I think the bullshit in this topic is putting me in a very difficult position. The original story is about DPReview locking a protest photographer's thread on their forums.
And now this one has died with such ugly bullshit remarks I may have to lock it.
And then people are going to cry hypocrisy.
All I can say is, there is no free speech for racists.

Thanks all! I will try to create 720 proxies as well as film 1080 vs. 4k and see if there is a noticeable difference on the a73.  Worst case I will look into trading my 2015 MBP in for a 2020 13" MBP.  I think I have a good game plan thanks to the suggestions here.  Much appreciatd!

Thanks! @FranciscoB how can I tell if the a7iii can create proxies?
    @tupp:

-Keynote is a cute app and I find it helpful - not sure I can change video export settings but will check!
-I probably will stick with Mac for ease of use etc. as my free time spent for work doesn't motivated me to learn/work with linux and creating my own machines.  Granted this may be the most efficient i'm seeking most efficient with Apple's products available to me.
-I appreciate your feedback but education has changed and my individual desire to provide more engaging content to my students doesn't represent anything other than attempting to be a part of a small group of teachers who use technology to reach our students.  Chalkboards exist, I like them.  Whiteboards exist, I like them better.  Smartboards exist, I like them even better.
-My 2015 macbook pro is not a T2 chip device

Thanks @tupp I am using a combo of iPhone and Sona A7III video.  Additionally, I am making videos from Keynote for animations etc and layering all of these clips sometimes picture in picture etc.  I am just not sure if it will take a long time to create proxies if I am making anywhere from 1-3 videos a week, which is to support my job as a teacher.
Apple has offered $480 for my 2015 MBP and I was looking at a 13" 2020 MBP 2 ghz, 32gb ram, 512 SSD for $2100 or $1600 after giftcard.

Currently using a mid-2015 MBP 2.2 i7 w/ 16gb of ram.  As soon as I add the videos to iMovie (moving to FCPX this week) and layer them with green screen or picture in picture/etc. the computer slows and sounds like a jet engine taking off.  Not sure if creating proxies or upgrading new a 13" MBP 2020 model would be helpful. Also edit internally vs. external thoughts?
I will be creating mostly 5-15m videos for educational purposes on a weekly basis.

    Thanks!

    1. Stick w/ 2015 MBP 15" and use proxies with external HD or Internal?
    2. Upgrade to 2020 MBP 13" and use regular files with external or internal?

Don't know much specifically about your gear, but merely using proxies should give a huge performance boost.  Working with compressed camera files can slow things down to a crawl and cause discrepancies in effects and color grading.

You shouldn't need high quality files until grading and rendering.  Some graders transcode camera files to uncompressed and then work on them.

Regardless, if you get a new MacBook, Louis Rossmann (who makes a living repairing MacBooks) warns folks to disable secure boot.   If your current MacBook has a T2 chip, you should make sure that secure boot is disabled.

I'd say: forget about green screen. Not only is proper lighting - and postproduction - for grey screen complex/difficult, but the Sony isn't really the right camera for that task because of its 8bit 4:2:0 codec. (Greenscreen work is one of the reasons for using raw cameras...)

For a good and inexpensive mic, I'd first go for a lavalier, especially if you speak to students. The Audio Technica ATR3350 is a really good low-cost solution. - And I wouldn't use an on-camera mic 10 feet away...

i like the Colors from every single camera. I prefer slightly warmer tones that tilt red hue, I like that. I also like images that don’t have that. I like videos that don’t AB ad naseum or shoot brick walls.

    I like helpful people.

I like that photo from SI, is like it better with a slide toward warmer.

His response to me was "Bad skin tone from a Professional Sony photographer.  Let me in and I'll nail the shot and skin color with a Canon." "His photo's are bad. No anticipation, very bad composition , bad color, nothing dynamic, missed focus."
I'm giving him the chance to prove himself. ?

Can one really make an evaluation of a tool, such as a camera, purely on a single video by a user many here don't seem to care for?  I think there is plenty of examples of good images coming from Sony A7 III etc. but can also agree that SOOC of XT2/3 is typically more appealing.  If you don't AB the heck out of it and just watch quality filmmakers with any camera the images look good.  Sometimes its more of a limitation of the user than the tool.

Not sure I would say TOTALLY abandoned the video side but yeah, it is a bit behind some of the opposition now (they only really had the A7s pair and a few odds and ends before that in the ILC space that were more video centric though).    I would just say NOT class leading and they still make great hybrid cameras with excellent stills and decent enough video for many serious users.  They are due for something soon I think (as are some others).     Great time to like and use photo/video gear.

I did address it to you.     Just pointed out that part is what i objected to.
Look, you can have an opinion that YOU do not like Sony (or any camera or brand) if you want but to say that a brand is not used by serious photographers or videographers (and especially one that is selling quite well) is simply trolling as well as being absurd in my opinion as well as being insulting to the many people who make their living using such gear.    You don't like it, fine....others DO.
I like all the brands of photography gear I have used and just occasionally do i not like a piece of equipment.      I never got on with a Canon 7d for instance but that does not mean others did.
I almost never watch Tony and Chelsea and have not for a year or so and last I was aware of there were just a few more Sony Users than the Northrup's.
No gear is perfect ...for ME, the A7s (first version is still the camera I want and use), for others it would be the last thing they want...same with the newer higher FF Sony's and all those cameras from any brand.
Yes, Sony has a colour issue for many people (not all) but equally, other people find greater limitations with different brands.   I think the main issue is AWB for Sony and I mainly use Jpegs and do not grade the songs i video....I do not consider myself to be anything but an old amateur but my photos and (odd video) do get used by newspapers, councils, record companies, bands and others from time to time.    I have to use RAW with  my old Canon DSLR as there is a noticeable difference but with my A7s, not so much.

Andrew, I agree that there ARE a lot of stills pros STILL with Canon and Nikon (I actually do not think the number with Leica is huge at all and many of those that DO actually use dual systems) but there ARE an increasing number using Sony (or rather an increasing percentage in a shrinking market).     I also think a LOT of Pros that use Sony are also dual system users including quite a few Canon users who investigate Sony (while keeping their lenses still though that is dropping off a bit now maybe or some have settled on Sony and selling off their canon gear).    Again though there is an increasing number, at least around here.
It also depends on what you mean by "pro" as around here at least there are a LOT of people who hang out a shingle and shoot weddings on the weekend...many of those are still "serious" photographers and seriously good.    Then there are those using APSC cameras to take Santa pics/portraits at the mall.
I would also take the work of many high end "enthusiasts" over many pros too and are clearly "serious photographers".
This is the bit i objected to especially...
"Most of these users are not serious photographers or videographers either.  If they do video then they know how much work goes into fixing Sony color.
I've seen professional photographers that use Sony and post work with horrible unnatural skin tones that can't be fixed by shooting RAW.  Sony is not being used by serious professionals."
And THAT is as ridiculous as it would be to say that ONLY Sony users are serious photographers/videographers....it is rubbish!

The color looks more pleasing overall on the F3.

I am terrible at judging color though. I was shooting on the A7III yesterday. The menus are terrible but otherwise its quite a remarkable piece of equipment.

I just sold my Sony F3 to fund a Fuji XT3. They really seem to not be selling as much vs when I got it this spring.

The 'brand loyalty' argument is both naive and simplistic. Afterall, almost by definition, a Sony user has 'switched' from another brand over the past 5 years.
The fact is that Sony has a lot of strengths for photography especially mirrorless - it just so happens that 'color' isnt one of them.
Also straight out of camera color isnt that important to most photographers as with raw it is always something that you can easily adjust in post. And for those that straight out of camera color is important - they probably arent using Sony.
My feeling with Sony though is that their color problems are mostly to do with their 'auto white balance'....

IIRC the tests i've seen showed that the Sony (the one they were testing anyway) was the most colour accurate of the bunch, more accurate than Canon, Fuji and the like.
Of course, that's different to what is the most pleasing, and to that end, I agree that Sony doesn't do the best job.  I have also seen some strange WB choices from Sony shooters in the past too.
