  1. Am I right in thinking that with the new Video Assists and BMD's plug-in for Adobe and Avid, Braw is currently supported on more cameras AND in more NLEs than ProRes RAW?

    No and very much yes.

That's a shame. I was convincing myself that if the footage and photos come out nice, it'll be worth the price, but it was a close call. More price means less interest from me... at least for now.

  2. Well so far any raw even for Prores raw is SDI right? Nikon were going to be the first to deliver raw over HDMI, but they seem to be struggling.

The difference with Braw is that it creates the file based on the sensor data, so Blackmagic need to create some sort of profile to make each camera's configuration compatable.

Not as simple as plug and play.

This is also properly scaled? Last time I used it it was either choppy/B&W (but properly scaled) or smooth/color (but cropped in, and not even center cropped at that). This has improved?

1080 MCM Rewire is properly scaled, realtime in colour. Any higher resolutions have choppy B&W or cropped view on the LCD. For me, it's too difficult to use and trust the outcome.

Update to my banding issue above. In MLVApp, I switched from Arri Log-c to Film and that fixed my problem... I then used @ZEEK rec709 to Logc lut in MLVApp to convert it back to the log(ish) footage that I wanted in the first place. Thanks for the LUT!

  4. Ursa Broadcast receives Braw and pixel refresh in camera. Update in November.

P4k update due in a couple weeks.

    Braw codec update to v1.5

BMD have created Premiere and AVID Braw plugin available now.

Video Assist uses 2x Sony NPF batteries - HDR, 12g SDI in and out, 2 x mini XLR HDMI in and out, 2 x SD cards or USBc, ProRes and DNX, lanc, locking power connector (screw in), 2500nit, full screen scopes with PIP and overlay

7 inch $995 available in October.

5 inch (1 SD slot, no XLR, smaller BNC but still 12g SDI, no lanc) $795 available in October.

Both models have Braw for other camera manufacturers, C300ii and EVA-1 supported but only with update to VA coming later this year. (free update)

  5. I recently filmed a vacation video with my EOSm and enjoyed it, but now I'm home and I've noticed a whole load of banding all over my footage. I've never seen it in other things I've filmed with the camera, and I don't feel like I've pushed the grade any more than normal, and I'm having a hard time getting rid of it. In fact, you can see it in the ungraded screengrab!

I've attached some screen grabs to show you what I mean.

    WORKFLOW:

    1080p rewire 25p (I think 12bit)

Use MLVapp to do minor adjustment and convert to Arri Logc then export as ProRes. I also bring it up to 4k from MLVapp.

If it helps, here's my settings in MLVApp:

Yes, in a pinch, a Rode wireless is better than nothing! But that is a rather low bar to set for it?

Well, setting a bar too high creates unrealistic expectations as we've seen in this thread.

Many photographers have a second, identical body in their bag at all times as a backup... isn't that a low bar to set for high end cameras? Preparation can never be a bad thing, and this allows you to make those preparations without doubling the price of each piece of kit.

  7. It’s not 10-20x the price by any means, but my Sennheiser AVX-ME2 set failed on me the other day and the Wireless Go came to the rescue and literally saved a shoot that couldn’t be redone.

To me, the low price means there’s no excuse for not having this in your bag. Every piece of equipment can fail, and having a quick and easy solution will likely get you repeat business. Having a bad excuse, blaming your equipment will only get you unhappy clients.

  8.  Music is very personal to the writer and the listener for different reasons, and for me, this song can never be beaten.

The whole album is fantastic and I urge anyone who hasn't heard it to give it a go at least once.

EDIT: they also soundtracked the 1929 film 'Man With a Movie Camera' and that's a great album too, especially if you can find it synced to the film.

  9. I have one of those vests and find it very handy - although mine is just a cheapo fishing vest or something, in a nice greenish brown colour.

As for backpacks and air travel, I've been using this CamRade backpack for a while and think it's fantastic. Highly recommended. I think it comes in a few sizes, the biggest is borderline plane friendly. I think mine's the middle version, but can't really remember now.
