Dave Maze got a reaction from Henry Gentles in Battle of the Canons! 1dc vs. C100 vs. C300mkii
I had some free time today and so I went into the studio and did some tests. They aren't very proper and they aren't the best in the world...but hopefully this will help someone out there!
I used some of the EOSHD Canon picture profiles for the 1DC part so check that out!
I am by no means a professional colorist. I tried to balance the images best I could in Resolve. You will notice that some shots are a tad blurry....I'm sorry about that. I had continuous autofocus on.
    Here are my findings:
    Canon 1DC:
It's totally still relevant. The fact that this camera came out in 2012 and is competing with the new C300 mkii is incredible.
Official Canon Log: Is great. It grades really nicely and is really clean and natural looking. Totally recommended. The 4k 4:2:2 8bit is much better than the 1080p 4:2:0 of the C100.
EOSHD C-Log: Its good for sure but not as good as built in Canon Log on the 1DC. I need to play more with it but I had some troubles with it.
Other EOSHD profiles: These are fun! I love the Monochrome one a lot!
    C100:
Its done. Too old. Image is soft. Has terrible artifacts. Built in codec is total crap. Get this guy out of here.
Wide DR if handled properly could be a good profile to shoot most things on. Its not too flat so the low bitrate doesn't fall apart as much.
    C300 mkii:
This is the best camera of the three (as it should be) but not by much in relation to 1DC!
Canon Log and Canon Log 2 aren't very good. Canon Log 3 seems just about right as far as nailing the color science. Everything balanced really nicely and looked great.
4K 10Bit really holds together nicely when grading.
I thought 1080p 12bit would be stronger...but I really didn't notice much of a difference between it and the 4k footage.
Slow motion: It's OK. There are other cameras coming out that have better slow motion abilities. To go past 60fps you have to crop in on the sensor by 2x which turns the crop from being 1.4x (Super35) to 2.8! That's more than micro four thirds.

I did a shoot yesterday with my 1DC and Contax Zeiss glass and loved the results. It was a nice reminder how great it is. Low light, color science, and full frame all great on it. Such a clean but beautiful image. Still gonna hold onto the 1DC until I do proper GH5 tests.

Canon has threatened ML if they touch the 1DC they will unleash their lawyers on them. It will more than likely never happen unfortunately.

That's insane as canon doesn't care about the 1dc since it was a bomb - no one supports it including them, that's too bad... come on to my blog and maybe we can convince someone to take it on, ha! The 1dxm2 4k footage is crap compared to the 1dc, and now that the price has dropped, it's a truly amazing image for the price, but there are many many impediments to overcome to make it user friendly... it's brand new but please come and contribute your experience and knowledge: https://canon1dcuser.wordpress.com/

I'm  considering adding the GH5 as my second cam for slow mo, drone shots, etc - but they are very different tools. They both offer stunning images (and if you know how to light, compose, direct) you can make amazing work on either one. remember some of the most iconic images and films ever made were on equipment that is now worth nothing. I would say figure out which one best suits exactly the kind of work you do and hope to do and go with it. If you have an amazing reel, no one cares what you shot it on. And when your client insists on Red for some stupid reason - fine, just rent it. You need to have the best tool to allow you to realize your personal vision when you're not on someone else's dollar. And I disagree - the 1dxm2 is no competitor to the gh5, I have done several tests and the 4k footage from the 1dxm2 is junk compared to the 1dc - I will be buried with my 1dc. Never giving up the magic that camera spits out...

Then again everyone and their mother are going to sell off their 1DCs and C100s and BMPCCs to buy the new GH5, so your work may be more differentiated by keeping the 1DC.

GH5 on paper looks great, but until you film with it who knows. The 1DC is special and has a look that makes any owner ignore the lack of features. I was questioning the move to Panasonic as well, but I need low light and personally not sold on the 4/3s ... I was a huge DVX100 fan and loved Panasonic color science back in the early days. Until the GH5 is given the Phillip Bloom field test I would be happy hanging onto my 1DC or rent the GH5 and take it for a spin.

This, a thousand times this, I'd be 110% focused on getting out of debt if I was you. Rest of all this nonsense we discuss on this forum matters relatively little compared to that!

I've been a Panasonic user since the GH2 and each upgrade has been fantastic. They've successfully delivered worthwhile improvements in every area of function and image and seem to really listen to their user base. It's an exciting yet reliable system to be a part of. The GH5 looks certain it will continue this trend and two areas of promising improvement seem to be low light and colour given the current videos (an area where Canon has historically had the edge).
However, like @Flynn says, a lot of Canon users love the colour science and can't let it go despite the cameras lacking functionality and features. If that specific mojo inspires you to make films then you may struggle with a switch to Panasonic.
How do you use your cameras? For earning money, for filmmaking on the side, or a mixture of both? I use them for both so the practicality and features of the Panasonics win the day. I think I would feel like I had one arm tied behind my back if I tried making a living as videographer with a 1DC now.
My other thought, was that if your dream is to clear your debts and get to LA (not far off mine!) then I would be making all my decisions based on what would get me there faster. At the end of the day, mojo, lowlight, codecs, and all the jazz we are all guilty of getting sucked into on this forum, are secondary to having a great idea, writing it and shooting it. If you've got something dynamite, it can be shot on anything and other factors such as writing, lighting, acting and editing will be what get your piece noticed.
Final thought, networking in LA will probably advance your career more than any camera ;-)

Not sure I would part with a 1DC for a GH5. The image from the 1DC looks great.  But I would certainly consider it as a B-cam.

Smart move to do some tests and then decide. You sound pretty happy with what you've got. A lot of Canon people seem to get super disappointed when moving to another system. But, if you end up preferring the GH5, get what you can out of the Canon. Not like you won't be able to buy another one down the road, probably for much less.

Shoot everything at 1080p. Don't shoot yourself in the foot with 4K. Although I do like shooting ceremonies at 4K for the post crop.
Canon skin tones are the best. Even a used 70d would be better than Sony IMO. The C100 mk1 and 2 are the best cameras for weddings IMO. I've shot a few recently with C100 mk1 and my 1DC and it's super nice. Here's a teaser I did with 1DC/ C100 combo:

You MUST MUST MUST remember that wedding films are CONSUMER PRODUCTS. DONT EVER FORGET THIS. THIS IS 6 years of experience and over 300 weddings shot of experience talking to you. These people aren't professional filmmakers. They aren't producers. They aren't film snobs. All they want is pretty shots of them on their big day. If you shot it all with a t2i and a 50mm 1.8 they would love it because it looks "cinematic". Don't get caught up with the gear when it comes to shooting weddings. That's the biggest waste of time and money. The couples simply don't give a shit.
I hope you enjoy it. Weddings are a fantastic way to get lots of experience and become a ninja shooter

Hey guys. Wanted to share a recent project I directed for a company here in Nashville called Ramsey Solutions. They teach people how to handle their money and get out of debt. We did a series of videos for their personalities for Christmas campaigns. Below are some BTS shots and screen grabs from the shoot.

We shot on the Arri Amira and used Cooke S4i primes. I graded the project with Color Finale in FCPX. The green screen stuff was poorly shot and we used a C100 so the shots of Rachel are pretty muddy. We had a pretty minor budget but the project turned out pretty cool! LMK what you think and if you have any questions. And yes I was rocking a dirty stache at the time
