  1. I might be misunderstanding something. But with Braw, could you bake in a lut for fat turn around, and then if need be, take the lut off in resolve for better archiving?
  2. That chart only shows max frame rates, and we already know 120 is windowed. I think even at 24/25/30/50/60 it's still going to stay 'windowed' though, because even Ultra HD is. Essentially it's just pillar boxing, but the camera crops the black bars for you, instead of you cropping a DCI image to 16:9 later.
  3. Yes, Grant Petty says it will come in that long video about it. But also on B&H, where they normally just say 'We'll pass this on as a feature request', they say this: Also, you can download the Braw player here (Mac only for now) https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/nl/support/download/9cadff466707404487123c114efce572/Mac OS X Edit OSX 10.12 and up only - Hopefully someone else (VLC) will build it into their software soon enough, I won't be updating my OS just for this.
  4. And Nessie is a wrongly convicted murderer.
  5. Don't forget emailing hundreds of sidecar files to and from a colorist, like it's nothing.
  6. I told y'all they'd come the week after ibc. Hope these aren't jokesters
  7. Grant said they have patents on it. But that doesn't mean others can't use it. Also, I don't think it's a middle finger to Apple. They work closely as proven by the now obsolete BMD e CPU
  8. Isn't this some Pied Piper, middle out kind of ish?
  9. @MattH I suppose it'll sit somewhere between ProRes and cDNG in terms of power consumption then? With ProRes using the most processing power and cDNG using the least.
  10. As it's more processing, moving the de-bayer onto the camera hardware, I wonder how that will effect battery life. Will it take more resources than using ProRes? Certainly more than cDNG.
  11. Haha, so BM made the C.Fast and USB-c recording feature obsolete before their camera even made it to market. Also their eGPU isn't needed to use the footage at all.
  12. It will come to the Pocket 4K in a few months. They've already released the sDK, it's now up to Adobe and others to build it into their software. I doubt it'll take very long for them to pick it up.
  13. At around 22 minutes, Grant talks about shooting in Video Gamma, but the background 'sidecar' files have the metadata of Film Gamma. Does that basically mean with this new format you can shoot for a straight out of camera file, that has the flexibility of RAW should you need it later on? That's absolutely amazing for TV and news work. Broadcast ready files that can go out straight off the cards, but can be archived and graded later. It's pretty much game changing in my field. That alone is a reason to go Blackmagic.
  14. Today at IBC, BMD announce a new Blackmagic RAW codec. Available in a number of variations, depending on your needs for image quality over file size, it appears to overtake ProRes RAW, and will be usable in a number of NLEs thanks to their free SDK for developers. https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/nl/media/release/20180914-01 From @sanveer It seems to address 2 Huge things: 1. The ProRes RAW that Apple was attempting to push across all RAW shooting cameras (which has issues, since it doesn't have any specific flavours and only has a Wrapper for the Proprietory RAW from different camera manufacturers). Blackmagic seems to even show the fundamental flaws with that approach ("Blackmagic RAW is much more than a simple RAW container format. Its intelligent design actually understands the camera and the sensor."). 2. Not enough Compression Options in RAW. Most RAW compressions weren't actually pushing RAW closer to manageable territory (ProRes and H.264 size). This new RAW codec seems to address that (Blackmagic RAW 3:1, 5:1, 8:1 and 12:1). The only question is would it succeed without being open source for other camera manufacturers or only NLE support is good enough.
  15. BMD announce new Blackmagic RAW codec, are they taking on ProRes RAW? https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/nl/media/release/20180914-01 EDIT: This is the menu from the 4.6k camera, so some of the resolution options won't apply to the P4K.
  16. Mistaken post, my bad, please delete this one.
  17. Does that make it a 2.7x crop in 4k60p? That's quite a jump. So the advantage of h265 here is filesizes then?
  18. I've tried looking but am I right in thinking the 4k60p is 400mbps in h265? If so, isn't that equivalent to 800mbps h264? That's quite astonishing. The only downside really is the 4:2:0 in camera. It's already 1.5x crop, is there extra crop for video? I also see that it's rated at 30 minute record times. is that based on 30fps recording? If so, does that mean 60fps is limited to 15 minutes?
  19. I'm trying to move on from that and talk about the camera, and find out when they might be making an announcement. Anyway, you kind of are already invited as it's an open invite, so if anyone is in the area or if you can grab plane ticket, you can go. Same as IBC or Photokina I guess. Let's progress?
  20. Would they invite people to come and see it on the 19th Sept, if it'd already been released by then? They're also inviting people to come see the URSA Mini Pro too, so hopefully there's nothing in this, just another reason for them to mention the camera...
  21. So, IBC has started and BMD said they have an announcement regarding the P4K. Does anyone know when they have a conference or some stage time to make the announcement? Where could we watch it? They say they're on track for Sept release, so I'm expecting them to press the dispatch button during IBC. What are your thoughts?
  22. I've been surprised by the lack of views on these videos too. Even the very first videos seem to have very little interest. And there's a huge jump from the very first video to all the others, even though they were released almost daily. Nature: 125k Models Walking in Daylight: 44k Models Walking at Night: 27k Balloons: 45k Models Close Up at Night: 49k Bugs: 31k Mountain Bike: 29k
  23. I dunno man, those ISO 6400 shots at the end are pretty unbelievable. I think at the end of the day, this camera, and most likely other BM cameras are made for the editor not necessarily the camera op. It's all about how you deal with the footage in post. That video was shot uncompressed RAW, so the look you're unimpressed by was created entirely by the colourist and editor. Also, you can download the clip off the vimeo link:
