The omission of IBIS is not a 1-to-1 tradeoff. The numerous additional features of the GH5s plus its target market made IBIS impossible.

In theory iti is so But in real life - first of all, I really don't like software corrected native lenses (nor their limited stabilization); and second, to use f2.8 (which, in fact, is more >f3 in the case of these zooms), you have to crank ISO up to 12800 in equivalent situation where your 17.5 use ISO 1600 wide open.
As we can see, even GH5 in ISO 12800 inevitably lose color information. Its really great strength is ingeniously clean and fully DR usable ISO 2500-3200 image, because of second native iso value.

    I did it
As soon as I see that it's shipped I'll sell my GH5.

Personally, I do think there are stories that are too complex for a 10-20 minute short, but too simple for a full feature. I will often scour Amazon and Youtube specifically for longer short films from unknown directors/writers. I think there's a sweet spot around 40 minutes.

@Liam i agree with everyone else lol
fwiw, heres how things have gone with me lately...
i recently got a lot of good feedback in this thread about length regarding a proposed episodic series of short pieces
long story short (pun intended), i decided that id be better off with a short film – under 10 min. i figured that i could boil down my ideas into a shorter piece. so i wrote something, 10 pages, and although it came out ok... i just wasnt in love with it. its not me. my original concept was for a horror thing with verrryyy slow shining like pacing, and trying to turn that piece into something much shorter just didnt work for me. i have to borderline love anything i write in order to try to shoot it, and what i had come up with felt cliched, and at the least, something someone else could write
but doing all that was really good for me. once i saw things clearly i released my grip on that concept, and then was my paw was open to receive new blessings of filmmaking!!!
and somehow all that stuff totally resulted in me coming up with something almost completely different:
    • its short as can be, like 5 min or less ( = easier)
    • theres no dialogue ( = omg easy)
    • theres ~3~ characters instead of like 14
    • theres one location instead of many
    AANND
    • MOST OF ALL, i like it way better. it feels like something id make, as opposed to something thats kinda forced
so, whats the moral of this story, and how does it relate to this thread? i dont know @Liam, i dont know

How do you like the Newshooter kit? I got it for this exact reason, but have yet to really try it out on a full day.

Dunno. I have never used it.
But I'll say personally I always use a wired boom myself.
Although on very rare occasions when I've had a boom op under me then I've handed them a RodeLink Newshooter Kit to use with their boom.

Is it simply a new Vlog which is 5 times better than the original...and will cost 500€/$? A free red sticker to be included in the purchase?
This is terrible! Having to wait until 2018 means xmas has been ruined! Panasonic, quit f**king around. Bring back the original release date!

I think it might be a misstep for Panasonic to create the three separate lines in this manner. To me it screams being a reactionary move instead of well-thought marketing strategy. Say this new camera will be a heavily video-centric model, the G9 is the heavily photo-centric one, and the GH5 is the hybrid. The problem is that throughout its marketing cycle, the GH5 was presented as a video camera first and foremost, with some talk about the stills features. Remember, the first tease of info about the camera was solely video based: 10 bit 4:2:, 4K60p, and 1080p180. Even the in-person interviews with Matt Frazier and Sean were so heavily leaning on video that stills were barely even brought up. If Panasonic had this 3 camera plan all along, the reps surely would have emphasized the *hybrid* designation more (even if they weren't going to announce other cameras for some months).

It seems disrespectful to consumers of the GH5 for Panasonic to release a substantial updated model so shortly after release. Especially, if this was on their roadmap all along. This would be unlike Panasonic. Therefore I think a likely scenario is an updated model with a few new bells and whistles, but with the bulk of features coming from software. Panasonic will offer these software upgrades to GH5 owners at a cost ~$500.

Less megapixels is certainly not the only way to increase ISO performance. The GH5 is substantially better than the GH1 in low light and it has far more megapixels. Processing power, heat dissipation, and other factors also have a role in ISO performance. The fact that Luke Neumann is posting high resolution anamorphic frame grabs points to the same or a variant of the GH5 sensor.

The rumored pricing is the issue and one of the biggest factors in figuring out what may be included in the new GH5.
All rumors state $2499... well you’re not getting a S35mm sensor GH5 for that price. It would piss off too many current owners and it would eliminate too many of their m4/3 lenses, unless they have decided to go EF... but that also would piss off current m4/3 lens owners heavily invested in the system. I doubt it’s Raw for some of the same reasons.
It’s probably something as simple as full VLog for better DR and a better codec or more efficient codec for the higher bitrate modes.
I still think it will be available as a new body for $2499 or a paid firmware upgrade for existing GH5 owners.

I've thought about this as well. Internal ND and better ISO performance is enough to convince me to buy.

That’s true and I guess VLog will be free instead of an add on.
Since we’re speculating, I would love for Panasonic to release a GH5b that only offers 10bit 1080p 200mbps all-i up to 72fps, and IBIS. I don’t need VLog or any AF, I’ll take the waveform and the shutter angle feature all in a metal body the size of the G85. Make it a 12MP sensor for $1000 to $1200 and I’m a buyer. I assume I’ll see a Canon Rebel with 4K before I’ll see that camera... so probably never.
And I guess I wouldn’t mind some anamorphic too. May as well.

Very interesting info about the organic sensor here. I didn't realize it would have that sort of capability. Short of that though, I do think an electronically-charged, internal ND would be awesome in this little camera. For me that is the last step needed for a GH camera to be considered a full feature video camera, at least as such could be defined today. I do agree that a electronic shutter is not without downsides for still shooting, but this camera is {rumored} to be *very* video-centric. I believe many video shooters would gladly trade a mechanical shutter for internal ND... if this were the actual situation. We'll see soon.
I think the new sensor {rumor} will open up a few new possibilities:
    -Better low light performance
    -Better color rendition
    -Better DR?
-Faster sensor readout for higher fps
-and maybe even elimination of rolling shutter

@maxotics to further go down this tangent let me just say that I despise the new title workflow. For some reason my computer slows to a crawl when trying to use the new title tool and much of the UI seems like a backwards step. I hope Adobe fixes this soon. I think the parallel you draw here is accurate; often times programmers overlook the user experiences when adding/updating features.

I couldn't agree with you more!  I mean like, triple AMEN!    I have never worked with a camera SDK that seemed like it was designed by half-competent developers (unlike the main ML devs).  Indeed, recently I wanted to control Sony cameras.  Did I load up the SDK?  NOPE.  Been down that road, with unanswered questions on life-less forums.  So I installed the USB Camera Remote and used a library that basically does key-stroke pressing on the application's interface.  When it comes to SDKs, all the camera makers are pathetic.
Now this may seem like a tangent, but I want to prove a point.  Adobe Premiere just re-vamped their whole TITLE making process.  THREW OUT THE WHOLE THING.  Now there is a "Graphics" interface.  When you create a title you get bountiful properties and methods in the Graphics pane.  It's been built from the ground up.  Should be perfect, right?  Yet it has everything but the TEXT OF THE TITLE!  In order to change the text of the title you have to click on the "Text" tool on the timeline.  Is the text of a graphic a property of a timeline?  WTF!  It makes me speechless! My brain freezes trying to comprehend how Adobe management could let something like that pass.   It's a KLUDGE of monumental incompetence.  My 2-cents
There are very, very few software developers who have a real talent for programming.  Just like there are very, very few bloggers who have a talent for writing about cameras   The world runs on computers.  There is still a fair amount of managers at Canikon who weren't brought up on computers.  In short, there is a chronic shortage of talent.  If Adobe can't get enough good talent, what hope everyone else?
Look at ML, of the 28,000 members my guess is there are only 50 or so people with hard-core programming skill.  And if more, they don't have the time.  Put another way, I bet 8 out of 10 software guys at Canon don't even understand what the ML devs do.  It's over their head.

I've had mine since day one and use it for video and photo. Aside from the remarkable video features, this thing is a wonderful stills camera. I shot a wedding this past weekend with it. Had to boost the ISO to 4000 for the reception and it looks fantastic. The AF-C with 225 point AF worked amazingly. Normally I use my Nikon D3s for receptions due to the low light IQ and focussing ability, but the GH5 blew it out of the water focussing-wise.

No, not really. Let's say you go down in exposure less than is necessary to eliminate the zebras. So you're really still overexposed and you should still see the zebras. The problem is you won't as soon as you exit the adjustment.
YEAH!!!! YEAH!!!!! And did I say, YEAH!!!!
Orangenz, I'd give you 5 likes if I could. That was unquestionably my biggest annoyance with the cam and it's now gone.
