It will come to the Pocket 4K in a few months. They've already released the sDK, it's now up to Adobe and others to build it into their software. I doubt it'll take very long for them to pick it up.

At around 22 minutes, Grant talks about shooting in Video Gamma, but the background 'sidecar' files have the metadata of Film Gamma. Does that basically mean with this new format you can shoot for a straight out of camera file, that has the flexibility of RAW should you need it later on? That's absolutely amazing for TV and news work. Broadcast ready files that can go out straight off the cards, but can be archived and graded later. It's pretty much game changing in my field. That alone is a reason to go Blackmagic.

Done - nice idea.

Today at IBC, BMD announce a new Blackmagic RAW codec. Available in a number of variations, depending on your needs for image quality over file size, it appears to overtake ProRes RAW, and will be usable in a number of NLEs thanks to their free SDK for developers. https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/nl/media/release/20180914-01 From @sanveer It seems to address 2 Huge things: 1. The ProRes RAW that Apple was attempting to push across all RAW shooting cameras (which has issues, since it doesn't have any specific flavours and only has a Wrapper for the Proprietory RAW from different camera manufacturers). Blackmagic seems to even show the fundamental flaws with that approach ("Blackmagic RAW is much more than a simple RAW container format. Its intelligent design actually understands the camera and the sensor."). 2. Not enough Compression Options in RAW. Most RAW compressions weren't actually pushing RAW closer to manageable territory (ProRes and H.264 size). This new RAW codec seems to address that (Blackmagic RAW 3:1, 5:1, 8:1 and 12:1). The only question is would it succeed without being open source for other camera manufacturers or only NLE support is good enough.

BMD announce new Blackmagic RAW codec, are they taking on ProRes RAW? https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/nl/media/release/20180914-01 EDIT: This is the menu from the 4.6k camera, so some of the resolution options won't apply to the P4K.

Mistaken post, my bad, please delete this one.

Does that make it a 2.7x crop in 4k60p? That's quite a jump. So the advantage of h265 here is filesizes then?
-
I've tried looking but am I right in thinking the 4k60p is 400mbps in h265? If so, isn't that equivalent to 800mbps h264? That's quite astonishing. The only downside really is the 4:2:0 in camera. It's already 1.5x crop, is there extra crop for video? I also see that it's rated at 30 minute record times. is that based on 30fps recording? If so, does that mean 60fps is limited to 15 minutes?

I'm trying to move on from that and talk about the camera, and find out when they might be making an announcement. Anyway, you kind of are already invited as it's an open invite, so if anyone is in the area or if you can grab plane ticket, you can go. Same as IBC or Photokina I guess. Let's progress?
-
Would they invite people to come and see it on the 19th Sept, if it'd already been released by then? They're also inviting people to come see the URSA Mini Pro too, so hopefully there's nothing in this, just another reason for them to mention the camera...
-
So, IBC has started and BMD said they have an announcement regarding the P4K. Does anyone know when they have a conference or some stage time to make the announcement? Where could we watch it? They say they're on track for Sept release, so I'm expecting them to press the dispatch button during IBC. What are your thoughts?

Brownies are the best hiding place.

I've been surprised by the lack of views on these videos too. Even the very first videos seem to have very little interest. And there's a huge jump from the very first video to all the others, even though they were released almost daily. Nature: 125k Models Walking in Daylight: 44k Models Walking at Night: 27k Balloons: 45k Models Close Up at Night: 49k Bugs: 31k Mountain Bike: 29k

I dunno man, those ISO 6400 shots at the end are pretty unbelievable. I think at the end of the day, this camera, and most likely other BM cameras are made for the editor not necessarily the camera op. It's all about how you deal with the footage in post. That video was shot uncompressed RAW, so the look you're unimpressed by was created entirely by the colourist and editor. Also, you can download the clip off the vimeo link:

Isn't that basically what DJIs drones do now? They're pretty fun.

I think he meant shooting 120fps is also 4x crop. But yes, all 1080 raw options will be 4x as well as 120fps Prores options.
-
Only in 1080 raw. 1080 Prores is full sensor 'When you add the cost of the peripherals most likely required... extra batteries, a couplechargers (canon batteries take 2 hours to charge) or an external battery solution, memorycards, lenses, possibly a speedbooster, NDfilters, IR cut filters, a follow focus, a cage, etc... you are looking at well over $3000' @mercer Most of that is highly subjective too. Batteries are cheap and often come with chargers. I can get 4 for less than €50. Memory cards, yes I'll give you that. Lenses, that applies to every camera talked about on here. Speedbooster, I think most of us have one, or have native lenses, but granted, could be something to factor in. Then the rest depends on your style of shooting. For example, I don't plan on getting any kind of cage. Then the ISO point, it's not 400 or 3200. My understanding is anything between that range will be a pretty clean image, and judging from what I've seen, even a little higher is a very nice picture. Anyway, the whole thing basically depends on what you have already and how you shoot with your gear... Same as every other camera on the market. Edit: yes the files will be big, but if you really want you can convert them to h264 for archiving or whatever. But you can't cut a short peice of string longer.

I've been using that kind of math too, but BM have said that you can record 4k60p RAW through the USB-C providing your drive is fast enough. They do not. They have an iPad app to control the camera settings and start stop recording, but no viewfinder. They've made all the necessary info available to developers so they can create their own, third party apps, but it's my understanding the the live view thing isn't possible via Bluetooth.
-
It means you can only record to one device at a time. No usbc and sd No sd and cfast No cfast and usbc Etc. Etc.
-
That's true. But then what's stopping them from already offering raw? Is it just the write speeds of their chosen media, with usbc bypassing that bottleneck? Or is it that they simply don't want to offer raw? I'm already planning on using my Zucato evf for a few types of shoots, and thought of mounting the t5 onto that. But I really wouldn't want to be jiggling the USB very much at all. Especially since people here have already warned against the stability of a usbc port. When I do use the Zucato, it rarely stays in the same place relative to the camera for the whole shoot.
-
@BTM_Pix could combine his cheap screen and a raspberry pie case and create exactly that. You'd still need 2 cables though as the USB doesn't give a video signal. Good shout @Andrew Reid , wouldn't the camera manufacture have to create their own raw format? Or adopt Prores raw? The USB drive essentially copies the file being created in the camera in real time right? Also, but I don't think atomos will be too happy about it. haha
-
So don't bring it up. Weird how in that sample pic, the USB is going the wrong way to the port. I'd definitely make it go the shortest route and tie up any slack.
-
If that had a changeable lens, I'd definitely go for it. That's basically the perfect run n gun cam.
-
2x crop of the sensor, which is already 2x crop of full frame (give or take) so 120fps is 4x crop compared to ff. And yeah, epoxy a little shoe into one side of the drive. A dedicated, pre-made mount by any company will cost more than it needs to that's for sure. I think the shoe mount idea will look a little slicker too, and be just as secure. You could even mount it to the bottom of the cam for handheld shots.
-
I think I'm going to use velcro, or bring back that epoxy idea and stick on a shoe mount. As for rolling shutter, the mountain bike video will give you a good idea of how much it effects the footage... It's not noticeable to me at all.
