Ciao, grazie! I've only been once before, maybe 7 years ago. Thank god it isn't raining, like I saw it was yesterday.

And the bare essentials set-up I picked for later on (don't have any filters or anything with me)...

I just recently bought the FZ300 and it has the 5 axis in 1080p, but not in 4K. And even in 1080p it is a dual IS system that requires the in body and the lens stabilization to work.
With 4K it just uses the ois from the lens. But the worst part is how confusing they describe the IS. So, that is my fear me with this camera.
From the announcement, it sounds like there is in body, 5 axis stabilization, in 4K, but then they discuss the need for OIS lens stabilization for dual IS.
So are they being vague and you need the OIS lens to get the full 5 axis in 4K, or with the OIS lens you are getting like 7 axis?
    Is that a thing?
So, the question is, can I use manual lenses, in 4K, and get 5 axis stabilization?
To be honest, I find it a little suspect that their latest models cannot even do 3 axis, in body stabilization, in 4K without an OIS lens, but this can do in body 5 axis?

Here's a 70D vs 80D comparison.  To me, the 80D looks a bit more detailed; not as detailed as a BMPCC...but then again this is one video.

A reported 1 million pre-orders for Oculus, a reported 3 million pre-orders for Playstation VR.
Once they are in stores and getting rave reviews (which they will)... the landscape will change fast. Obviously dictated by games, for the most part, but 360 video is going places too. I've used prototypes at trade fairs and it is pretty special now they have tightened up the latency.

Alborat reacted to SMGJohn in 4K / 2K MJPEG?
Chant said he might look into increasing resolution and maybe bitrate for the MJPEG, honestly I think the focus should be more on the MJPEG rather than the HEVC which is just painful to work with already and any higher bitrate will make it even more painful to work with than it already is, so instead of having a thorn in our bums, MJPEG would be the better pick here for easy editing.

Alborat reacted to EOS_Lurker in Petition for Samsung NX1 hack
Oh my god, the news on this thread is so exciting - I can't express it in ASCII/UNICODE.  How awesome, you guys made my week!  'm a lurker who finally signed up here, just to post a reply:
So, I'm a 'prosumer' camera user who purchased my NX500 around christmas (the 'big gift from family') based on the specs & price.  My idea was to shoot unattended from an unattended tripod, then crop (& potentially stabilize handheld footage) from 4K to FHD in post.  Sadly, once I started using the camera I was pretty disappointed.  The 15-minute/4GB limit (still an issue @ 4K if I understand correctly?), and for me especially the lack of manual video white balance control in the NX500 made my results horrible, even worse than my cheap old Panasonic TM-90 (which I know well and still love).
This 'forced auto' white balance on the NX500 is killing me!  It's tolerable outdoors but absolutely horrible indoors, resulting in unusable orange-on-yellow garbage that's pretty much uncorrectable since the auto-white-balancer is constantly shifting the white balance around...  (It seems like such a deal-killer, could I be missing something here?)
Having spent the evening reading this thread (I should have taken notes!), I was wondering if anyone has tried running the NX1's .BIN apps on the NX500 camera yet?  'IF' the NX1 video capture app could be made to run on the NX500 that would give us it's manual white balance control (among other things) and to me that would be HUGE.
I didn't return the NX500 because it's supposedly a quasi-open-source device and I was hoping something exactly like this would break open.  (Plus the fact that raising kids I can't justify spending more... anyway...)  Then when Samsung discontinued the product and left us in the lurch, just looking at it sitting on my shelf was kind of depressing.  It looked like a device with great potential, intentionally hamstrung for marketing purposes that was going to be a dead-end and a big wasted investment.  I was left monitoring developments by searching for 'NX500 firmware' every few weeks...
And now these developments...  I am super excited and want to contribute however I can.  Actually I'm a career software developer with over 30 years of experience.  Haven't done much low level hacking lately but know (some) Linux / (a lot of) C++ down to binary optimization (mostly windows) / etc and could probably do some heavy lifting, time-permitting...  Not much image processing background, but I think I understand at least the basics.
So, from my N00B perspective, and not wanting to brick my (now increasingly valuable!) NX500, I'd like to help (in descending order priority) 1) figure out how to get the camera to boot from the SD card, 2) get the camera to run NX1 firmware (more on this in a moment), and 3) remove the 15-minute 4K video recording time.
On the NX1 firm(ish)ware on the NX500 proposed project, the core question seems to be whether the camera is running the same FPGA or if Samsung fabbed different ASIC's for the different cameras.  Information seems conflicting on this, with FCC screenshots indicating they're different chips but FFMPEG reporting the same compression engine metadata.  So which is it?  It seems there's a good argument for both approaches (transistors are cheap vs. FPGA implementation battery run-time might be bad) If anyone can clarify this it seems this would determine whether this NX1 firmware on NX500 project is viable...  OR am I missing something here?  Admit I've had a few beers tonight...
On the 15-minute 4K time limit, it seems like the idea posted earlier of pre-allocating the MP4 files on the SD card is a viable pathway, since probably closing / flushing / opening a new file while straming is problematic and why the limit exists.  (Samsung - you could have just supported NTFS, duh!)  Or we could somehow just hook the '15-minute-limit-reached' event and re-initiate recording, it wouldn't kill me to lose a few frames (hundreds of frames is more likely :-p).  Or at least if the camera could beep a few times to let me know it's stopped recording, that would be a big improvement.  Or we could implement NTFS as a supported filesystem, that would be awesome!)
One last thing, SAMSUNG - IF YOU ARE READING THIS:  Look, you kinda screwed your customers by discontinuing your product line.  Sure there are business realities, but I think your sales could have been 50X if you had just completely open-sourced the firmware...  Seriously, this hardware has awesome specs and enthusiasts could have made this the cult camera of all time if you had just forked over the crown jewels...  (Probably IP licensing issues aside)  You could still do that and help compensate your shafted customers.  Or at least get your devs to push one more release out, removing all these silly caps.  If you're exiting the market, you're not cannibalizing higher-end or newer products!
All this being said, I want to end by thanking the guys who have contributed to unlocking the potential this camera holds.  Set up a paypal, I'll contribute as well as code!  I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops and to contributing as I can.
...  Interesting, it looks like the price of this discontinued camera is going UP!  If this pans out, folks might want to stock up on Samy cameras before they're gone...  ;-)

This is more along the lines of what I am working on. The bitrate mod that they did should be good for most. But I am diving deep into the fw, Still a good time away until my end shows any gains. But like I said a few posts ago the more I find the more excited I get. I can look at the mjpeg encoder cpp and see if things can me modded to allow a higher frame size. But again thats just adding to the list of things. But at least things have moved up! Maybe samsung will have an official word the more news of these mods get better known

I want to thank all the guys who are working hard for our project to make great cameras Samsung NX1, and younger sister NX500.
Samsung one year ago, has introduced them in the market as spaceships and then abandoned them in our hands.
Internal Technology Samsung nx1 and NX500 (28mp BSI sensor, Drime V and Drime Vs engine processor, HEVC codec) is superior than all cameras which are still planned.
it is my belief to think that the processing power allows recording 4k in 4.2.2. without difficulty or 4k Raw internal recording and beyond.

You do realize we all want one now, right? But not all of us have one... yet. The build-up is killing me. I got to get to the bottom of this and see it with my own eyes. Probably be picking one up in Stockholm end of the month, heard they have the best prices at the moment.

    Hey Andrew,
I appreciate the response, and I'm glad you like the content Chris and I put out. We look forward your feedback on anything we produce, and I've gained a lot of useful information and insight from this blog and the message boards.

However, I feel that essentially calling out the entire review community for being in Sony's pockets is excessive. If you were in North America and wanted to test a production A6300 before launch, the only way to do it was to fly to Miami for the press event. I wish that it was an option to have the camera shipped to us in Calgary for testing at that time, as I have other productions and a family to focus on outside of my TCSTV work. But the A6300 is such an important camera that we agreed to spend a few very busy, not at all relaxing days testing the camera out. You have to remember that this is a time when a huge number of enthusiasts pre-order their camera before launch, so these pre-release videos can serve a very useful purpose.
Most of the other journalists and reviewers I spoke with felt similarly. I'm sure a few odd ones didn't use the time to properly test the camera and wrote puff pieces about the camera and G-Master lenses, but many of us spent 16-20 hour days trying to make sure we had accurate impressions. I'd hate to see all of these people lumped together as shills for Sony.
It's a huge compliment that you see us as an honest, respectable source, and we appreciate you embedding our video on the blog post. Chris appreciates your beard-envy.  We hope you keep watching!

People are saying the 1080p 120fps looks soft.
Doesn't look to bad to me...

Also colour in the Vivid profile is very "Fuji-like"
S-LOG may give you dynamic range, but if you want the most effortless out of camera colour just set it to Vivid.
In 120fps with centre-spot AF and enough light to feed the phase-detect pixels it rocks... locks on superbly to what is in the centre of the frame, no hunting.
Dim the light and contrast detect AF kicks in and it's still a bit poo.
Rolling shutter is the biggest issue I have had so far with the 4K 24p.
It's the most I've ever had. Locked down shots no issue but this definitely isn't a tool for violent handheld camera work.
However in the 1080p modes especially 120fps the rolling shutter issues almost disappear...
    And 30fps is a BIT better...but crops.

I think you're being too harsh really.
Running a 6K sensor fast enough to reduce rolling shutter takes a large heat sink and an FS5 or even FS7 size body.
I don't expect them to do that in a tiny tiny mirrorless camera for $1k, why do you?
You've gotta understand what it is trying to do here... read out 2160 lines of 6K in 34ms with no fan and pretty much nothing in the way of heat sink apart from the poorly heat conducting composite shell of the body itself.
By all means take a Canon that line skips through 1080 lines of 2K, pixel binning as it goes... in exchange for a bit less rolling shutter (20ms-ish instead of 30ms-ish)
Doesn't seem like much of a deal to me.
Plus rolling shutter you can fix in post. Moire you cannot.
No touch screen and questionable button placement, fair enough... it should have been better in these areas.
I am going out to buy mine now in Berlin and will report back later.
If the X-T2 gets 4K then it also gets less or virtually no moire by default, as 4K is almost always a full pixel readout aside from when the megapixel count is ridiculously high like in full frame mode on the A7R II (42MP).
