer told me to shoot with any one of a Pocket/Micro/GH5/GH5S then I wouldn't mind in the slightest, I feel they're all "equal but different" to each other.

I reckon your color grader and lighting technique goes further in determining "cinematic" than picking a GH5S or a Pocket.

But a perfect comparison/analogy, but I like it!

Exactly, don't mix up the 4.6K sensor (which is in the URSA Mini 4.6K and URSA Mini Pro) with the 4K sensor! (note that BMD doesn't even bother to offer the 4K sensor in the URSA Mini Pro, as BMD has realised it is time to drop that 4K sensor from their line up)

As those two sensors are living on two different planets.

This morning we filmed our friend Ariel Dyer's entry for the Tiny Desk Contest. We shot with the Canon 7D and BMPCC with My Canon TV-16 25mm and Cosmicar 12.5mm. Here are my BMPCC grabs with quick and dirty color correction.
    Canon TV-16 25mm 1.4 (5.6/8 split, 200asa):

Cosmicar 12.5mm 1.9 (wide open with ND, 800asa):

The last one was a bit underexposed, so there's noise, but I like the rest of the image.

Thanks... Ha. I’m shooting with a 5D3 and ML Raw and mostly EF lenses. This was with a Canon FD 50mm 1.4 that was modified to a Nikon mount so it mounts to EF with a simple adapter. I actually found a Minolta 35mm 1.8 that was modified to EF as well... It needs to be serviced but it works amazingly well with ML Raw...
